River Falls
Book 4

Chapter 1

Aubrey sat next to Kal’esh, at the side of the open room, watching the young men, that Kal called unbloods, as they taught Sam a few things about fighting. As much as she hated the idea of her son getting hurt, Kal made sure she understood that all fighting among the Yautja was purely sparing, unless it was for a mate, or a matter of honor needed to be settled. All she’d asked was that they be careful. Kal made sure the younger males knew he was untrained, and that they were to help him learn the proper techniques of falling, that way he wouldn’t hurt himself when he was thrown in a fight.

The unbloods all nodded, and the most knowledgeable of them took the place as the teacher, using gestures and movements to convey the information the boy needed, sense the translation program wasn’t widely loaded on the ship’s system yet. So far, things were going well, Sam was rolling across the floor, and tumbling around with the best of them. Or so she thought.

Kal on the other hand would give an occasional growl, that she interpreted as ‘oh no, not that way’, and would sometimes even shake his massive head gently, as the boy would fall into fits of laughter trying to understand his teachers. All and all, she found it all going well. Sam was enjoying himself, and was getting more and more comfortable around the strange faced looking men, and she found that sitting next to the huge one, had its advantages. He purred whenever she touched him, even if it was by accident, and she liked it. His body also gave off a large amount of heat, which dressed as she was she found to be an added bonus. At one point, when the door to the massive chamber didn’t seem to close for more than 10 seconds, she thought of crawling into his lap to stay warm, but thought differently of it, and just stayed close. She didn’t know just how this man would react to her being so forward, or even if he would just forget what he promised, and lay her out on the floor in front of everyone, to have his way with her.

Kal leaned over purring gently, and whispered, “Calm yourself, you’ll attract all the males here. You will have me, not to worry.”

Her face turned several shades of pink she was sure, as several of the young men in the room, grunted, the closest thing she could tell to a laugh.

Then the lights of the room changed to a deep red color, and a loud blaring noise echoed through the room, followed by someone’s grunting/growling voice, with words she could not understand. Sam was brought to her, and the young men all rushed out of the room, and Kal ushered them to follow him. “Stay close!” he ordered, guiding them through the halls, barking at the young ones ahead of him.

“What’s going on!?” she asked, almost picking Sam up to keep him from getting trampled, then one of the unbloods did that for her, keeping pace with the huge man in front of them.

“Something has gone wrong with Ver’On’s journey. There’s trouble. We’ve been called to arms. You’ll be safe, just stay close to me, and don’t leave the ship!”

“Where would I go!?”

Ver’On took position on the top of one hill, to one side of the vehicle access lane, while M’Pa took position on the other peak. The two settled to the ground, crouched to relax, but ready to spring to action if needed. Once in a while, M’Pa would gesture to the sky, showing the setting of the sun, Ver’On would nod, but wave him down, signaling that El would call to them if they were needed.

It was a small sound that drew M’Pa’s attention first. Not from El, but from behind him, and over a bit of distance. He signaled to Ver’On, who nodded for him to investigate. It was a bit of a distance after all. The closeness of the cliffs to the lanes caused many echos, but he finally found the source of the noise. It turned out to be a pair of younglings, above adolescent age for Oomans, and their favorite activity, recreational mating. Such things went on with the clan as well, but never in an open space like this, and always with the permission of either an elder, or their parents, if the male was an unblood. Then he noticed a few others. Two young males, and another female, they joined the first two and began to head away. M’Pa followed.

As he watched M’Pa head off over the hills, he turned his attention back to his mate, as she remained still, looking out over the skyline. All he could really think about was getting her back to the ship, to have her safely under Sa’ton and Ter’Oth’s care. He was not going to lose his mate and offspring this time.

The sound of stones falling, drew his attention behind him, a small lizard slipped off the side of the small cliff. It must have succumb to some ailment. The demise of the reptile was of good fortune for him, as he saw a dust cloud rising in the distance, and heading in his direction. Quickly scanning the area to be sure El would be safe, he grunted softly, and headed off over the cliffs. It wasn’t long before he discovered what it was, a large cube transport vehicle was moving up the lane way, but stopped when it reached another smaller, already stopped vehicle. The occupants of the two vehicles got out, and greeted each other. He’d have to watch them, it seemed they were going to be here for a while, as equipment was brought from the larger one, tools he recognized, and the two males set to work on the mechanics of the smaller vehicle. What Ver’On didn’t notice, was another dust cloud rising in an adjacent lane way, just behind him. There was no sound that he could detect, nor was there any other indication from his direction to let him know there was another vehicle moving.

He was glad he took the three weeks off. Sense Ralph and Ro had left, nothing seemed to be the same. Ro sold his land and home, and left with Ralph. Ralph sold his prized car to some kid, who stupidly drove it into Vegas, where he was killed in a car jacking, and the car totaled in a high speed chase with police. He hoped, where ever Ralph was, he wasn’t tracking the news.

He decided on going camping. Rather than the popular grounds around the area, he decided to head up to the canyon, to a little spot with a bench, reserved just for him, to sit and remember. As far as anyone at the police station was concerned, he was camping up near some river, high in the Tahoe mountains. True it was dangerous to go to a place that no one knew about, or than no one knew where he was going, but he wanted to be a lone. He’d left and envelope with his chief, only to be opened in an extreme emergency, or if he didn’t return on schedule. At least that way he’d be safe, sort of. One would say that to go to the cliff was pointless, but for him it wasn’t.

For him it was a quiet place to sit and think, to see in memory the face of a brown haired young woman, strong in fury, but gente in nature. The kind of gentleness he always saw in her bright green eyes. He wanted so much to hold her, to tell her hwo much he loved her, but that would never be. Over the last year he tried to get over her, going out with other women, but as he would try to address them…her name would slip out, and all would be ruined.

As he turned a corner, he saw a cube truck ahead of him; Marly’s Moble Auto Repair, one of the new businesses in the area. He also remembered that one of the adult video producers was making a movie up this way. One of their cars must have broken down. With the truck there it was blocking the road.

‘Oh hell,’ he through, and turned another way. It was shorter to get to the cliff top, but the surface was very rough, not to mention ‘The Dip’.

The Dip was just that, only no high top vehicles could get through. The cliff next to the road rose up only about six to seven feet then reached out over the full span of the road. Once in there, no one could see you. More than once he found some young kids having a party there, not to mention his own private affairs.

He was through the dip and heading up to the cliff. He knew the perfect place to pitch his tent. But as he rounded the corner to the open area, he almost hit his brakes.

She was there! Dressed in an off white dress with flowing sleves, and…

“Holly shit! El!!”

She was pregnant. But that wasn’t all. Bastion was there as well, with a double barrel shot gun, pointed at her abdomen.

“OH NO YOU DON’T!!”

And he hit the gass…

“What’s with the mask?” he asked smugly, swinging the gun up towards her face before lowering it again.

“I can’t breathe without it,” she stated cautiously, trying to muster the strength to throw herself off the cliff. If the ship was there, they’d be monitoring, maybe they’d be able to move in to catch her.

“Ok. You do exactly what I say, I won’t rip it off. Now get up.”

“What do you want?” She couldn’t get up, gun or no gun, her legs wouldn’t move!

“You’re a wanted criminal! What the fuck do you think I want?!”

“You’ve no power outside the town limits.”

“Citizen’s arrest. I get you in jail, and my record is kept. I always get the ones on the run. NOW GET UP!!!”

Carefully she did, and turned to him.

“Well I’ll be. You got yourself knocked up. You little slut.” His sly smile slid across his face. “I’ve never fucked a pregy before.”

“Fuck YOU!!! AAAAHHHH!!!” She doubled over, as pain ripped across the bottom of her belly. Suddenly she looked down at the pool of water that formed at her feet. “Oh god!” She looked at Bastian. She needed to get away. She needed help. “My water broke!” Where was Ver’On and M’Pa?

“I don’t give a shit!”

“Don’t you get it?! I’m in labor!!!”

“FINE! SO DROP THE FUCKING BRAT!!!”

She screamed as the pain turned sharp, across her lower body. The baby was trying to deliver itself. “PLEASE! HELP ME!!!!”

“SHUT THE FUCK UP!! OR I’LL SHOOT THE FUCKING THING OUT!!”

“NNNOOO!!!!”

The sound of screeching tires on dirt was all she could hear. Bastian turned and fired on the vehicle, but was thrown off by the dust. The back bumper slammed into him, sending him several feet away, sprawled on his back.

“EL!! GET IN THE CAR!!!”

Ver’On heard her scream. A touch of his tusk to the inside of his mask linked him to M’Pa. “What have you got?”

Five Oomans were moving up the wide pathway. All are heading away. I heard El just now!”

“As did I. How far away are you?”

Not far. You?”

“Just under a metric.”

I’m closer. I’ll save some pieces for you, if it is an attacker.”

“I’ll alert the ship.” He thought that the only time he’d moved as fast, was the night he’d saved his El from dying after their battle. He only hoped this was nothing they could not kill. “Ver’On, to Tan’ock. Bring the ship. El’s in trouble.”

I’ll have the med bay ready when she arrives.”

“I can’t!!” She couldn’t leave. Ver’On and M’Pa wouldn’t know where to find her. Not only that, her legs were giving out on her, she couldn’t move, even if she wanted to.

The man leapt from the car, rushing to her side. “Come on El. Get in the fucking car!” He opened the back door of the car, and helped her crawl in. A shot bounced off the top of the car, the man pulled out a tire iron and threw it at Bastian, landing it square in his chest. He went down, but knew he would not be down for long. The man slammed the door, and crawled across the front seat to the driver’s side. “Hang on!”

“I CAN’T!! AAAAHHHH!!!”

“Oh hell, you’re really pregnant!”

“NO SHIT SHERLOCK!!!” She tried to relax, wanted to hold the contractions off, to wait for Ver’On to come and help. “Please! Tyler, don’t go too far please! I beg you!”

“What!? I’ve got to get you to the hospital!” he shouted, over the sound of the gravel striking the sides of the car as he sped back over the road. He hoped the truck was no longer blocking the road way.

“You can’t.” Suddenly she had a horrible pain, one so strong she couldn’t breathe through it as she’d been trying to do.

“Did you just have an urge to push?!”

“OH FUCK YEAH!!”

“Oh hell. Hang on. I know a spot.” He swerved the car hard around and sped along the new access about a mile up, there was The Dip. Tyler stopped the car, turned on the dome light, got out, and pulled supplies out of the trunk of his car. This may have been his personal car, but experiences and horror stories of other officers, taught him to stock his car like it was his patrol car, and then some.

Slamming the trunk he climbed in the opposite side of the car form El, sliding over the seat to her feet. “What are you doing!?” she demanded, feeling the horrible pressure again.

“El, you’re having a baby, you need to get help. But we’re too far, and my radio won’t clear the hills. I’m the only one here.”

“NO!!”

“YES, EL! Now come on, I’ve got to shift you around a bit.”

“YOU’VE GOT TO BE SHIT – ”

“Quit your swearing, and have your baby.”

“Babies!” she growled.

“WHAT!!! How many!?”

She couldn’t speak, she only held up three fingers.

“Oh hell.”

El screamed as the pain became worse. It felt like she was being cut.

“El, I have to do this.”

“Have you…before…”

“Yeah. Lucky for you it was twins.” He pulled on a pair of green surgical gloves.

“Oh hell!”

“Look, if you’d rather wait…”

“NNNNNOOOOOO!!!!” She screamed through the pain.

“Ok.” Tyler moved her legs up, and lifted her dress. “Oh god. El, you’re bleeding.”

“It’s normal. Mother…warned me…”

“Not like this. El, I have to…” he held up a pair of scissors. She knew, and nodded. Tyler cut away her undergarments. He grabbed gauze, and tried to wipe the blood from her. “Holly shit…”

“WATCH…YOUR MOUTH!!!!”

“Sorry. El, I think…I think it’s a head.” He took out a cloth and laid it over her knees. “El, listen. At the next contraction, I need you to push, and push hard. You understand?” She nodded. “Grab the back of the seat if you have too. You ready?”

“Yeah, NOW!!!”

“PUSH EL, PUSH!!” She did, screaming through the pain. “GOOD EL, YOU’RE DOING GOOD. JUST A LITTLE MORE!” She did, she pushed as hard as she could, ignoring the searing pain that spread through her lower body. “I’VE GOT IT!! Easy El, you’ll shoot him out the door.”

“It’s a boy?”

“Yeah, I think so.” He cleared the mucus form the infant’s mouth, but he couldn’t quite understand the shape of the baby’s face. “Oh god. El, what the hell is the father?”

“GIVE ME MY SON!”

He slapped the baby’s bottom, but he had trouble taking a breath. “He’s not breathing.”

“GIVE HIM TO ME!!!”

“Ok, ok, here you go.” He watched her as she pulled off her mask, laying it over the baby’s face.

“Come on baby, please, breathe for me.” She coughed as the air in the car began to sting her lungs. If it did this to her, what was it doing to her baby. Suddenly the baby started to huff, and cry, loud wailing growling cries. She smiled. Her baby was alive.

“Ok…I think we’ve got a breather.”

“OH FUCK!!!”

“Ok, maybe not. El, you’ve got to do it again. EL? EL!!!” He took the mask off the baby, placing it over her face briefly. She opened her eyes. He took the mask away, and laid it next to the baby again. “El, you can’t do that again. I know you need the different air, but El, there’s only one mask.”

“Pliers!” she gasped. “Seal the car, get…pliers.” Quickly he reached forward, and pressed the button to send the windows up. Once done, he grabbed a pair of small pliers from the front console. Seeing he had the tool, she took the small canister from the mask. “Break…compressed. Break the…metal.”

He nodded, and did what she said. The cylinder snapped, the grey material inside expanding rapidly through the car. At once El began to breathe easier, and the baby began to cry once more. Tyler began to cough, but he pulled a cloth around his face and forced himself to go on.

“El, you’re really bleeding here.”

“My BABY!!!!!”

“Ok, ok. You need to push El, push hard! Its gona hurt like fucking hell, but you have to do it!” And she did. Screaming through the pain, groaning through the pressures of her body. “GOOD EL, Keep it up!” She screamed even louder, but felt her second child slip free of her body. “I’VE GOT IT!” Again he cleared the mucus, and the baby began to cry right away. “Jesus El, who did you get laid by!”

“MY BABY! PLEASE…”

“Ok, ok. It’s another boy.” He laid the second baby on her breast, she held them both as tight as she dared. “God El, you look really pale.” He tried to staunch her bleeding, feeling the torn edges of her skin, careful not to cinch the two umbilical cords still leading into her body. “El, you’re really hurt here.” Then he felt something. “OH CHRIST!!! IT’S A FUCKING FOOT!!!!”

“NO!!!!”

“Take it easy. Take it easy. I know what to do.”

“What!?”

“The twins remember. The first one was breach. El, you’re really gona hate me. But I have to…”

El’s eyes went wide. He was going to reach inside her. She nodded. There was no other way. The sting of his movements against her wounds was horrible, but she felt him gently push her baby back inside her body.

“Ok, I have to turn the baby El. Hold still.”

“Like I have a choice,” she stated weakly.

Tyler coughed a bit more, as he managed to turn the baby inside her. But something was wrong. “Oh no.”

“What?”

“The cord. The baby’s cord is wrapped around its neck. One, two, oh man, three times.”

“Can you free him?”

“I’ll try.”

Suddenly there was a horrific howl form outside, and two masked faces slid to both sides of the car. Tyler stared in shock. They were going to break the windows! The babies! El! They would die.

“NO DON’T!!!!”
