Ashes of Sunlight

**First story, so please be nice. Reviews = air, no air, story dies. Let me know what you think, what you want to have happen, anything. Please no flames**

Ash woke with a goran, closing her eyes to the piercing shriek that had interrupted her slumber.

"Lily!!!" her mother screamed for the second time, causing Ash to wince and huddle deeper into the covers.

"Lily!!!!" at the third scream, Ash sat up, jerked the covers off, stormed to her bedroom door and jerked it open. "What?!" Ash screamed back, still blinking the sleep from her eyes.

"Now Lily darling, is that the way to talk to your mother? Your father and I are leaving for the Hamptons. We'll be back in a week. If you need anything, Mary, the housekeeper, will still be arriving as usual. See you later, honey." her mother's speech was followed by the sound of the front door closing. Ash ran across the hallway to the rec room and shouted out of the open window, "For the hundreth time, my name is ASH, not Lily!!" her proclamation was met with her mother's waving hand from the half open window of the limo before her parents drove away.

Not even a "hi, bye" from her father. Not that that was unusual; both of her parents thought more about business and socializing than their daughter. Ash often thought that the only reason she had been concieved was to give her parents a "family" platform. Ashleigh (Lily to most, although she hated the nickname)Marie Kennedy, daughter of Jogn R. Kennedy and Sylvia Lauren Roosevelt. Her name fit in with her prestigeous, blue blooded background, but Ash never fit into her family, of the posh private school her parents forced her to attend. Wanting to have fun and get dirty made Ash an outcast to the rest of her classmates, who seemed to be only concerned with gossip, shopping, and looks. In Beverly Hills, what you see is what you get. Scratch the surface of anything or anyone and it's blank, as if they don't know how to full themselves in any deeper.

Yeah, she had money, lots of it, and all the wonderful things that come with it. But she couldn't remember the last time someone hugged her. A real hug, because you like the person, instead of an air hug in the hallway. Or the last time someone asked for her opinion, and was actually interested in what she had to say. About something other than boys, clothes, or appearances.

Turning away from the window with a sigh, Ash walked back to her bedroom and into her in suite bathroom. Starting a bath, she stripped out of her PJs and got into the tub. As steam filled the bathroom and fogged up the mirrors, Ash turned off the water and settled in to soak, hoping the warm water would help her relax.

Half an hour later, Ash woke to someone pounding on the front door. Rising from her now cool bath, she slipped on her pink terry cloth robe and slippers, wrapped a towelaround her red hair, and went downstairs. Opening the door, Ash recognized the police chief, Gavin Langdon, in casual dress and opened the door wider.
