CHAPTER ONE: Stormy Seas

There was only one ship in the Carribbean were feared more than the HMS Dauntless, but at this particular point in time Ketain heartily wished to see the ragged black sails of the Black Pearl. At least the pirate ship was less heavily armed and if the Midnight Starr fell to someone else's guns the Captain preferred it to be one of her own.

At the current time the Dauntless grew ever closer in the growing darkness of the afternoon. Ketain kept shipship on a steady course, heading for the only safe haven she knew of in the vicinity.

Tortuga

Fells, her lanky first mate, bellowed directions to the crew as Ketain steered the fast moving brigantine through the rising swells.

"Looks to be a bad blow, Cap'n." Fells hollered above the sounds of the crashing waves.

"Aye! I just be hoping its no an early hurricane!" Ketain answered back, her Scottish brogue thickening her speech as she fought the wheel of her ship.

"God help us iffen it is, Cap'n." Fells turned back to the deck and hollered to the crew again, "Reef the tops'ls! Take in the mains'ils."

Ketain watched as her crew jumped to their tasks, the Midnight Starr was now plunging through the waves then dropping heavily into the troughs. The brig's heaving deck was almost upright as the ship climbed the side of a massive swell.

The storm grew in intensity as the minutes past, Fells joined Ketain at the helm to help wrestle the wheel into some semblance of a straight course. The waves tossed the brig around like a cork in a river, the bow first straining for the sky, then burrowing into the crest of the next wave. Lightning fed oed overhead, the light showing a strange and deadly sight as the blue phosphorence of St. Elmo's fire made the spars and rigging light up. Fireballs dropped to the deck only to be swept overboard by the waves now crashing over the bow.

The crew of the Midnight Starr lost all sense of time, their only thoughts were to keep the ship afloat. With a sharp crack the mainmast shattered ten feet above the deck, the motion of the ship threw the mast and all of itggingging over the starboard side of the brig causing the ship to founder. Until three of the hands jumped forward and sliced through the rigging that tied the ship to the sinking mast. The next wave tossed the Midnight Starr into the following trough sideways, the brig was slow to recover from the near foundering caused by the breaking mast. As the waves crashed over the bow the jib-boom cracked and dropped into the sea carrying the jibsail with it.

Finally, after hours, possibly days, the seas subsided to heavy swells and the sun came out for the first time in a long while. The Midnight Starr was adrift with the sea currents, her upper decks a tangled mess of rigging, broken masts, and spars. The brig was down in the water, her bow barely clearing the higher swells.

For all intents and purposes the Midnight Starr was a dead ship.

For three days the Midnight Starr drifted with the currents before another ship spotted her. The HMS Dauntless drifted to a stop close to the Midnight Star, sending a jolly boat over to inspect the drifting brig and search for survivors.

"Commodore Norrington, there's a lady on the ship, the bosun says she's barely alive."

The Commodore glanced at the wreck off the port bow, "Little surprise that she is even alive." He muttered to himself, then called to the seaman, "Bring her across."

As the jolly boat made its way back to the Dauntless the British man'o'war opened fire on the wreck and quickly sent it to the bottom.

Ketain opened her eyes to see someone hovering over her, she moved slightly elicting a groan from her as she moved a broken arm.

"Rest easy, Miss. You're safe now. Those damn pirates left you on board when they deserted the Midnight Star. I'll let the Commodore know that you're awake now. He's been wanting to talk to you." The ship surgeon chattered away as he finished bandaging her broken arm, "The Commodore will be down shortly, Miss." He nodded to her and left the room.

Ketain closed her eyes and tried to NOT think about what the British did to pirates, her being a female not withstanding it was likely she was headed for a quick drop and sudden stop.

"Ma'am." A stiff-looking British Officer stepped inside the room and doffed his tricorn.

"Commodore." Ketain replied calmly as she opened her eyes. Sitting up slowly she leaned against the bulkhead behind her. "How can I help you?"

"If I may, what were you doing onboard the Midnight Star? Were you a hostage?" Norrington was as stiff in his speech as he was in form.

Ketain smiled softly, "I was no hostage. I was there of my own free will."

"Forgive me, miss, the Captain's mistress? I thought that all pirates considered a woman onboard was extremely bad luck. Captain Ketain Starr doesn't strike me as anything less than the typical pirate."

Ketain chuckled softly, "Captain Ketain Starr is definitely a slight bit more than your typical pirate."

Norrington looked at her sharply, "You speak as if you know Starr personally. I'll ask again, were you his mistress?"

"No." Ketain shook her head, "I was not Starr's mistress." Inside she was laughing at Norrington'nfusnfusion, evidently the thought of a female pirate captain hadn't crossed his mind.

"Miss, you will tell me what I want to know." Norrington's eyes tightened as he watched her. "When did you last see, Captain Starr?"

"Just a few days ago, Commodore. That was the last time I looked into a mirror." Ketain smiled wryly as she watched Norrington's face. The pirate captain upped her opinion of the British Commodore as she saw the understanding dawn in his face.

"YouNorrNorrington's voice was incredulous, "You are Ketain Starr?"

"Aye, Commodore." Ketain sked aed a bow even sitting down, "Captain Ketain Starr, lately of the Midnight Starr. Which reminds me, where is my ship?"

"At the bottom of the sea. We sank it after we brought you on board."

Ketain struggled to her feet, "Ye sank me ship?" Her Scottish accent dueling with her pirate slang as her temper rose.

"It was a wreck, Starr. All of the masts were gone, the rigging was trailing in the water. The entire crew was gone, and the ship itself was down by the bow and taking on water. Short of a close port there was no way to salvage the ship. We sank it to prevent a danger to shipping." Norrington frowned at her, "What would you need a ship for at this time, Starr? You are an aknowledged pirate under British capture. When we arrive in Port Royal your stay in the prison will be short, and will end with a sharp drop."

Ketain snorted lightly, "So, I'm to be hung. Typical of the British Navy."

"Madam, consider yourself under arrest. If you attempt to leave this room you will be shot." Commodore Norrington spun on his heel and stalked out of the room.

Ketain stared after him as the door slammed shut, then sank back onto the bunk. "Starr, me gal, you be in a heap of trouble now. Yer crew is dead, yer ship be in Davy Jones' locker, and ye be heading for a short drop and sudden stop. All in all, ye be doomed." The pirate captain leaned back against the bulkhead and closed her eyes.
