Book 2
Chapter 13
It was a brief reunion at the hotel, when Ver’On arrived to retrieve Ralph and Ro. The pair settled in temporary quarters, the ship took off out over the open ocean, heading for the mainland.
“Can we see El?” Ralph asked, nearly walking out the door to find her regardless of the big alien’s answer.
“When she wakes,” Ver’On replied. “She is resting right now. Besides, I want you two to meet someone.” The door opened, almost on que, and M’Pa came striding in. He grunted a greeting to Ver’On, before fixing the two Ooman males with a…less than friendly, stare. “This is M’Pa. He is El’s second mate, and…my brother.”
M’Pa bowed his head to Ver’On. It was the second time that Ver’On had called him brother, it wasn’t uncommon for male mates of the same female to become close friends, but to M’Pa, to be called brother was something far more important. He had a family now. Not that he didn’t have a family, a mother, brothers, sisters, and a father, it was just…it had been so long sense he’d seen any of them. A low growl slipped up his chest as he thought about his father. He hoped he never saw that male again.
He turned back to the two Oomans. “I am pleased to finally greet the one that El has come to consider a father,” he said, and shook the big man’s shoulder. “She much admires and respects you…RRRaaallfffssss.”
Ver’On chuckled. “Forgive him,” he said. “Your name has no translation. For those speaking it for the first time, it is difficult to pronounce.”
“Of course,” Ralph stated, chuckling himself at the big male’s attempt. He then looked up to M’Pa, his expression losing all humor. “How is El? I understand you’ve been with her all this time. Is she alright? Is she in any pain? Is she comfortable?”
M’Pa put his hand up to the barrage of questions. “Be still, guardian,” he eased. “El is fine. I would not leave her side, if I did not know she was alright. She is not in pain, her condition is more a comfort issue right now. And yes, right now, she is comfortable. If you wish, I can take you to see her right now.”
“She’s awake?” Ver’On and Ralph chimed together.
“Yes. And she seems quite cheerful.”
“She’s not tired?”
“No. In fact, she seems almost energetic. I had to promise her that I would bring these two right away, or she would have gotten up to find them.”
“Well,” Ro stated, slapping Ralph on his back. “Don’t keep the poor girl waiting. Go on.”
“You too, Ro’Com,” M’Pa stated, seeing the elder Ooman returning to a seat.
“Me? Why?”
“You are her mentor, her teacher. She wishes to see you as well.”
“Alright,” he smiled, and followed the two big males out the door.
She seemed so small, lying in that dish of a bed. M’Pa had assured them she was quite comfortable, and that resting in the traditional flat bed was not what she wanted. Ralph looked around the room, seeing much of the furniture covered in dark cloths and pushed into the huge closets, making the room seem almost bare. Ver’On noticed his confused look, and stepped close to him, speaking quietly so they would not disturb El.
“We noticed certain Yautja nesting behavior in her, we believe it to be transmitted through the shared DNA of her and the babies. If she were to see this room as a far more comfortable place, she would be moving all around here, trying to make a better nesting bed. We feel that is not the best for her right now. She is most comfortable where she is, and with her birthing only a few of your weeks away, it is best that she remain in the smaller resting bowl for now.”
Ro nodded, and watched as Ralph was directed to a spot on the floor, a large pillow there to sit on, well used. Ralph sat, and gently took El’s hand in his.
El looked up right away at his touch, noting how it was different from her mates’ hands. Her face erupted into a huge smile, and her eyes began to swell with happy tears. “RALPH!” she half laughed, half cried, and Ralph leaned over and gently hugged her, though she was far more aggressive, by squeezing the heck out of his neck. “God I missed you!”
Ralph laughed, coughing only a little when the mask hose was restricted in her embrace, then sat back down on the pillow. “I missed you too, my little girl. Would you look at you! About to be a mother. I can’t tell you how happy I am for you! I was so worried about what would happen between you and Tusk when he took you away that night. I was sure I’d never see you again.”
“You know better than that,” she laughed, rubbing her hand down her belly. “Quick! Give me your hand.” He did, and she pressed it hard to her upper abdomen. Ralph smiled as he felt a hard bulge slide under his hand. “That’s a foot,” she said proudly. “I think the last baby finally turned.”
“That’s wonderful,” Ralph smiled, kissing the back of her hand. “I’m so happy for you, I can’t stand it!”
M’Pa also pressed his hand to her stomach, and felt the same movement. He purred to her and went to join Ver’On. “I will scan her later, just to be sure,” he clicked quietly. Ver’On nodded.
“El,” Ralph sighed. “There is so much I want to tell you. So much you need to know. But first, Ro would like to say hello.”
“Is he here?” she asked, rather surprised.
“Oh yes,” Ro sighed, as he bowed to the young mother to be. “I would not let Ralph go gallivanting around the galaxy without me, the women would not be safe.”
The three laughed, but El seemed to lose her breath after a moment.
“Are you ok?”
“Yeah, I’m fine. The baby just kicked my lungs a bit, I think. Every once in a while I’m a little short of breath. Ralph, can I ask a really, REALLY big favor?”
“Of course. You can ask me anything.”
“Would you be willing to take over as a cook on the mother ship? The cooks there, for one, don’t know how to keep the spices down for humans, and two, one of the cooks I spoke with, knows that you cooked on earth, and wants to learn some of your recipes. Would you help teach him?”
“Of course. I was hoping I’d be able to get back into the kitchen, I’d be happy to.”
“Thank you. Now, Ro. Aside from keeping the intergalactic female population safe from this Casanova, why did you come? I understand you have a family here. Why leave them?”
“Are you angry that I wish to go with my friend?”
“No. I just…”
“Please understand,” Ver’On intervened, “El is the mate to an Elder of the clan - A Clan Leader. As such she has responsibilities, some that she also must extend to her Ooman brethren. In order for her to approve of your decision, or wish to join us, you must tell her, truthfully, why you wish to come.”
“Of course,” he replied, and turned back to El. “For starters, I was bored on Earth. Many things have happened sense you left, not all of them for the better. I closed my small classes, ad Ralph sold his restaurant, but still we were bored. We’d considered moving to another location. Perhaps one a bit cooler in temperature, maybe snow on occasion. But when we talked, we found we both had the same fear. Should you return for a visit, how would you find us? So we stayed.
“When Tusk came to us on the cliff the other night, and told us that Ralph was going to go with them, I requested to go on this great adventure as well.”
“What about your family?” asked El, settling back further into the pillows.
“I only have one grand daughter, that is all the family that I have. And she has found a wonderful partner, and will be very happy.”
“She understands that she may never see you again.”
“Of course she will. Her wonderful partner, is your friend Tan’ock. He’s taken very good care of her. When Ver’On came for us at the hotel, he told us how Chonie had chosen Tan’ock. She is here, right now, on this very ship, though I’m not quite sure where.”
‘Knowing Tan’ock, probably flat on her back,’ “Don’t worry, she’ll find you.”
“I’m sure. Now, sense Ralph will be cooking again, I suppose I could retake my role as his occasional helper.”
“Once you both undergo treatments,” Ver’On stated.
“What treatments?” El asked, taking each of the male human hands in hers.
“Oh don’t look so worried, my mate. These two must undergo treatments to cure their bodies of any ailments, or abnormal cells. It is to ensure they live a long time.”
“Like me?” she asked.
“Yes and no. where you receive these treatments from the exchange of DNA with the babies, we had to devise a way to make those same treatments available to Ooman males as well. This way our family will always be strong.”
“Ok. One more thing. Ro, I’ll have to talk to Chonie as well, make sure she knows what she’s getting into.” ‘Or rather, what will be getting into her. GOD I’m so jealous right now.’
“Of course.”
“You yourself understand you may never return to Earth?” Ro nodded, though in truth, he’d never really considered that consequence. “Should you die, I will make every effort to return your body to earth for burial, if that’s what you wish.”
“I will think on that,” he said, and patted her brow. “You have grown so much. Do you know that?”
“I know,” she stated with a sigh. “I just hope I can still do a back flip after this.”
“That is not what I meant.”
“I know. I just…don’t want to think of that right now…my family is all together, that’s what’s important.” As she looked at Ralph her expression became more concerned, seeing him breathing with considered effort. “Ralph? What’s wrong?”
the large man shifted on the pillow. “Oh, nothing. I’m fine. Just…happy, that’s all.” He took her hand in his, lacing their fingers. “I’m so happy you’re ok. I can’t tell you how may times Ro and I sat on the bench at the canyon, wondering about your out there. I’d hoped that ‘Tusk’ would take care of you…but I have to admit…I never expected this.” He gently patted her belly, but pulled away when M’Pa growled at him. Ver’On put his arm to the warrior’s shoulder, whispering. “Is everything alright?” Ralph asked at last.
“He’s fine,” Ver’On stated, patting M’Pa’s shoulder. “We are a very instinctual race. For an unknown male, to M’Pa, to be so forward with El, at this stage, is a bit…stressful.”
“I understand. I’ll me more mindful of that in the future.”
“Nonsense,” El sighed, fixing M’Pa with an indifferent stare. I know you wish to protect me, my Kadji, but with these two…should I need you, I will scream for you.”
M’Pa bowed his head, though her tone was not harsh, e knew when se chastised him. He was grateful she understood his duty to her, but still, he had to remember, these were her chosen family. With that in mind, he knelt before her, receiving a gentle touch to his lower mandible, right along the scar. “My only wish is to keep you safe,” he sighed.
“You will Kadji, You and Ver’On have the most important task ahead of you. Before this ship leaves this world, I will look out over that canyon, one last time, and say good bye. BUT…” and his eyes locked to her as her tone turned hard. “…you will fail if you do not get some sleep.”
M’Pa bowed. “I understand your warning, my mate. I will sleep.”
“Good.”
“I think,” Ralph sighed, patting El’s hand. “It would be best if we left and let you rest as well.” Ro nodded to agree.
“I agree,” Ver’On eased. “You can help me settle the other females.” He hadn’t meant to say that in front of El, and his expression said just as much.
“What others?” El asked, trying to rise, only to have M’Pa press her shoulders down, to keep her there.
“It is nothing to worry about right now,” he eased, taking Ro’ place as he stepped away. “Rest my mate, our babies will come soon, ad you may not be able to rest as often.”
“Ver’On! WHO!!!?”
Ver’On cringed as the color in her cheeks rose. He could only imagine the kind of stress she was putting on the babies, so to keep her calm, he told her. “Two females,” he sighed. He felt is lower region stir with excitement. She was delightful to him when she was angry. As he looked at her, he caught her knowing wink, but her expression never changed. How did she know? “They were rescued by the young bloods, and requested to come with us. I know you will need to talk to them, but not right now.”
“Where are they?”
“Under the young blood’s guardianship.”
“Get me a light cover, and bring them to here.”
“El…” Ver’On never saw her hand move, and Ralph gasped before turning away. El had reached beneath the codpiece of his armor and had grasped his flesh, and slowly began to squeeze, becoming more and more uncomfortable as the pressure increased. Ver’On grasped her wrist, a warning growl from his chest.
El wasn’t fazed in the least. “Get me a light cover, and bring them here,” she repeated.
Ver’On nodded, hoping she wouldn’t squeeze him any more. It was all he could do to NOT respond in the way his body demanded. “Very well. But M’Pa and I will both be present while you speak with them.”
“Fine. But I they think they can avoid life and consequences where they’re from, by getting a free ride off the island, they’re sadly mistaken.” Gently she stroked his semi hard shaft, before letting him go completely, an ‘I wish we could too’, smile as he rose.
Once El was settled beneath her cover, Ver’On escorted Ro and Ralph to a resting room. There he altered the environmental controls to produce oxygen for the pair rather than the mist filled air his kind preferred. When they were settled, Ver’On retrieved the two females from the young bloods, who’d not been exposed to the Yautja true appearance before Ver’On entered the room. Once their initial shock and fear subsided, the young bloods made sure they understood where they were going and why. Once the two women let the company of their younger rescuers, the reason became clear. They could not understand each other.
Ver’On directed the females into the room, where M’Pa stood behind El, two pillows on the floor opposite his position, and Ver’On took up a guard position behind the females, once they were seated on the pillows.
At first they all just stared at each other, the two women eyeing the overprotective male above the human woman in the bowl, and the strange woman watching their reactions, their expressions, and as much of their body language as she could from their seemingly submissive positions. It was Ver’On who finally spoke, only o the two new women it was more a series of growls and words that they could not understand.
“I know,” the woman replied, to his statement. “He was wondering how long we were going to stare at each other,” she told the women, “My name is El, these two males are mine. Who are you two?”
“I’m Karen, and this is Lacy,” replied the tallest sitting woman. “We asked to come along.”
“I don’t want to go back!” Lacy began to cry. “Please, don’t send us back. The younger guys told us you’d be the one to decide that.”
“Lacy, calm down. She can’t decide anything. She’s as helpless as us.” Ver’On growled from above. Though they did not wear their masks, the could still understand the Ooman's words, thanks to El’s translator transmitting all words to the central communications system already translated.
“Oh, I’m far from helpless,” El replied. “I’m just very well cared for. Now. What did you do before getting captured, Lacy?”
“I was living at home,” she sighed, trying to contain her tears. “I worked at a corner store, only two or three days a week. My mother and father sold me to Heeno to cover off their gambling and drug debts. Please don’t send me back. I’d rather die than get sent back!” Karen held the girl’s shoulders as she nearly fell over, crying. El looked to Ver’On, who she knew was intently listening to the girl. He nodded, indicating that she was telling the truth.
“Well, Lacy,” El eased the girl with her voice, “we don’t have corner stores where we’re going. We’ll have to evaluate your skills once we’re settled on the main ship.”
“You hear that Lacy, we can stay!”
“I didn’t say you could stay Karen,” El corrected her, and received a look of distain from the girl, “only that Lacy has been approved.”
“WHAT!”
“What did you do on the island? Before you were captured that is.”
“I…” she looked at Lacy. She couldn’t lie. Za’Besh had warned her not to, that Ver’On and M’Pa would be able to tell if she lied. She had to tell the truth. She looked back to the woman in the bowl, and wondered just what kind of power she held over these strange aliens. “I wasn’t anything important,” she replied, and remained silent.
“That does not answer my question.” Ver’On had moved down, easing Lacy away from Karen, and sent her to sit by the door.
“What difference does it make!?”
“A lot of difference.”
“Who the hell are you anyway!? You some kind of Queen or something?”
El smiled gently, but then turned cold eyes to the woman. “If you understood them, you’d know. Now, either answer my question, or you’re off the ship, back where you were found.”
“NO!!”
Ver’On growled as Karen tried to lung at El. M’Pa threw himself over El, bracing his body weight against the edges of the small resting bowl, adding his own growl to Ver’On’s.
“JUST TAKE ME WITH YOU!! PLEASE!!!”
“If you are a criminal on the island, which I must assume you are, you will not find freedom or escape with us. You will be returned.”
“NO!!!”
“Karen, for gods sake, tell her!!” cried Lacy.
Karen struggled fruitlessly with the growling Ver’On, till finally she did relax, hanging her head to the floor. One by one, tears slipped off the end of her nose to the floor. Ver’On set her back on the pillow, returning to his position behind her, while M’Pa remained over El.
“I was a hooker,” Karen stated quietly. “I didn’t intend to stay that way. It was only supposed to be a couple of dates…with an escort service, to pay for my college tuition. But one night I got caught by the cops. The one that caught me, told me that he wouldn’t put me in the system, so long as I kept working. At first I refused…they put me through the system, and later I got refused from college. I couldn’t get a decent job with a record. I got kicked out of my apartment, and then those two cops picked me up. They’d been my bosses ever sense. That was two years ago.
“When Heeno was looking for contacts on the force to keep him apprised of raids in the area, and the search efforts for missing women, those two stuck out like sore thumbs to him. They warn him of anything linking him or his company to the missing women, and he makes sure they get a cut of the sale of any girl they send his way. They sold me to Heeno when they heard of the type of woman he was seeking for this new buyer. I was supposed to have been shipped out yesterday, but I guess there was a hitch. I woke up still in my cell, where Za’Besh found me.
“I don’t want to go back. I can’t go anywhere in the country and get a job, I can’t go anywhere with a record. Please, I just want to disappear.”
El looked at Ver’On, who nodded his head. She was telling the truth.
“What were you going to study in college?”
“Pre. Med. Maybe become a nurse. But that’s not going to happen.”
Ver’On grunted to M’Pa, who rose to his feet at last, then spoke to El. She nodded before speaking to Karen. “There may be something we can do for you. Ver’On will take you back to the younger hunters. Stay with them until we reach the mother ship. They’ll be your guardians while you are with us. Learn the ways of the Yautja from them, learn form the females that you will meet through them. And never…” she leaned forward slightly, but made sure the girls couldn’t tell she was pregnant from beneath the cover. “…never disrespect me again.”
Karen didn’t like her tone, not one bit. It sent shivers down Lacy’s spine, and Ver’On growling low over their heads didn’t add any ease to the tension either. Both of the women nodded, then rose, and followed Ver’On’s direction back out the door.
The door finally closed, El slumped back to her pillows. How could such a conversation make her so tired? M’Pa put his hand to her cheek, feeling how flushed she was. Quickly he consulted his data pad, skimming the information. He glanced back to El, quickly checking her temperature again.
“I’m ok,” she sighed, tossing the cover off. “Just too warm under that thing.”
M’Pa purred to her, his cheek pressed to hers easing her own tension. Her breathing was slightly elevated, but other than those two things, she was ok. “Are you in any pain or discomfort?” he asked.
She shook her head no, unable to lie. She was in discomfort. Her whole body ached. She tried to stretch, just a little, only to have her muscles complain in earnest. She nestled down into the soft pillows and covers already around her. Maybe she was just tired.
“Will you sleep with me?” she asked. M’Pa shot her a look. “I mean make a bed for yourself, beside me. Please? I don’t want to be alone.”
M’Pa purred even more. It had been a while that she wanted any close contact with her mates while she slept. In a way he was please she wanted his company again, but also he had reservations. Not wanting to upset her, he nodded, gathered the pillows, and the cover, he stripped out of his armor and cloth, and lay down on the floor next to her. Carefully she reached over the edge of the bowl, and stroked the new flesh of his regenerating dreads, before drifting off to sleep, though not entirely a restful one.
Ver’On watched form the door for a while, and when the even breathing of his mate and their second reached his ears, he turned the lights down, and sealed the door as he left. As much as he wanted to join them, he had to command the ship. There were the unbloods to collect, a rendezvous with Kal-esh to establish, and a trip to the canyon to plot, not to mention the course back to the mother ship. All this had to be done before El was to go into labor.
He purred unconsciously to himself as he thought of his little babies’ birthings. Though El would not feel a thing, he could not wait till Sa’ton would lay the first of their young to her breast, still wet from her womb.
He strode onto the bridge, noting the Ooman females were nearly locked to the hips of the two young bloods, and ordered the ship’s new course. In less than an Ooman hour cycle, they would be at the pickup point of the hunting party.
He turned to the communications system, and switched it on, linking himself to Kal-esh. “Elder Ver’On to Kal-esh. Respond.”
The response was swift, though quiet. “This is Kal-esh. I was about to contact you. I will be ready to leave at about local mid night cycle. But I need your help.”
“Oh?”
“I need to complete the offering ceremony.”
“WHAT!!”
to be continued…
