CLOUD CITY:

For the first time in his life, Lando was thinking of someone besides himself. His good friend frozen in carbonite, the princess dead, and now, turning Chewie over to Vader, had left a very bad taste in his mouth.

He orchestrated the release of Chewie, his guards easily overtaking the few Imperial officers ordered to escort the Wookie to the Executor. His days at the Tibanna gas mine over, Lando realized it was his last act as the Baron Administrator of Bespin.

Moving quickly, the two brothers-in-arms made a rush for the Falcon. They needed to be air bound before the Sith Lord found out.

Tika's coordinates were waiting for them when they boarded.

Holding Luke's hand tightly, Kelly led him down the winding corridors to the Freezing Chamber.

Something was different. She couldn't put her finger on it. Luke seemed to exude more confidence and be more focused; a stealth in his step that wasn't there before. It was as if he'd aged years since the last time she saw him. He must have been training for this, anticipating his encounter with Vader, she mused.

Arriving at their destination they silently entered the darkened room. A steady hissing sound, due to escaping steam and the occasional thudding of the ancient machinery were the only sounds in the massive chamber.

Kelly was sure Vader was there, hidden amongst the shadows, watching,....waiting. She led Luke to a higher platform, where earlier she'd enjoyed the attentions of her Dark Lord.

"I have to leave you now." She said softly, turning to face Luke.

Luke smiled, still holding her hand, a yellow glow in his eyes, said, "I know. Go now. One of us will come for you." He let her hand go and reached for his lightsaber.

Kelly surmised that Luke had said that to infuriate Vader, and she was pretty sure that it had. Hastily she made her way back to the entrance, out of Luke's sight. Halting at the entryway, she did not leave as instructed, but lingered.

A flash of red, the sound of mechanical breathing, followed by slow deliberate steps. The dark figure emerged from the shadows and stood before Luke.

"The force is strong with you young Skywalker, but you are not a Jedi,...yet." Vader said, his voice deep and measured.

"You're right, Father, I'm not a Jedi!" Luke shot back, as he lunged toward his opponent, lightsaber raised above his shoulder. Startled by Luke’s revelation, Vader faltered, but quickly regained his composure and sprang into action.

The two men battled, matching each other step for step, their blades meeting again and again.

Vader deflected Luke’s blade as it grazed his helmet, bringing his own blazing weapon down and forcing Luke to falter, falling to his knees.

Instinctively, Luke rolled away from the Sith’s advancing swing, jumping to his feet in an attack stance, he raised his saber in a ready position.

Vader had disappeared. Luke listened for telltale sounds, but only heard his own labored breaths. His eyes darted back and forth, canvassing the dark, watching for movement. Hearing a sound behind him, he turned as the brilliant red blade clashed with his own forcing him back again and again. Luke lost his footing and fell backward into the deep pit of the freezing chamber.

Luke used the force to spring himself from the dark pit as the freezing gasses sprayed from all sides.

“Impressive. Most Impressive.” Vader observed, letting admiration show in his voice.

Climbing his way out of the chamber room, Luke made his way through darkened corridors. He emerged from a lighted doorway and found himself several stories high above the Cloud City reactor shaft.

Vader was waiting. Searing blades clashed as father and son continued their duel along the metal platform. Vader backed Luke to the edge, swinging his saber relentlessly.

"Join me,.... or die!" Vader growled.

“I won’t be joining you,.....father!” Luke said, his eyes glowing a sickly yellow and an evil grin on his face.

“Together we can overthrow the Emperor and rule the galaxy as father and son! The Emperor has foreseen this!” Vader offered his hand to his son.

“Yes Father, The Emperor has foreseen many things. I have embraced him and devoted myself to the ways of the Sith. He has showed me the power of the Dark Side. I’ve been in training and and now my skills are complete.” Luke paused, letting his revelations sink in, he then tried a new tactic, “The Emperor was wise to let you have Kelly. Oh yes, he knew. He knew your feelings for her would weaken you. And when you are gone, well, I can make her forget. I didn’t come here to rescue those pitiful Rebels, I came here to rid my Master of an albatross, you! I will be the Sith apprentice you could never be.” Luke slowly made his way toward Vader his lighsaber raised, ready to strike.

Numerous emotions washed over the Sith Lord, shock, anger, sadness, fear, love, hate and regret. These feelings, many of them buried for years, now resurfaced. He had made a grave mistake, underestimating the Emperor. His Master beat him at his own game, seducing his son to the Dark Side, turning Luke against him. He needed to make a decision quickly. Swiftly he swung the blazing red blade downward, meeting with the flesh and bone of Luke’s right arm and severing it.

Luke let out an animalistic cry. Falling to his knees, he grasped his wounded arm to his chest. Vader again raised his lightsaber preparing another assault, when he heard the sound of light footsteps against metal. He froze at Kelly’s cry.

“Stop! Don’t kill him! Standing a few meters behind Vader, she steadied herself against the railing.

Vader paused, his arm raised in attack stance. He had no intention of killing his son, but Kelly didn’t know that. He held out some hope that Luke would still join him.

“Don’t do this! Let him live. Please,......let’s leave here, now.” Kelly begged him.

Long ago, someone else had once begged him to take another path. He chose not to go, and he paid dearly for it, alone and in solitude for decades, wallowing in the depths of darkness, pain his only companion. Until a miracle brought him what he needed, just when he needed it. His life had come full circle. Right then he made his choice. Soon, he would kill the Emperor and rid himself of the evil man who made him what he was. His felt a burden had been lifted and a lightness in his heart that wasnt't there before.

Vader pushed the hilt on his lightsaber, extinguishing the red blade.

“Luke!” Kelly screamed.

Vader turned as Luke plunged off the platform into the abyss below.
