We will find her now.

I own nothing in the Matrix.

I apologize, this has taken so long. I hope you enjoy the update.

One and Two pulled screeching into the Ansonville Circle K, making the chickens in the trailer they pulled up next to squawk in concern.

**We take us to the nicest places.** thought One dryly.

**Shut it. If we had not been so overeager, we would be enjoying our little maid right now. We have still not forgiven us for scaring her off.** Two thought back, more than a little surly. It had taken nearly FOUR hours to get here due to: A. a logging truck. B. a school bus(though that had been slightly amusing. One had frightened the students in the back seat near to death by phasing, then unphasing, phasing then unphasing until the back seat was empty and the bus quickly pulled off the road.) C. the oldest, most rusted combine either had eveen.een.

Incredibly frustrating, and impossible o ano anything but wait it out, each vehicle too big to shoot up, the road too narrow to pass, it was sheer hell. Wherever she was, it was certainly far from here. The twins were hoping that the store might have a security system with a VCR. There were only the cameras hooked into any sort of net accessible system, but there was the slight possibility they had a more antiquated system in the store. For once they were hoping this area was as backward as it appeared.

They stepped out of their SUV and stalked into the store somewhat gratified to see the majority of humans make themselves scarce. Sending out a vibe of violent menace was second nature, especially when they were angry and right now it was safe to say they were furious. So, of course they were meticulously polite. The clerk behind the counter looked at them with doe eyed stupidity, apparently so unimaginative that he was unable to even recognize the obvious threat they represented. One noticed the security cameras and felt a wave of relief flow through him—perhaps they would learn something useful. They needed to find Naomi NOW, the Merovingian would expect them back in a few more days, and had already been a mite too curious about their strange little road trip into the hinterlands. If the Mero somehow found out about the loss of Book…it could be very bad.

Focusing his attention back on the human, he decided the boy was more cow-like that doe eyed. He was chewing his gum at a slow steady repulsive pace. Disgusting mammal. One sneered at the young human, then said, “Do you recognize this woman?” He laid a screen shot of Naomi down on the counter.

“Sure, yeah, she was in here a bit ago. I remember her big…” the boy trailed off as One’s furious stare became slightly more furious, “I mean, yeah, she was in here.”

“Do you remember anything about her? What did she buy? Did she ask any questions?” One snarled the questions with barely contained violence. The rest of the store was empty now, so there was no need to worry about creating a scene.
“Uh…she bought a map of the area. And some snacks, yeah, road food.” The boy paused, obviously trying to think of something to please One. “She looked at them ads ovherehere too, the ones for cabins.”

**Remove the ads for any cabins.** One thought to Two. Two sauntered over and tore down several ads, pleased that they’d finally found what might be a useful lead.

“And these cameras? I assume there is a tape for them?” One hissed quietly, thoroughly enjoying tormenting the human.

“Uh…uh…uh…yeah, but I can’t get to it, it’s locked. The manager, you have to come back when the manager’s here.”

One actually laughed at that. It wasn’t a nice laugh, but it was a laugh. Two merely leaned against the door and smirked.

“Do you really want us to stay? How exactly do you propose to entertain us while we wait?” One pulled out his straight razor and flicked it open.

“Look, hey, I uh, ok, I don’t know how to get in it, but I’ll show you guys where it is, but, hey, I gotta go after that…” The clerk trailed off, watching One flick the razor open, then close it.

“Yes, we will allow you to leave if you assist us quickly.” One purred. They found terrifying humans utterly amusing.

Two watched the door while One followed the human to the grungy little manager’s office. He heard him force the door open and then a “oof.” A frowsy looking woman parked her car and began to walk up to the store. Not good. He watched her intently as she stepped onto the sidewalk and then, spotting him through the window, seemed to change her mind about it. Now she was running, which would be amusing if it weren’t for the fact he saw her lift her cell phone to her ear. Damn it. Phasing quickly through the door he stalked after her until he heard her say, “Marge, did I leave my wallet at your house? Yeah. Well, shit.” Two smirked, hadn’t had anything to do with him at all. He walked back to the store and entered through the door the normal way.

**One, get the keys from that cretin. It would be best if we were not interrupted.**

**Of course. Here.**

Two saw the keys come flying out of the backroom and caught them one-handed. Then he locked the door and followed One into the back. The clerk was lying draped over a pile of boxes in the back. Not dead, merely knocked out. One always kept his word—the clerk would live to leave, but long after they did. One was inside the minuscule office, rewinding the grainy tape and looking for Naomi.

**There, that’s her!** Two thought.

**Yes, yes, we have eyes.**

One slowed the tape and then let it roll. No sound, but she didn’t look to be doing much talking. They noted the advertisements she looked at, the map she bought, and the papers. Yes, she was looking for a cabin. Intended to study Book then, of course, it would be just like her. And unfortunate fhem, hem, this little human just might be smart enough to figure Book out. Unfortunate for her, they knew exactly where she was looking for the cabin, how many could they be advertised? They grabbed the same papers as her and headed out for the EXT feeling smug for the first time in days.

After they read the ad for the fifty-second cabin they began to feel a bit less smug. Then they started getting hits on her credit card for cabins all over the state. One growled and ripped the businsectsection in half . **We are getting aggravated.**

**We will need to employ humans if we intend to check all of these cabins.**

**The police. We can put out an APB on her?**

**The Merovingian and the System will notice.**

**The credit card company. No doubt they will have questions about the strange charges appearing on her card. We will monitor their attempts to contact her, and then when they remove the block on her account, we will trace the location of that call.**

**And if she uses a cell?**

**We can still use the information to extrapolate her general area.**

The briefest smile appeared on Two’s face. **And then we will fetch her.**

**Yes, yes we shall.**

Naomi felt pleased with her little deception. She’d booked cabins all over the state while looking for signs pointing her to either a cabin for rent, a house for rent, hell any dwelling for rent. She finally found one that wasn’t in the ads or the paper and pulled over to the side of the road and got out. The sign said, “Cabins for rent. Lake views.” There was no lake around here so that meant this place rented cabins for some place hopefully far from here. Perfect.

Naomi walked inside and listened while the salesperson described the various cabins and their amenities. Finally she selected a mountain cabin a couple of hundred miles from here. There was only the one, and it was very secluded. The salesman was curious why she would want it during the off season, as well as concerned about the possibility of her becoming snowed in.
“It will start snowing in a month or so and you’ve requested a six month lease. Excuse me miss, but you don’t seem the survivalist sort and that GTO won’t get you to the cabin in this weather, let alone once it really turns nasty. Nothing but a cow track up there. You’ll need at least a truck, and need to put some snow tires on it before long.”

She’d nodded, then asked him politely who to see about it. Then explained she was a writer who needed privacy to finish her novel.

“Well, alright then. You’ll get that. Go see Vern about a vehicle, and then go on down to Abner’s once you get to Greytowe’lle’ll get you all the supplies you’ll need, and fill up the propane tank for you right regular if you pay him in advance. You don’t want to run the risk ‘o running out, you’ll freeze quick little missy.”

Naomi paid him cash, thanked him, then went to see Vern. He took her GTO and gave her a Jeep with a winch on the front of it and a brief lesson on how to how to handle the conditions she’d be driving in. Much more informed, and becoming a bit tired of being warned about the weather, she cranked the engine and headed out for her refuge. With any luck, she’d actually make it there in one piece.
