Chapter 11: Payback’s A Bitch

The girls looked up quickly, defiance filling their eyes. They knew that if they were afraid, it was by far not the time to show it, they had to be strong and prove to them that making them stay there was the biggest mistake of their lives. The kings had another idea. Right now the girls were going to pay for what they had just done. Let’s just say that royalty isn’t too keen on attempted food poisoning.

“Might I ask what you were thinking?” Jareth demanded, growing redder by the minute.

“We warned you!” Sarah stated, not letting herself be intimidated.

“Whether or not you warned any one of us, you still openly defied your kings and even attempted to poison us. With that comes a punishment that will be particularly cruel.” Gareth threatened.

“Whoa! First of all no one tried to poison anyone. Secondly, there is no way you can punish us because being trapped her is the cruelest thing anyone can do. Anyways, who do you think you are? We don’t listen to Jareth so why would we do what you say?” Keaira snapped, all her anger she felt towards herself for believing her dream flaring up and giving her force to fight.

“We are all kings and brothers so we demand your loyalty and respect. You don’t follow these rules and we can inflict whatever pain and suffering we want upon you be it Jareth, Gareth or I!” Griffith fought back.

“So for your first task, you will be required to wash all the dishes, all our clothes, thoroughly clean the dungeons, followed by the throne room which needs to be spotless. Afterwards, we will see what time it is and decide on how to further occupy you.” Jareth informed viciously, before Kerri could reply to Griffith.

“Well it will be fun watching you make us work.” Kerri defied without the slightest appearance of fear on her face.

“Really?” Jareth fired, intrigued by her supposed strength, walking forward. As soon as they started to approach, the girls instinctively took a step back. “Well it seems I will have to add some further incentive. Before you clean my throne room you will bathe the many goblins. I don’t care if it takes you all night but you will not rest until all these tasks are fulfilled. Do you care for me to add to this because, in my kingdom, it is not difficult for me to find more things for you to do.” With every word of this threat, the men kept advancing on them. Jareth looked like a bully, a good looking bully, followed by his equally handsome goons. By the end, the girls were backed into a corner, feeling like they might’ve pushed Jareth over the edge. That didn’t take long. They thought to themselves. Because of the long list of chores they now had to attend to they thought better of fighting for now until they would have the opportunity to sleep and begin a new day with a new torture.

“I’m glad you girls are learning respect; it’s about time too.” Griffith who had been pretty silent finally spoke.

“Now get to it!” he said in a half yell half speak kind of way and they disappeared in a poof of sparkles. The girls stood in the corner where they were left, staring at blank place, caught in shock. After a few moments, Keaira began to stir.

“I…I think we should get to work.” She started to the sinks in the far corner of the kitchen. After a couple of steps, she turned to her sister and her best friend and said: “This time, no funny business, I don’t want to work like this my whole life.” She continued her determined march, followed closely by her two accomplices.

Arriving at destination, they observed the mountainous pile of dishes.
“Goblins really are messy, they can’t even clean up their own mess!” she half shrieked.

“Well let’s do it.” A discouraged Sarah sighed. After preparing the sinks, Sarah washed, Kerri rinsed and Keaira dried. Although they were reluctant to do the work at first, they grew into the pace and it was like they were back at home, spraying each other, wiping each other with towels, laughing, screaming; the usual behavior expected from them. Soon enough, the mountain became a hill, to a mound, until there were no dishes left for them to do.

Even though they felt like they were alone, they were actually being watched through a crystal by their admirers. They were stunned at their eventual enthusiasm and joy; they were never expecting them to actually enjoy themselves. What also shocked them was the way they acted like children despite being women. As soon as they noted that the girls were done everything Gareth disappeared from the room. Within a matter of seconds, he was in the kitchen behind the happy girls, who didn’t notice his sudden intrusion. After having admired them for a bit, he loudly cleared his throat. The startled girls, turned without a sound to meet the gaze of the intruder.

“I can see you have finally done the first part of the long list of tasks you must accomplish.” Gareth noted.
“Yeah well, we aren’t incompetent you know.” Sarah challenged.

“Well your cooking is something to be desired.” Gareth snapped to Sarah. The girls seemed to be frozen in place. They weren’t afraid of many people but he seemed to be one of them. He had a sinister aura about him and he was quick to anger. Seeing that no one was willing to argue with him this time, Gareth snapped his left fingers and three giant buckets appeared to that side. Inside them were what seemed to be giant cheese graters. With a snap of his right fingers, three piles of clothing appeared to that side of him. They quickly realized that Fae weren’t aware of the concept of a washing machine and that they would have to attack the clothing the old fashioned way. Keaira looked at the abundance of clothes and turned to Gareth.

“Don’t you have like servants who do this kind of work?” she posed.

“Yes we do…you.” He said with a smile and left the room without another word or look. Sarah automatically walked to the pile of clothing that she knew only Jareth wore. Kerri followed to the pile that only had kingly colors of gold. Keaira found herself faced to the satanic pile. They were pleased that only pants and shirts were in the piles, nothing that would completely scar them for life. Although, the tightness and elasticity of the pants were enough for anybody to run away crying. They took a deep breathe, looked at one another and dug into the pile.

In the beginning, they would talk about everything and anything, making sure to curse the clumsiness and incompetence of Goblins. As the pile diminished in size, they became weary and all their energy was placed into warding off the pain found in their fingertips. After a while the pain was so bad that they felt like bursting into tears but they knew they couldn’t, they would never give Jareth and the other royal idiots the satisfaction of breaking them down. Sarah secretly wished that her grandmother had taught her to use one of these properly without destroying her hands.

“I…will…never…take…a….washing machine…for granted…again.” Keaira mentioned between swipes of the last shirt she had to clean. Kerri had just finished her pile and was leaning against the bucket. While Sarah finished the last outfits, Kerri replied:

“Yeah well that’s if we ever get out of here in our lifetime.” This was the first time any of them had mentioned their eternal sentence and it suddenly became a depressing realization that they would never see their families, never go back to school, to work, see their other friends, drive their car, go to Disney Land for the first time, nothing. Their life had begun in a hope of accomplishing great things and going amazing places but now they were forced to end it in this world so far away from their own, as servants to an egotistical ass hole and his family. Sarah was barely listening to what was going on and continued what she was doing until she was done. Only then did her head go through the same thought process as her friends. They had all assumed the same position as Kerri and Keaira were blankly staring before them, reminiscing on their past, analyzing their present and imagining their future with despair.

Their reverie was soon broken when they heard the chiming of a nearby clock. On the thirteen hour clock, it showed that it was now noon. All three stood up, knowing that if they were ever going to relax they had to move on and quickly. Somewhere else in the castle, the kings were interrupted in their business meeting by the call of the clock. They checked the progress of their slaves, noting the fact that they were now standing with a look of being in a rush on their face. The Fae were amused by the uneasiness in the girls and sat there being entertained for a short moment, until a voice was heard from the video they were watching.

“Can we move on…Your Highnesses?” Kerri screamed with the least respectful tone she could muster. A ray of light formed in front of the frantic girls and, as always, a shower of glitter.

“So anxious to work and serve your lords. What an amazing sign of devotion.” Said a sarcastic Griffith. “So be it.” And before anyone could say a thing, all four were gone from the kitchen and soon found themselves in a dark room lit up by candles that were very spaced out and placed high on the walls along the hallway. It took a moment or two for them to adjust to the lighting or, lack of. In a corner were three buckets mops and toothbrushes, three brooms and dustpans, three dusters and a garbage that emptied itself. They glanced around the dungeon with 10 massive “rooms” along a corridor. When they looked back at Griffith who was interiorly laughing at their dismay, their gaze fell to the floor at their feet.
“There is no way in hell that I am cleaning up your stupid glitter.” Kerri snapped.

“Sorry love but my hands are tied.” He answered with an evil grin and left, leaving more glitter where he last stood.
“Oh My Fucking God! They are soooooooo dead the minute I get my hands on them! Look at all this glitter!!!” screamed a furious Kerri. She was spinning round in shock at the mess that was left, her mouth gaping opened.

After a few turns, she felt someone poking her on the shoulder. She turned around to face a smug Sarah :

“What is it?” she screamed still angry at the mess.

“Did you not realize that he called you love?” Sarah said a slight smirk on her face in a manner of teasing and sincere curiosity as to how Kerri had missed that. She just stared blankly at Sarah for a moment then slapped her on the shoulder.

“Okay, he really likes to antagonize me but two can play at this game!” Kerri grinned evilly, renewed by her new hope for revenge and the plan beginning to form in her mind. “Besides what about the way Jareth is with you?” she laughed, purely amused by what she had said. Sarah was insulted, or scared, not too sure which, of what Kerri had just said. As usual, she was about to go on the defensive, a bad habit of hers. As she opened her mouth to retort, Keaira’s voice rang out instead.

“Look let’s just do this so that I can sleep…I’m exhausted.” She complained.

“Oh you’re just jealous that none of them love you!” Kerri teased. They all laughed at the absurdity of the idea that the kings were into mortals like them.

Determined to sleep that night, they finally set to their task with temporary joy in their hearts. The dungeons were a highly unpleasant sight. There was dust and dirt covering everything. Mingled with the filth were broken ropes, spiders and their webs, puddles of dried blood and thousands upon thousands of sparkles.

Exhausted by all their work and disgusted by the sights they had seen and had to clean, they drudged along painfully, Kerri and Sarah screaming every so often at giant spiders. Keaira was the official, self-proclaimed Spider Exterminator. The mess was cleaned in record time, which sadly meant four and a half hours.

At the end of this, no one came to transport them to wherever they had to bathe the goblins, or at least they didn’t notice the Fae’s presence. Out of nowhere, they found themselves in a room with a massive hole in the middle of the stone floor. The room had no doors, only them, the hole of water and bubbles and hundreds of out of control goblins.

“Well…” Sarah began but changed her mind because there were no words to describe the scene playing out before her and the fear of what would happen when they were cleaning these horrible creatures.

“This is ridiculous!” Keaira yelled. “I’m not doing it!”

“Too bad me neither!” Kerri replied.

“Well I’m not doing this on my own!” Sarah screamed back. They went to the wall to the far right, where there was the least amount of action by the goblins and sat down. They were still being watched by their “owners” who puzzled what they were doing and where they were going. When they sat down, Jareth saw that Kerri placed her self in the middle, Sarah was to the left and Keaira to the right. Their heads fell unwillingly onto one another, using each other as pillows. They quickly fell asleep

“You seem to have forgotten everything that you must do before you are allowed to rest.” Jareth stated, waking his subjects from their two minute nap. Sarah got to her feet first to face their opponent.

“Look, Your Highness (said with much exaggeration), there is no way we are bathing a room full of bumbling idiots who will scratch our eyes out.”

“Only if you give them the chance…”he smirked.

“You know what, you want them clean, throw a bucket of water on them magically, I don’t care. We are not doing it.”
“Furthermore,” Keaira added, standing up “what do you care if they are filthy, I mean you threaten them and throw them into the Bog of Eternal Stench so you really don’t care what they look like.”

“That’s why it gives me much pleasure to watch you suffer over something that makes no difference to me.” He said, still grinning. “Still, I will give you some good advice, grab them from under the armpits, dunk them completely under the water, without drowning them, and then remove them. Do that and you will get out of it as well as can be hoped.” He left, laughing hysterically, leaving in his trademark exit.

“Sarah, what did you do for him to hate you so much?” Kerri asked with a whine.

“I simply bested him.” She replied. “I didn’t know that it would come back and haunt me. This is your fault.”
“Whoa this wasn’t my bright idea, it was Keaira’s!” Kerri fought back.

“Hey sorry for trying to better your life Sarah. Now I know that I was delirious and was influenced by too much alcohol because why would you like a pompous ass like him?” Keaira said.

“For future reference, don’t go doing anything for me anymore, unless I know about it beforehand please. I don’t want to end up in a worst situation than the one we find ourselves in at the moment.” Sarah said, forgiving her friend’s misconceptions. Sarah started walking purposefully towards one of the nearby goblins, picked it up the way Jareth had mentioned and dunked the feisty creature into the tub. As soon as she did so, she put it back down on the floor next to her. When she released it, it kicked her into the water. Sarah knew that somewhere Jareth and his brother’s were laughing at her little tumble and grew furious. Keaira and Kerri ran to the side of the bath and helped Sarah out.

Fuelled by the need to beat the goblins and the Goblin King at their own game they began picking goblins up left and right. Sometimes they were bitten, scratch, thrown in the water and even strangled, well the goblins tried to at least. It was all well worth it when their speed permitted them to leave the room in a matter of an hour and a half. The last goblin was dunked right after the clock chimed six o’clock. Before Kerri could resurface the goblin, they disappeared from that room and reappeared before the thrones.

Looking at them were the three Fae men, laughing at the fate of the young girls. With this odd greeting, they looked at each other, confused. They were soaked from head to toe with the occasional lump of bubbles. Mingling to this were small blotches of blood where the goblins had gotten them really good. They had to admit that the way they looked was absolutely ridiculous but weren’t going to laugh to hysterics because that would mean they were showing the kings that the way they were being treated was alright. So their look remained stern and defiant. Because the girls saw their advantage against the guys who were too busy laughing, they decided to make a joke of their own. With a simple glance between them, they knew what they had to do. They marched forward purposefully and took the bubbles that they were covered in and placed it all over their sovereigns. It wasn’t long until the kings faces returned to normal, to the emotionless façade they usually carried. With a quick flick of the wrist, their clothing was now removed of the bubbles, while the girls took their turn, thinking that they would have the last laugh. Of course, Jareth would never let that happen.

“Well here is your final task.” he said, outstretching his arms to the vastness of the throne room.

“Maybe you people will think twice before double-crossing us again.” Threatened Gareth. “Because we can make this worse.”

“Much worse!” Griffith added.

“We don’t have to act this way, we just do and there is nothing you can do to us that will make us change.” Keaira said.
“Yeah maybe if you guys weren’t such pricks, we wouldn’t be such bitches.” Sarah continued.

“Or maybe we would, we won’t know until you guys change, which will be when Hell freezes over!” Kerri finished.

“Look it’s late, just clean this room. There really doesn’t have to be an answer to everything; especially to defy us for the sake of being difficult.” Jareth said, leaning his head on his right hand, tired of the constant and pointless banter that happened every time they met.

“Oh My God…” Kerri started to protest until she was suddenly cut off by Gareth shouting.

“By the Fates, shut your mouth!” All of a sudden, the girls were incapable of speech. “I will remove the spell when you are actually working so go!” Gareth wearily bargained, treating them like they were 4 year-olds. Without further ado, the girls huffed their way to clean the pig sty that was known as the throne room and the goblin party area.

Feathers, clothing, empty and full barrels of ale, fur and pretty much all imaginable and unimaginable kinds of filth covered the floor. They had to break through layers and layers of this stuff before they could eventually mop and scrub the disturbing floors. Only when they were on hands and knees and scrubbing with horribly small brushes, was the anti-talk spell released.

Throughout the whole time they were doing this, the Fae sat on their thrones watching silently as their girls were showing reluctant devotion. Mere moments after the anti-talk spell was released, an unexpected visitor made his appearance, a young man the girls had never seen before but that their sovereigns seemed to know fairly well.
