Chapter One: Port Royal
Will Turner sat down on a dreadfully uncomfortable chair that was situated behind a writing table. He tenderly laid his tattered book down and picked up his quill. Opening the book, he dipped his quill into the murky ink and turning to a clean sheet, began to fill it. Whad had been rather adamant about writing in his journal. Ever since he was a young boy he had chosen to write down events, places, and people who made an impact on his day; it was an excellent way to let off steam. He hadn’t relented even after joining Jack Sparrow’s crew. Jack thought his writing was a humorous thing to do, but didn’t say much else about it. Will sometimes wondered if Jack even knew how to write.
Will joined Jack right after Elizabeth had left him. She had broken his heart. She claimed to love him even as she was leaving him. He, naturally, wanted to know why she was leaving. She had given him a stuttered answer that he had deciphered as ‘you’re not rich enough to give me the life my daddy gave me.’
He turned back the pages to reread one of the worst days of his life.
*~*Elizabeth has departed from my life indefinitely. Today, at a very public event, she told me she no longer desired me. She said it far too loud; nearly all present heard her announcement and those who did not hear were told by those who did. But the pain I felt was far worse than the embarrassment; I felt my heart shatter. Even now as I write this I cannot stop the tears. I am unable to imagine ever feeling love for another. Immediately after telling me off, Elizabeth’s father had me thrown out of his house. I write this from outside of a Tavern sitting on the street like a beggar. Now, I must go inside and get more drunk than I ever have in my life.*~*
He had to get away, that’s why he searched out Captain Jack Sparrow and joined his crew. Jack had made him his first mate. Will argued with him for a long time over how he did not deserve such a position on the Black Pearl, but Jack won out in the end.
They had now been pirating together for a couple of years and Will still wrote in his journal; which brings us back to the present.
Will had only written a few sentences, truth was, nothing exciting or interesting had happened that day; they hadn’t even seen a whale. So, Will closed his journal and headed back up to the deck of the Black Pearl. It truly was a beautiful ship, after they had fixed it up that is. They’re current course was for port; they needed more supplies and they hadn’t run into any ships lately to steal it from.
Will never imagined he would enjoy life as a pirate as much as he was. Truth was it wasn’t that bad of a life, if you overlook the fact that everyone including pirates (sometimes even your own crew) were always trying to kill you. He had even had his own encounter in which he was nearly hung for being a pirate. They had picked up a fair amount of treasure on their journeys and being a pirate demanded some respect. Women were always lusting after you and men sometimes envied you. It was both dangerous and adventurous. Will loved it.
The ‘pirate-friendly’ port could be seen in the distance. Will peered at it through the telescope. There were quite a few ships docked, but none of them compared to the Black Pearl. Will put the telescope away and looked down at his hand. He traced the scar with a finger. It was his constant reminder. He looked back up, they were drawing quickly closer. Will ran up the stairs to Jack’s side at the helm.
“How long are we staying?” Will leaned near Jack.
“Till we get everythin’ we need.”
Will thought that at times, it seemed Jack talked in his own special code. It also seemed to him that Jack was hiding something.
As they pulled into port, laughter was heard among the crew.
“Look a’ that!” One of them cried out. Will followed the outstretched finger to a small ship. It was small enough that ‘ship’ probably wasn’t the right word for it; dingy did come to mind though. It was just like all of the other pirate ships only very scaled down version of one. There were no windows below deck. Only one thing kept Will from joining in on the laughter; the pirate flag. It was waving proudly in the wind. He noted the name of the boat; The Neptune. “Must be a birthday gift for a little boy; so he can go play pirate. I doubt the thing even sails!” The crew was getting a big kick out of it.
The sun was nearly set as they finished docking. It wasn’t an easy task getting the Black Pearl into a port. Once finished though, Jack tapped Will on the shoulder and motioned for him to follow. Will followed Jack into a local tavern straight towards the bar.
“Hello, Jack” A feminine voice from the bar came. Will made out the woman who had spoke, she hadn’t even turned around to face them, how did she know Jack was there? They went and stood next to the woman.
“Did ye see the rowboat someone calls a ship?” Jack’s voice had a hint of sarcasm to it.
“I hope you had a good laugh Jack because it isn’t funny.” She sounded quite upset.
“Me crew thought it hilarious.”
The mystery woman slammed her drink down, spilling most of it. At last she turned to face them. not noted that she couldn’t be too far into her twenties. She had a few scars on her face but the most prominent one was a large, long since healed gash on her neck. Perhaps if she had been raised properly she could have been somewhat beautiful, but it was doubtful many men gave her a second glance, if even a first. She had chopped her hair very short; to disguise herself as a boy? Will had many questions he wished answers for, but the one that was foremost in his mind was; how does Jack know this wench?
“I can see you haven’t changed a bit.” Her voice was disdainful.
“Ye spoke te me firs’. If I wan’d te start a conversation with ye, I would’e. Ye have yet te learn ye place as a woman. Don’ speak unless spok’n te.”
Will wasn’t entirely sure what he missed, but the woman suddenly punched Jack across the face. Will drew his sword.
“You dare attack Captain Jack Sparrow?”
She drew the sword he didn’t even know she possessed from her side. “Indeed I do.”
“I will show you your proper place wench!” He grabbed her by the wrist and threw her to the ground and put the tip of his sword to her neck. “Shall I add another scar?” No one in the bar seemed to notice what was going on or maybe they didn’t care; they did see things like this all the time.
She could hear the malice in his voice. Will saw a smile sd acd across her face. “You dare threaten me?”
He looked over at the still unconscious Jack. “Yes.” He pushed the tip of his sword into her neck, drawing blood. Will suddenly doubled over in pain, she had kicked him hard right in the… ouch.
“It is you who will learn his proper place.” She walked calmly out of the tavern. Will felt someone pat him on the back, it was Jack, and he was also shaking his head at him. There was blood coming from his mouth.
“What?” Will still felt throbbing pain.
Jack said nothing and simply went back to the bar and ordered a drink. Will, for a moment, considered going after the wretch. He decided not to and returned to Jack’s side. He questioned him about her, but he refused to say anything.
Will headed back to the ship; it was very early, the sun would rise in a couple of hours. Jack had told him he would meet up with him back at the Black Pearl shortly, after taking care of a bit of business.
Wilppenppened to glance over at the sorry excuse for a ship before boarding the Pearl. He recognized the woman; she was aboard the ship talking to an old man. He made his way over to her slowly.
“The ship fits you whore.”
She managed to ignore him and continue on with what she was doing. Will boarded the ship. “I suggest you get off my ship, now.” She drew her sword once more and Will drew his in return.
“Must I teach you another lesson?” His voice was threatening.
“You ma it it from the dock. Get off my ship!” She was obviously no longer calm.
“Are you afraid?”
“Of you? Nonsense. How could I be scared of a pathetic, unsightly, frail, scrawny, filthy, infantile, strayed diminutive puppy that just won’t stop bothering me?” Will was suddenly at a for for words. Never had he ever been insulted that many times in one sentence. “So, get off my ship or I will remove you from it.”
“You? Must I remind you that with no strength at all I had you on the floor?”
“Must I remind you that I had you doubled over in pain?” Will was getting tired of this game she was playing.
“Yes, thank you for reminding me whm gom going to kill you.” Will touched his sword to hers, he saw fear in her eyes, good he thought. He was about to show her how a sword is really used when Jack interrupted him.
“Will, maybe ye should le’ the girl be.”
“Keep out of this Jack.”
Jack boarded the ship.
“Put yer swords away. Nobody is goin’ te be killin’ anybody tenight”
“For once Jack, can you just let me be?” Will never once took his eyes off the young woman.
“Will, if ye kill ‘er on the ship she b’s t’s te, I will ‘ave te kill ye meself. You boarded without permission in neutral territory.”
Will put his sword away. “You won’t be so lucky next time wretch.” He jumped down from the ship and walked away.
“tisn’t it bad luck te ‘ave a woman on board?” Jack asked her.
“Shut up Sparrow.”
That night she dreamt about the past; about the man she called father.
*~*The water was so cold, but she did not cry. She never cried. For that simple fact, she still breathed today.
‘Tis only a baby. Has suffered so much yet it does not cry. Ye have the heart of a pirate little lad.’
They had not known she was a lass, if they had, death surely would have been her fate. It was not till later that her sex was discovered, but by then it was too late; she had invaded the man’s heart.
For many years she paraded as a boy. One day, she told her father she no longer wished to pretend. He was not one to refuse another’s wishes. By then though the crew had grown too fond of her to be afraid of superstitions. So far, their luck had seemed to hold while she had been aboard.*~*
“Who is she?” Will was in Jack’s quarters.
“’Er name’s Joanna, but everyone call’s ‘er Jo.”
“Why? Does she masquerade as a boy?”
Jack laughed. “Even in the face of death she would’n.”
Will seemed to drop the subject and began looking over the maps Jack had set out. “Shall we go to Dead Man’s Cove?”
“Why the sudden interest in the girl?”
“Excuse me? I have no interest in her, merely hatred.”
“Then why all of the questions?”
“I was curious as to who had the balls, or rather lack thereof, to knock out Captain Jack Sparrow.”
It was Jack’s turn to change to subject. “Dead Man’s Cove it tis.” Will smirked.
The next morning, all of the supplies that had been picked up were being loaded onto the Black pearl. Will and Jack were walking by the Neptune when Will looked over and saw about six old men on board loading supplies. There was also a familiar face moving rather heavy looking supplies. It didn’t take much to notice she was having a bit of trouble. Jack didn’t miss where Will’s attention had been drawn.
“Leave it be Will.”
He just couldn’t help himself though.
“Hello… Joanna.”
The six men stopped anokedoked over at him. Joanna turned around.
“What did you just call me?”
“Joanna.” He saw the crew cringe.
“No one ever calls me Joanna-“
“I just did.”
“-and lives.”
“Shall I call you Anna then? Or how about Ann. Joan could be nice. Or, if your not fond of shortening your name that much, Joanne could work.
“If you insist on speaking to me, which I would rather you not, you may call me Jo. If you call me anything else, I will run you through.”
Will nodded and headed for the Black Pearl. “Bye Joanna!” He called over his shoulder just to irritate her.
“We leaving soon Jack?” Will swung into Sparrow’s quarters without knocking.
“No, I think we’ll be ‘ere till late tomorro’.”
“Why?” Will didn’t sound happy about staying. Once again Jack didn’t answer; Will was beginning to find this annoying.
“Jo?” She looked up from the maps she was studying.
“Yes Duncan?”
“Where do you think we should head next?”
“I’m not sure. Perhaps here.” She pointed to a spot not to far from their current position.
“But, there’s nothing there”
“Exactly” She left the old man standing at the table puzzled and went up top. “I’ll be back in awhile” She told another old man washing the top deck of the ship. She jumped down to the dock and headed off down the beach.
Will was bored. Jack said they would be leaving in a few hours but that seemed ages away. He meandered his way over to the Neptune. “Oh, Joanna!” He called in a sing-song voice.
“She isn’t here.” A voice told him from the ship
“Where is she?” The man who had been cleaning stood so Will could see him.
“She left, that way.” He pointed down the beach. “She always goes down there when we dock here.”
Will walked in the direction he was pointed and he walked for a long time until the footprints in the sand veered off into the trees. It was easy to track Joanna since it had recently rained; the ground was still soft and she hadn’t been trying to hide her path, she must have thought no one would follow. Soon he could hear the distant drumming of a waterfall; he assumed that is where she went. He sneaked close very quietly. There was a small pool of water at the base oe wae waterfall. At first he thought he had assumed wrong until Joanna surfaced. The water came up to her shoulder so she was decently covered. The water was clear but the ripples from the waterfall made it so Will couldn’t see anything beneath the surface. Will suddenly realized he was staring. What was wrong with him? He hated this woman! Then, a wicked thought crossed him.
Joanna was enjoying her bath. She always came to her secluded spot; no one ever bothered her here. She imagined no one else knew of this place. It was like her own personal paradise. She heard a twig snap. “Show yourself!” She lowered herself farther into the water. A half-naked Will Turner appeared at the edge of her pool. “What are you doing here? Did you follow me?” She was quite distressed.
“I could ask you the same question.”
“That’s absurd! I always come here.”
“As do I.”
“You lie.” They continued to argue back and forth like this for some time.
“Well,” He finally said. “I’m going to go for a swim, if you don’t like it, you can leave.”
“I will do no such thing. I was here first!”
“Don’t act so childish.” She turned her back to him as he removed his last bit of clothing. She heard a splash and turned back around. Will was a mere foot from her.
“Staying then are we?” She didn’t respond. She went underneath the water and swam towards the falls. She looked at all of the wonderfully colored pebbles that littered the bottom. She froze. You can see everything underneath the water! Without even realizing she had done it, she did a 180 underneath the water and there was Will Turner. Only, he hadn’t dove under the water, he was still just standing there. She surfaced quickly. Will looked over at her and noticed the blush that crept across her face.
“Enjoy the view?” Her blush deepened. It was as he thought; underwater everything was crystal clear.
“I must return to my ship.” She headed for shore but Will moved in to block her path.
“Jack isn’t here to protect you now.”
“I don’t need Jack to protect me.”
“You may change your mind about that once I am finished with you.” She didn’t like the way he was looking at her. He grabbed her arm roughly and gripped it firmly.
“Let me go.”
“No.” She tried shoving him away, but his grip didn’t loosen. He moved in close to her, almost to the point where their bodies touched. Jo leaned in and bit him as hard as she could on the shoulder. He let her go in a cry of pain and held his shoulder. There was blood running down his bare arm and chest. She quickly got out of the pool not caring she was giving Will a good look at the rest of her, grabbed her clothes and put them on as she headed towards the beach. Once dressed she ran back to her ship.
Will stood in pain in the shallow water. He wasn’t really going to do anything to her! To have done so would have been vile; she was not a beautiful woman. He knew now that she was just a scared child with pretend courage. God his shoulder hurt.
Jack had seen Jo running to the Neptune with a distressed look on her face. He boarded the ship and went below deck to find her.
“Jo?” He found her sitting on the ground in the corner. “What’s the matter, love?” He sat next to her.
“Nothing. Nothing is the matter. And don’t call me love.”
“Surely ye are not upset over nothin’.”
“I am not upset.” He knew he would never get past her defenses.
“When are ye leavin’?” He changed the subject.
“As soon as we load the last of our supplies. So, within the hour.”
“Perhaps I will see ye out there.” He smiled.
“I doubt our paths will cross.” She did not smile. He left then in hope not to provoke her wraith. He was headed back to his ship when he saw an angry Will board the Black Pearl gripping his shoulder painfully. He had no doubt that whatever Jo was upset about had to do with Will. He knew it wasn’t his place to pry, so he let it be.
**So, what do you think? Should I continue…..???? I tried my best with the pirate dialogue, if it was horrid, tell me, if you couldn’t understand a word Jack said, tell me that too. I fretted over this first chapter for a long time. How was the pace? Too fast? Should I go into more detail? Please read and review, I won’t be nasty and say ’20 reviews or I won’t update’, it would just be very nice of you to do so :^) **
