chapter 10
A/N: Thank you all for the fantastic reviews!! I’m so glad that you are enjoying this story!! Of course I just have to throw in an extra bit of drama…with Elizabeth’s maid now knowing about Jack and Elizabeth’s affair…how long will it be before she can’t stand to keep her mouth shut any longer? Please read and review your comments inspire me to update faster!!
Miriam stood in the doorway of the sitting room holding the tray of afternoon tea and biscuits for Elizabeth and a brand new bottle of rum from the cellar for Jack. She scowled as she watched the two of them laughing merrily as they played some sort of card game. Both were seated on the sofa and were nestled quite cozily next to each other. Her green eyes widened when they noticed Jack’s hand resting causally on Elizabeth’s thigh…as if he were her husband instead of Will. Shaking her head she cleared her throat loudly to get their attention. Inwardly she smiled when she saw how the two of the flinched and Elizabeth pushed Jack’s hand away from her thigh quickly. She felt guilty…good she should feel that way considering she was sitting there fawning all over another man while her husband was hard at work at the smithy. Miriam forced a smile as she placed the tray down on the coffee table before the two.
“Will you be needing anything else Miss Elizabeth?”
“Just some privacy thank you Miriam.”
“Certainly ma’am.”
Miriam headed towards the door quickly wanting to get as far away from the adulterous pair as she could. Just before she reached the door Elizabeth called out to her making her turn around.
“Oh and Miriam?”
“Yes ma’am?”
“See to it that no one comes into the sitting room unannounced?”
“Yes ma’am, will that be all?”
“Yes that will be all.”
Nodding she shut the doors to the sitting room behind her shaking her head as she headed into the kitchen to help with the preparation of dinner. So they were going to be at it again no doubt…it was more than likely the reason why Elizabeth had insisted on no one being allowed into the sitting room. It disgusted Miriam the way that the two of them carried on blatantly as if what they were doing wasn’t a sin. Elizabeth acted as if she didn’t have an obligation to her husband and the vows she had taken on their wedding day ever since Jack had shown up. Sighing heavily her mind shifted to Will. Poor thing…he had to know what was going on underneath his nose. It broke her heart to know that he was being treated so poorly by his wife. Miriam had long since harbored quite the crush on Will ever since she had met him all those years ago before he and Elizabeth had gotten married. And now what she felt for him was far more than just a girlish crush…he was never far from her thoughts. Somewhere along the way she had fallen in love with him…but she didn’t dare act on those feelings because she knew of his love for Elizabeth. And it just wasn’t proper for a young lady to pining after another woman’s husband.
Miriam frowned as she began mixing the dough to make bread to go along with the roast that was being prepared for dinner. It frustrated her to no end that she knew what was going on between Elizabeth and Jack and that she had been sworn to secrecy. Keeping secrets for people never had sat well with her and this was no exception. She was so caught up in her thoughts that she didn’t even realize that she was still stirring the dough when it was already mixed and ready to be kneaded and rolled out before being fashioned into a loaf to be baked in the wood burning stove. Estelle, one of the other maids of the household grabbed her hand gently making her flinch.
“Are you alright Miriam?”
“Yes…no not really.”
“I can certainly see that by the way you’re over mixing the bread dough dear. What’s the matter?”
Miriam sighed heavily putting down the large ceramic bowl.
“I can’t tell you…I promised I wouldn’t say anything.”
“Promised who?”
“I can’t tell you that either Estelle.”
“Suit yourself Miriam…I was only trying to help.”
Estelle turned back to peeling the potatoes and after a moment of heavy silence Miriam tapped her on the shoulder.
“Estelle?”
“Yes?”
“What if you knew somebody was doing something they shouldn’t and they made you promise not to tell on them…would you do it?”
“Doing something like what?”
“Like for example…say a married woman was having an affair and you knew about it…would you keep quiet?”
“Miriam…adultery is a sin! If you know someone who is committing adultery you should speak up! Or else you’re condemning your own soul to Hell for keeping such an awful secret!”
“So you think I should speak up then?”
“Absolutely! You have to look out for your immortal soul dear…and keeping something like that a secret can only lead to trouble later on.”
Nodding to herself she turned back around and took the dough out of the ceramic bowl and placed it on the countertop. Grabbing a handful of flour she sprinkled it generously onto the dough and then began kneading it as she mulled over what Estelle had just said. Miriam had known all along that keeping this secret for Elizabeth was wrong but she was afraid to say anything. Besides what would she say to Will? And would he actually believe her or would he think she was the one who was being dishonest? Shaking her head she decided it just wasn’t the right time to say anything at all. She would tell him about it but not right now…it just wasn’t the right moment. But even just knowing that she had made the decision to eventually tell Will about the affair that his wife was having she already felt as if a ton of weight had been lifted off her chest. At least now maybe she would be able to get a decent night’s rest instead of tossing and turning from the guilt of knowing what was going on between Jack and Elizabeth.
A/N: And the plot thickens…sorry it was such a short chapter but it was just to kinda heat things up a bit. Will Miriam tell or won’t she? Now that’s the burning question…please read and review!!
