White and Black

Author’s Note: This is a Matrix fanfiction where I own nothing, but will use the characters to my ideas. Please note that if you do not like the idea of lesbian relationships, leave this fic immediately. Run as if an Agent is behind you and wants to kick in your windpipe. That is all.

Oh, also note that I’m going from the original script and not the movie. So there might be some oddness…like the Temple of Zion scene that never made it into the movie. *big evil grin* Have fun reading and please review!

Chapter 1: Beginnings

Light filters down the throat of the building through a caged skylight at the top of the open elevator shaft. Four figures glide up the dark stairs that wind around the antique elevator. Neo notices a black cat, a yellow-green-eyed shadow that slinks past them and pads quickly down the stairs. A moment later, Neo sees another black cat that looks and moves identically to the first one.

“Whoa. Déjà vu,” Neo says as those words stop the others dead in their tracks.

Trinity turns around, her face tight and asks, “What did you just say?”

“Nothing. Just had a little déjà vu,” Neo answers

“What happened? What did you see?” Trinity continues to ask, as Switch’s eyes glance nervously around.

Switch’s hand moved to her gun that was hidden in her belt, muscles tensing as she began to feel something. She couldn’t pin point what it was exactly, but it was there. It was a sweet and sticky smell that blood sometimes has. ‘It is going to happen now,’ she thought as her eyes glanced nervously back to Trinity.

“A black cat went past us and then I saw another that looked just like it,” Neo answered again, a bit more strained at Trinity’s questions now.

“How much like it? Was it the same cat?”

“It might have been. I'm not sure,” Neo replies one last time to Trinity’s questions. Trinity looks at Morpheus, who listens quietly to the rasping breath of the old building.

“What is it?” Neo asked, finally getting in a question of his own in this new world to him.

“A deja vu is usually a glitch in the Matrix. It happens when they change something,” Trinity answered as she also listens as the staccato beat of helicopter blades growing ominously louder.

“Trinity,” Switch whispered softly to her, “we needed to get out of here fast before everything goes to hell in a hand basket.”

“Nothing will go wrong Switch,” Trinity whispered back to Switch and showed some love in her eyes for the woman in white. “Everything will be fine and we will all get back.”

Morpheus looks up the stairs as a helicopter shadow passes over the clouded glass. “Come on!” He yelled as he led the team up the stairs to what was to be their exit. Morpheus stops as the scream is drowned by the report of machine guns filling the building with a terrible fury.

“Oh, God,” Trinity said as a dread started to fill into her heart. Maybe her words to Switch weren’t true, but they were all she had to believe in now.

Flying downstairs, Morpheus stops, hearing the police swarming below. He turns and rushes down the hall of the eighth floor. At the end of it, he finds the bricked-up windows.

“That's what they changed. We're trapped. There's no way out,” Cypher whined as the sound of heavy boot steps close around them with the mechanical sureness of a vice.

“Give me your phone,” Morpheus ordered to Trinity.

“They'll be able to track it,” Trinity said as she handed over her phone to Morpheus.

“We have no choice,” Morpheus said as he dialed the nu in in order to get his team out of the hell they were in.

Morpheus was guided by Tank to where they could go inside the wall and climb down the plumping. It was a way out as well to keep everyone safe. At least that is what Switch thought as they went down inch by inch, carefully not making any sounds. But that was not to happen as Cypher sneezed and the Agents found out where they were. Morpheus had to sacrifice himself for this “One” that she wasn’t even sure about. But Switch would listen to Morpheus until she was dead and then would follow in spirit. A manhole cover cracks open. Two eyes peek out just as a truck rattles over it. The thunder dooplers away and the cover opens.

Neo, Trinity, Switch and Apoc climb out. Trinity pulls a water-logged phone from her pocket. “We need a phone,” Trinity says and Switch walks over to someone, stealing their phone and then knocking the person out. Trinity would smile at Switch’s antics of trying to be macho, but she can’t right now. The machines have Morpheus and they need to get him back. From outside a pawn shop, Trinity calls up the operator. “We need an exit,” she says into the phone.

“Gotcha,” Tanks says, “You're not far from Cypher.”

“Cypher, I thought –“

“So did we. That boy's got nine lives. I sent him to Franklin and Erie.”

“Got it,” she says and hangs up the phone, looking to the other three. She was in charge now, at least for the moment. All she wanted was to be in Switch’s arms but that couldn’t happen right now. It would happen later when they were back on the ship and could save some time for comfort. “We need to go to Franklin and Erie. The exit is there.” The others nod and they start to run to the exit, getting there faster than they thought they could.

The phone begins to ring as the others crawl in. “God, I love that sound,” Switch says with a small smile. They were about to get out of this place with all their lives. Well, minus Morpheus, but he was still alive. It was just something that all could feel.

“You first, Neo,” Trinity says as Switch rolls her eyes from behind Trinity. No one saw her antics.

Neo answers the phone when there is a CLICK. There is no signal. Nothing but silence.

“What happened?” Trinity asks as Neo hands her the phone.

“I don't know. It just went dead,” Neo replies as Trinity listens to the dead line and takes out the cellular.

Trinity can almost feel him watching them. Every unanswered RING wrings her gut a little tighter, until --

“Hello, Trinity,” Cypher says on the other end of the phone.

“Cypher? Where's Tank?” She asked as she hid all of the emotions that she was feeling.

“He had an accident,” Cypher replied with something else in his voice. Trinity couldn’t place what it was, but something was off.

“An accident? What about Dozer? Is Dozer there?” She asked in vain as her mind wrapped around what was wrong. The real reason there was something off about his voice. “You killed them.”

“What?!” Apoc asked.

“Oh God,” Switch said as her heart sank even deeper. They were stuck in the Matrix and under the whim of a madman.

“In a way you're very lucky,” Cypher continued. “Most people never know why they die. One minute they're alive, the next they're dead. No warning. Nothing. That's why I thought maybe I should tell you. It seemed the least I could do. You see, the truth, the real truth is that the war is over. It's been over for a long time. And guess what? We lost! Did you hear that? We lost the war!” Cypher said in his madness.

“What about Zion?” Trinity asked.

“Zion? Zion is a part of this delusion. More of this madness. That's why this has to be done. It has to end. Now and forever.

And now Trinity suddenly sees the entire dark plan. “Oh my God. This is about Zion. You gave them Morpheus for the access codes to Zion.” Switch’s eyes widen as she hears this and she wants to go over and just drag Trinity into her embrace. Just to tell her that everything will be alright and they will be saved. Yet she can’t do what she really wants to do before she dies. She knows it is coming and she can’t have the one thing she wants. One last kiss before she dies. One last kiss from Trinity’s sweet lips.

But her wish would come too late as Switch hears herself say, “Not like this. Not like this.” And then there was darkness as Switch’s plug was taken out.
