He smelled of salt and rum.
An alluring mixture, so familiar and on anyone else it would have been so unremarkable, even offensive…but on him it was exotic, exciting, suited his nature to a tee.
The boy knew it was wrong, but secretly he always wondered if the Captain tasted as delicious as he smelled. If, were the blacksmith to bury his face in the crook of the pirate's neck, he would taste that same bittersweet smell that haunted him for years after he had forgotten piracy, years after he had become respectable by proxy.
And whenever he stepped into a tavern after that, he would wait with bated breath, every sensory nerve on edge, just so he micatccatch a last drift of that smell, lingering, teasing the blacksmith and calling to him like a siren.
Will always asked Elizabeth not to wear perfume - but he never explained why.
It would shatter the illusion of salt and rum.
