The Roads We Didn't Choose
Chapter 1: He Watches
Sarah and her friends celebrated well into the already aging night. Outside the window an owl watched, almost with a jealous look in it's dark eyes. Thoughts ran through it's head, thoughts that normal owls wouldn't have, for they didn't concern mice and sleeping. No, this was no normal owl, this was the other form of the recently defeated Goblin King.
' You have no power over me,' the words that resounded in his head over and over. Had any other six little words ever affected his life in such a drastic way? The Goblin King could not recall, he shook head, ruffling his feathers. Why was this girl so special? Why had she been able to defeat his Labyrinth when no other had? Why was he sitting out here watching her cavort and play with the others, and he cursed to sit and look in the window like an uninvited guest...well actually he was uninvited.
Sarah looked around her and smiled to herself, she had done it, she had beat the Labyrinth and the Goblin King. Her brother was safe in his bed, her father and step-mother were asleep right across the hall. Why then did she feel as though she had left something behind in the castle beyond the goblin city, something important.
" Sarah, are you alright"? asked Hoggle.
"Yes Hoggle, I'm ok, just a little worn out I guess. It's been an eventful day." Sarah replied and smile at the dwarf.
" Well, if you're sure."
" I am, but if you don't mind, I would like to get a little sleep." she said, and feigned a yawn. She loved her friends from the Underground, even the fireys, she just wanted a little time to herself to think things through.
" My Lady," said Didymous, " should you ever again need us, you only need but call." and with that he returned into the mirror.
" Sawah, bye," growled Ludo, " miss, Sawah."
" Oh, I'll miss you too Ludo, but it won't be long, you'll see me again. I promise." Sarah hugged him and sent him through the mirror.
Soon all of her friends were gone except for Hoggle.
" I'll miss you Sarah, it's hard leaving my first friend."
He said and sniffled a bit.
" It's not really leaving Hoggle, I can call on you, and you know it works both ways. Should you need me....."
" I'll call." finished Hoggle, and with a final hug he disappeared into the mirror.
Sarah stared at the mirror for a moment before she turned and looked out of the window. Her eyes landed on a white barn owl sitting on a branch outside of her window. The owl flew away almost as soon as she had seen it. She then went to her bed and sat down, looking around her room, she smiled. Her dreams had come true, she thought, and she laid back and fell asleep.
