The Day You Disappeared
Gabriel’s POV
You were the first to wake up that day. You always were, always tried not to wake me up, and usually were unsuccessful. I’ve always been mindful of you, even before we were married. You have a power over me that no one but the Father does. You appear so delicate at times I used to worry I’d break you if I wasn’t careful. You move with such grace I sometimes feel like an awkward klutz in comparison. But you always look at me with love, so I know I’m doing something right. That morning was bright and sunny, with that gentle caressing kind of breeze you love. You were tangled in the blankets as usual, with my arm cradling your head beneath the pillow and your hand tucked in mine. You were facing away from me, but I knew you were awake the second I opened my eyes. I pulled you close to me and laid a kiss on your neck, you giggled and smiled, “Hey baby,” you sighed as you reached around to run your fingers through my hair. “Morning, love,” I answered and blew a raspberry on your neck, making you shriek with laughter and throw your pillow at me. I knew we would probably wake our neighbors, but I love hearing your laugh so much I didn’t care. Being hit with your pillow was worth it to see your smile. We parted shortly after that, you heading to gather your charges for the day, and I off to train with the army. You lingered to kiss me farewell, rising to the tips of your toes, and reminded me to be careful. “I love you,” you smiled up at me, your vivid eyes shining. I smiled down at you and wrapped my arms around you. “And I you,” I said, and let go. Your fingertips traced their way down my arm to my hand, and slid out of my grasp far too soon. Had I known this was to be our last interaction, I would not have let you walk away. For although I’m used to being alone, when you’re near I forget how to be just Gabriel. I only know how to be Gabriel and Adara; I cannot fathom going through a single day without you. You’re as much a part of me as the Almighty, without you I’m just an empty shell with wings and an barren, broken heart. I believed that this day would be just like the many others we’d shared, that you would come find me at the training field as always and we would walk home hand in hand beneath the orange and red sun. But you never came, and that night was what I consider the worst in my existence. I cannot tell you how many hours I searched for you, or how many times I called your name. But I can tell you, my love, that I will not rest until I find you again.
