Rivers Run Deep

Chapter 12

It had happened so fast, he could hardly believe the change in the female. At one moment she was accepting coaching from the males, the next three lay splayed on the floor, and the fourth was locked in fevered combat. Her strikes with the staff were swift and strong, landing at soft points to do the most damage. Her kicks & punches to the second male were strong, as well, her flexibility aided her greatly in avoiding more serious injury, though she was injured in his attack. A bright stream of her crimson blood snaked a pattern down her leg in small rivers at first, but increased as she continued to fight. The second male down, she continued to fight with the third. Weaponless, she would throw her body in flips and rolls, to gain a little distance, only to attack from another angle. It was not a wise thing to attack the female here, this was her element, and she used it to her advantage.

After the third male’s defeat, she turned to the fourth as he quickly advanced. Though her staff was gone, she knew she was in trouble, but she did not let that daunt her. She avoided the attacks of the male, relieving him of one of his swards. He would have done that too, breaking the weapon to make it useless. She then backed and flipped out of reach of the advancing male, and the way she retrieved her weapon greatly impressed him. The force of her injured foot put enough energy into the staff to bring it to her hand, without looking, she blocked the coming death blow. Again when her weapon was taken from her, and also broken, she did not shrink away and hide. Though locking herself to the male was not something he would have done, it did give her time to formulate a quick plan.

She was agile and quick, tricky too for a female. Striking a second low blow to gain her weapon. Though wounded again, she kept her wits and struck, breaking his second sward, and striking him to daze him. With the other half of her staff in hand, she was able to down the male, but not before breaking all the bones in his face he was sure. As she went to the seating area, she also knocked out the two recovering males, and then left.

She left!!!! The battle field was still fresh with prey to kill! Her opponents were still breathing! And she leaves!!! He trilled at the prospect. She was a magnificent fighter. She didn’t even stop to tend her wounds, as he shifted his vision to see outside the building. She climbed on board her two wheeled vehicle and sped away. He looked at the males all on the floor, the smell of the blood and sweat in the air, the scent of her! The perfect prey!

Quickly he left the building, running into the darkened hills to his ship. He could not – WOULD NOT let her get away. She would be the best trophy he’d harvest from this polluted place. A warrior of youth, beauty, grace, strength, speed, agility…he trilled as he thought of her qualities. Her skull would be the best story he’d ever tell!!!!

HE WOULD BRING HER DOWN!!!!

Officer Tyler had made a quick excuse to his superiors about the file missing. He even took a late night shift from one of the newly married officers so he would have a chance to sneak to the town and get it before the dawn. He just had to wait a little longer. The secondary highway was busier than usual tonight. Campers returning, visitors coming to gamble in Vegas, then there were the CSIs he’d escorted to the Drug house, just outside the town limits. He wondered if the rumors were true, of El’s brother being involved in drugs. He just couldn’t see it. Michel and El were so close, and she’d know, he was sure, if he were dealing drugs or not.

He shot up in his seat, as the sound of an approaching motorcycle reached his ears. It sped passed him, clocked on the radar and over 120 miles an hour. He started his car, and switched on the lights. As he sped out into the traffic he reached for the mic of his radio. The tail lights of the bike disappearing on a side road, the common road El often took to the Canyon. “It has to be her,” he said out loud, dropping the mic. He may not have to go to the village after all, and took off up the side road after her.

The canyon wasn’t far. She’d find solace there. Suddenly the bike started to slow. She ran out of gas. She let it glide to a stop, then let it drop to the ground, and she began to run. The light of the bike guiding her as far as it would reach.

Tyler reached the downed bike, it was El’s. Further ahead he saw the image of reflective tape, or something like it. “She must have run out of gas,” he said, and sped the car forward, quickly catching up to her. The first thing he noticed was the blood running down her legs, he sped past her, turned his search light towards her, and jumped out of the car. “JESUS EL! WHAT HAPPENED?” He tried to reach for her, only she pushed him away. “EL! Hold up, you’re bleeding!” She swung at him, knocking the mic from his small radio from his shoulder. “EL! What are you doing!” He grabbed her arms, and pulled her to him.

She didn’t even acknowledge he was there. Her eyes were still, unfocused. Her pupils didn’t even dilate when he turned her to the light. “Oh god.” He reached for his mic, only before he could depress the button, she nailed his groin with her right knee. Still holding her right arm he went down. She kicked him in the diaphragm, knocking the wind from him, and continued to run.

He recovered quickly and ran after her. “El, WAIT!!! EL!! ANSWER ME!!!” His car suddenly exploded behind him. As he turned to see what it was, a gust of wind blew him over. He got up, looking dazed at the charred remains, then turned back to El. The force of the explosion had knocked her off her feet as well, and he reached her struggling form. “Easy El, I’ve got you.” She swung at him again, her gym jacket falling off her shoulders. “El, its ok, you’re safe now.” She balled her fist, and drove it into his temple, and she didn’t stop till he didn’t try to get up. She turned and continued on to the Canyon, throwing off her jacket as she went.

Ralph had been restless. True he was tired, but he wondered if it was such a good idea to leave El in the custody of the four strangers in the gym. Mr. Com had promised his students could help her, but he didn’t say how. He headed down the hall to the kitchen, perhaps a cup of soothing tea would help. Mr. Com stepped out of the spare room, coming face to face with the large man. They both smiled, and nodded. He was worried too. Their worry increased as they heard the rev of the bike’s motor, and the crash of gravel against the glass of the restaurant door.

The pair reached the street in time to see the bike speeding away down the road. “El’s gona have a fit,” Ralph stated.

“Ralph, look.” The two men looked to the ground, a trail of bloody footprints leading from the gym. Without words, Ralph went to the back of his building and pulled around the fastest car to the front, While Mr. Com ran into the gym.

He found his former students all rolling around on the floor, all of them with blood on them. He didn’t bother to ask what happened, seeing El was gone, gave him answer enough. He ran back outside and hoped into the waiting car. “El’s hurt!” and the car sped away before the passenger door closed. “Where would she go?” Mr. Com asked.

“The Canyon,” Ralph answered. “She liked to star down into the canyon. It’s where she went and tossed flowers into the open for her family. I figured it was a symbolic way of the river below carrying away her sorrow.”

“Perhaps. But why return, if sorrow is gone?”

Ralph just looked at him. “I don’t know.” Down the highway, he turned the car up the side road. The first thing they came across was the green and white bike, laying on its side. Mr. Com quickly examined the bike, then got back in the car. “Bike out of gas, but covered in blood. Hurry!”

Just over the rise of the hill, they came upon the remains of a car, the flames still licking to the sky. Just beyond the wreck, a highway patrol officer lay in the dirt. Ralph recognized him. He pulled him over for speeding once, in the very car he was driving. Mr. Com got out, and helped the man to his feet, slinging him into the back seat. “What happened?” the old man asked, as Ralph moved the car along.

“El…” he gasped, as Mr. Com pressed a cloth to the officer’s broken nose. “She’s hurt, she’s lost a lot of blood.”

“Why did she attack you?”

“She’s not herself,” he replied. “Her eyes…oh god, her eyes.” The man flopped over in the seat. They couldn’t get more answers from him. “How much further?”

“Only a few more yards.” As the headlights lowered over the crown of the hill, they landed right on El’s form in the dark. But she wasn’t alone.

Someone…no…something…was standing with her, a weapon in its hand.
