Title: Freedom's Slave
Author: Aithilin (nimcuran_aithilin@hotmail.com)
Rating: R
Pairing: Jack/Will
Summary: AU. No curse, no Barbossa (to a degree). Rather than Norrington, the young Will Turner is found by slavers.
Disclaimer: Not mine. This story is ust the product of a deranged teenage mind with too much time on her hands. No profit made, no intention to be made either.
Warnings: slash, AU, slavery, uhm... angst? Possible character death way, way later.
A/N: Eh, nervous about this one. Not like writing Middle-Earth AUs. Did some research, but the majority of it is off the top of me head. So, expect some historical inaccuracies. I don't plan on keeping the setting in Singapore for long, since I have little experience dealing with the geography there. And there will be NO LEMONS OR GRAPHIC SEX, I can't write that stuff without ruining it, and somethings are better left unsaid. Any historical innaccuracies are not intentional, I ~did~ do research on Singapore, but I found very little pre-dating the 1940s.
Anything with ~~~~~~~ before and/or after is either dream or flashback sequence (but I like confusion, so they usually mix).
Story: This is how it's AU; NO CURSE! Doubtful Elizabeth and Norrington will get any more than a mention, if even that. Okay, so this is the AU. Jack gets rid of Barbossa and the mutinous crew before anything can happen, he doesn't go after Cortez's Gold, he keeps the Pearl, and gets the new crew we all know and love ;). Barbossa has another ship, is pissed off at Jack (complicated part I'm not saying yet), and is there to further screw things up. Just say Elizabeth's ship crossed to the Caribbean a year(or even a month) early, thereby missing Will's ship. Barbossa still attacked Will's ship (merchant vessel+pirate), but our favourite lil kid is picked up by slavers. Got it? Me neither. Don't worry, it should eventually make sense.

For one of the few times in his life, Jack Sparrow felt helpless. Being held back by three men from Barbossa's crew, and his old one, Jack could only watch as his closest friend was murdered; Barbossa holding the bloody dagger himself.
Jack could only struggle against the hulking men holding him as Barbossa aimed his pistol and fired; aiming for Jack's heart.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Jack bolted upright in the inn's bed, gasping as the memory started to fade and his heart rate calmed. He looked around, making sure he really wasn't back in Tortuga. Calmed again, Jack pulled on his previously discarded shirt, fingers brushing the scar on his shoulder that had been left by a poorly aimed bullet. He growled at the memories that threatened to return and slammed the door to his room shut as he left.
The sun was just breaking over the eastern horizon, or would be if sight of said horizon wasn't hindered by buildings. Even at the early hour, people were starting their daily routines in the small 'city' of Changi. Jack tread over sandy, rough streets, wandering the port in search of any of his crew.
He couldn't remember why he came to Singapore, choosing to brave the straights to get to the small port. Probably had something to do with a suggestion Gibbs made. He did know, however, that merchant ships would be carrying fresh silks and Indian ink; and both of those were valuable anywhere in Europe.
Crowds were starting to form in one of the more open areas of the town and Jack wandered over, his curiosity suddenly awakening. Absently noting that several well-dressed men were among the crowd, Jack pushed his way through. He saw Crimp and Gibbs over to one side, no doubt that Crimp was testing his pick-pocket skills. He let his eyes roam across the square, his view blocked at some times by taller men.
After a few minutes, Jack concluded that the event was slave trade, no doubt bringing more than enough wealthy Dutchmen that were out looking for one of the famous tiger hunts. Already getting bored, Jack started to turn, ready to push his way through the accumulating crowd to leave.
Sudden yelling was heard, and while not uncommon, this was no auction cry. There was a woman yelling some creative obscenities, and Jack wondered if he should be impressed since even he didn't use that many.
Scanning the general area where the noise was coming from, Jack stopped dead in his tracks. A familiar jawline, stance, even hair caught his eyes. Staring, Jack shook his head.
"Can't be... Too young..." Jack muttered, moving closer for a better look. The young man was in a bamboo cage, easily identifying him as part of the wares. He saw the dark brown eyes of the young man, wondering if he should be relieved or disappointed. This may not have been Bootstrap Bill, but there were far too many similarities to be mere coincidence.
As if for the first time, Jack took note of the angry woman next to the calmer young man. She was currently staring down what must have been a potential buyer, and Jack grinned at the man's slightly scared look. He had heard at least two of the woman's threats and could understand just why the man was nervous.
The trader, and presumably the current master of the two sharing the cage, was starting to get frustrated; not everyday a slave managed to scare a customer. Jack looked the young man over again, their eyes meeting an Jack getting an idea.
Thoughtfully looking over the woman, whom had started to yell at the 'buyer', Jack easily broke apart from the gathered crowd. The woman suddenly turned on him, and the young man's lips turned moved to form a ghost of a smile, reminding Jack once more of Bootstrap.
"And what do you want?!"
Jack looked surprised, "Me? Oh, nothin'. Just curious."
The woman's eyes narrowed when she caught Jack looking over her companion again. "Don't think 'bout it."
"About what, exactly, lass?"
"Even think about touchin' 'im, and you'll have a very painful fate."
Jack glanced at the boy, who seemed completely unsurprised at his companion's behaviour. "If it'd be anythin' like what you told to this..." Jack glanced at the increasingly frustrated buyer; "gentleman, then I'd s'ppose so."
Before the woman could respond, Jack turned his attention to the trader. "How much?"
"The woman? 60 silver."
Jack heard the slightly relieved tone in the trader's voice and chuckled. He also saw the woman's eyes narrow out of the corner of his eye. "And the lad?"
There was an audible growl from the woman now, and the other man shifted, looking like he wanted to protest. The young man tensed slightly.
The trader glanced at the earlier buyer, "The boy's 80 silver."
Jack managed to look like he was deep in thought, seeing Gibbs coming up with a pouch, most likely stolen. Grinning, Jack gave the bolonglong look, just to get the woman riled and draw attention away from Gibbs and himself. Nodding his thanks as the older man passed, slipping the heavy pouch into his hand, Jack grinned.
Just as Jack was taking out the pouch and looking through it, seeing just how much Crimp had managed tofer,fer, the other man spoke up. "I was already making the deal."
The trader nodded, looking at Jack expectantly. Jack knew that it was normal for the other to offer more, but grinned and stepped up to the man.
"Listen, mate. It'd be much safer for me t' take 'em both."
The man frowned and Jack decided to elaborate. "What d' you think would 'appen if that sweet little lass got free?"
There was an amused sound that came from the boy and it just encouraged Jack. "An' face it, mate. Not the most obedient ones here. I think it might be safer for you," Jack glanced at the trader; "and profitable for you, t' just let me have 'em."
The man frowned, "I want the boy."
Sighing, Jack threw the pouch at the trader and drew his sword. "Well, you're not gettin' him. Unless you want me t' let the woman out and give her a sword."
The man blanched and Jack saw the woman's suddenly eager look out of the corner of his eye. He also saw a look he had seen grace Bootstrap's face far too often on the lad, one that meant the bearer was trying to figure out what Jack was up to.
When there was no further reply, Jack cut the rope holding the door of the cage. "Thought so."
**********
"Why did y' do that?" the woman demanded, stepping in front of Jack when they had managed to get through the crowd and to a narrow street. "And who are ye?"
Jack smiled, "I'm Captain Jack Sparrow. An' I did that, lass, 'cause you interested me."
The young man wasn't far behind, and finally broke his silence. "You probably saved us."
Grinning, Jack looked the lad over. "In all 'onesty, lad. You interested me. She just caught my attention. Got a name?"
The woman crossed her arms, "Anamaria."
The boy looked Jack over, studying the pirate's appearance. "Will. Will Turner."
Jack quickly masked his surprise, "Well, young Will; you and your friend here have a choice. You can come wit' me on my ship. Or you can stay here and find your own ways."
The two looked at each other and Jack's mind raced, this was no coincidence. And he had to know more about the boy. "Of course, joinin' my crew gets you both a nice little home on the seas. Great place t' be free."
He mentally praised himself as that seemed to be the final push they needed and both nodded their assent. Swinging an arm around Will's shoulders, and carefully ignorinamaramaria's glare, Jack started to lead them towards the docks, knowing Gibbs would already be there.
"So tell me, lad; what's your story?"
And that, dear readers, is the beginning of this lil AU some of you seemed interested in. Hope you like it so far. Back story will be explained in time.
And this is for Nicole, for being such a great help. And letting me tease her with plot ideas, snippits, and a few evil plans. ;) Huggles and slash dreams!
