Summary: Four years after the movie, Governor Swann has died. Commodore Norrington wants Jack’s hide, and the new governor is due to arrive.

Beta: The great BetaGoddess Pendragginink. She’s fantastic! And way too modest for her own good!

NOTE: I live for reviews. Being quite depressed lately about my health and missing my job, I could really use some reviews…and don't think I’m begging for cudos! I happen to love flames and constructive criticism just as much and sometimes more! Lord knows, without constructive criticism, I'd have never fixed some of the boo boos I've made!

Chapter 1 – Twenty-One Gun Salute...Turner-Style

Elizabeth sobbed into her husband’s shoulder until his uniform sleeve was soaked through. James turned to his lovely wife and hugged her close. “Your father will be missed by all, Elizabeth, though I know by none so keenly as you.”

Commodore Norrington held his wife while what seemed like the entire population of the town solemnly disbursed from the cemetery. Governor Swann was loved by all and everyone felt the governor had been stripped of life prematurely.

Elizabeth and James were the last to leave the hilltop. As they turned to walk down the path to their waiting carriage, the sound of cannon shots rang out from the direction of the bay. The Commodore’s gaze shifted to the black-sailed ship firing her guns at the town. "What the He..." Immediately, James apologized to his wife for his egregious lapse of decorum. “I’m sorry, my dear, but I'm afraid I must send you home alone.” He kissed her forehead and put Elizabeth in the carriage, ordering their driver Henry to take her home, hoping that she would stay there, then started running along the upper path he knew to be a shortcut to the fort.

"We're in for it now, Whelp. I TOLD you this was a bad idea!” Jack spun the ship's wheel.

“But it’s Elizabeth’s father’s funeral. Surely he deserves the salute.”

“Aye, but not by burning the Dauntless' main-gallant! Pirates don’t know how to give a decent salute. They only know how to hit targets! I WOULD say that Marty’s aim has improved, but it hasn't if he was TRYING to hit the WATER.”

"But I told him not to load shot into the cannon."

"An excellent idea, that, since the guns are aimed at the TOWN. He ISN'T using shot. Just, the cotton wadding weighs less than a shot, so it travels farther. I don't suppose you thought to tell him to use three-quarter less powder for the charge, now, did you?"

Will gulped as the glare from Jack's eyes drilled holes in his skull. "Uh, no, I...uh...never thought of that."

The second volley rocked the Pearl and the lone, stray shot of flaming cotton wadding landed on the decking of the much larger Navy vessel and broke apart, spreading across the deck planking and setting it ablaze. Jack turned the wheel hard over. “We’ve got to get out of here, Will, never mind the third volley!”

“But that would be an insult to Governor Swann’s memory!”

“I’d say that nearly destroying the HMS Dauntless is the higher insult, lad.” Jack's eyes got bigger as the flames raging upwards from the Dauntless' main-gallant sail kindled the main-royal, and the skysail, the flag, and the Commodore's pennant flying above it.

"Oh dear." Will pointed to the chunks of burning canvas flying about in the rigging and dropping down to scorch large areas on the main-sails below. Jack closed his eyes.

The third volley fired, Marty’s shot hitting the cliff-side just below the fort. “All RIGHT, whelp. Twenty-one fired. And now, I’m getting us out of here!” He raised his voice to order the crew. “All hands on deck! Let go all sails! I need full speed out of here, NOW!” The fort cannonade retaliated quickly, firing all guns as Jack ordered the sweeps run out.

Seeing the flaming top-sails and the second volley as it hit the Dauntless’ deck, Norrington ran faster, arriving at the fort so completely out of breath, he was barely able to rasp out his orders to fire all guns at the Black Pearl.

As the pirate ship sailed out of cannon range, sweeps out and running before the wind, Norrington ordered the HMS Seahawk to make way, then headed down to the mooring as fast as he could to accompany them; he wanted to be there when they caught Sparrow. The nefarious pirate had been a thorn in his side for four years; taunting and mocking him by staying in or near Jamaican waters, regularly kidnapping his very own wife (only to turn her loose unharmed before the next dawn)! What was worse, Elizabeth insisted that nothing untoward happened during these abductions, infuriating him with her calm assurance that Jack and Will just wanted to hear the news of Port Royal and visit with their good friend.

The Seahawk pursued the Pearl doggedly for over a week, keeping the elusive pirate ship in sight, but barely. But at last, with her sweeps giving her an edge in maneuverability, the Pearl disappeared around the tip of an island. When the Seahawk finally rounded the bend, the large, black-sailed ship was gone.
