chapter 13
A/N: Well thank you all for such fantastic reviews!! Glad you are liking where the story is headed. But not all will be peaches and cream…yes Will is attracted to Miriam…but he does still love Elizabeth. So he’s not going to go away quietly. Please let me know what you think of the latest chapter!!
Miriam rubbed her palms across the simple cotton skirt of her blue dress as she sat there next to Will on the sofa. They were sitting quite close and she silently prayed that he couldn’t hear her heart hammering against her ribcage right now. It was beating so loud that all she could hear in her ears was the pounding of it. It was like her own personal drum line was marching inside her head. Will’s hand on her own made her nearly jump out of her skin.
“Oh!”
“I’m sorry Miriam…may I call you Miriam?”
“Y-yes sir…um I mean Will.”
“I didn’t mean to scare you.”
“You didn’t…scare me…you just startled me that’s all.”
Her heart was finally starting to slow down from the erratic beat it had been keeping. Her eyes shifted nervously from her hands to his face and then towards the doors of the sitting room. She hoped that Elizabeth and Jack had decided to cool their little tryst for the time being. She still for the life of her didn’t know what had possessed her to warn them. Will’s voice interrupted her thoughts making her green eyes dart up to his face once again.
“Miriam…you know I think this is the first time we have ever sat down and talked?”
“Yes…yes it is actually.”
“How long have you worked here?”
“Oh nearly three years now.”
“Three years? Wow…where has the time gone?”
“It does seem to fly by doesn’t it?”
“Tell me something Miriam…that’s a very unusual name…where did you get it?”
“Oh…my mother named me after her mother.”
It was hot…she could feel the beads of sweat starting to collect on the back of her neck. Standing up she started feigning tidying up the room. Will’s dark eyes followed her as she moved about the room erratically fluffing pillows and straightening pictures. She was nervous…that much was obvious to him. But from what? Setting his glass down on the coffee table he crept up quietly behind her as she was tidying up the books in the bookcase. Leaning in he whispered his breath hot on the back of her neck.
“I get the feeling there’s something you’re not telling me Miriam?”
Miriam’s heart nearly leapt out of her mouth it had jumped so far up into her throat. Gasping loudly she put her hand over her small perky breasts to feel her heart hammering beneath them. Twisting around she came face to face with Will. He was so close that the tips of their noses were brushing together. Leaning back against the bookcase to get some much needed space she spoke in a squeaky little voice that just screamed that she was afraid of something.
“W-what would I be not telling you?”
“You tell me.”
“N-nothing…I’m not keeping anything from you.”
“No? Then why so nervous?”
“I’m not nervous.”
“Sure you are…you nearly jumped out of your skin just now.”
“Well you sneak up on someone and of course they’re going to get startled.”
“You seem tense Miriam…why don’t you just sit down and have a drink with me?”
“Oh no I couldn’t…that wouldn’t be proper.”
“I insist…come on.”
Will took her by the hand and led hr back to the sofa where she reluctantly sat back down. She watched him pour her a glass of the brandy. Taking the glass she sipped on the brandy nervously as she looked at him over the rim of her glass. He was watching her very closely and it was making her more nervous by the second. Will smiled as he watched Miriam sip at the brandy while she tugged on her apron with her free hand. She was quite the pretty young lady…couldn’t have been more than nineteen or twenty at the most. Her eyes were the brightest shade of green that he had ever seen and her hair was a fiery shade of red and hung in thick curls that had been pinned up neatly atop her head. He imagined her hair must be quite long…maybe to about her shoulders. Her lips were full and a soft pink and he found himself drawn to them. At the moment she was rambling on about something trivial. No doubt to try and hide her nervousness. But he wasn’t really hearing what she was saying. All he could think about was those lips of hers and how soft they looked and how much he would like to feel them pressed against his own. He absentmindedly leaned in closer to Miriam as she rambled on timidly. Outside the sitting room Elizabeth was on her way down the stairs quickly in search of her husband. She had to make sure that Miriam wasn’t spilling what she knew about her and Jack to him. Seeing Kate coming inside from the front garden with a fresh bouquet of roses she stopped her in the foyer.
“Where is Miriam?”
“In the sitting room Miss Elizabeth.”
“And where is my husband?”
“Mr. Turner is also in the sitting room Miss Elizabeth.”
Her face went pale for a split second before a scowl etched itself onto her face. Turning sharply on her heel she walked towards the sitting room. Approaching the heavy double doors to the sitting room she stopped short. Her mind was racing with the many images of what she might find when she walked into the room. What if Miriam was telling Will about her and Jack? How would she ever be able to talk her way out of that mess? Elizabeth swallowed hard as she tried to slow her racing heart. Clenching her fists she could feel the sweat that had started to collect on her palms. Maybe it wasn’t such a good idea to go barging in and provoke the one woman who had the knowledge to potentially destroy her marriage.
A/N: Well I know it was short but I hope you liked it…please don’t hesitate to review!!
