Chapter 16 - Cartography

Oria felt her eyes slip closed without any thoughts other than this was wrong, this was out of control. She could feel him pressed up against her like a burning heat wave washing over her and the streaks of electricity racing down her spine from the gentlest of touches. A touch she had never felt before, asking not demanding for permission to just touch nothing more, to sate part of a desire.

Shaking her head her eyes opened slowly realising that Jack had stopped several moments ago and was just watching her with a satisfied smirk on his face. She smacked his hands away and stepped out of range of his touch, he had that grin on his face, the one that had no determinable meaning, it was just Jack. Oria tilted her chin and turned on her heel, Bootstrap watched the exchange with a grin.

“Now I know there’s something going on as does the crew.” Jack glanced down at the crew every single one had a knowing grin on their faces; he scowled down at them.

“Get back to work you lazy landlubbers! You too Bootstrap and keep your nose to yourself.” But he couldn’t keep the grin from his voice and the crew merely laughed and slowly went back to their duties. Jack watched as Oria disappeared into the hold in search of something one of the crew was looking for.

:/

The second she was out of sight of the main crew she slammed her palm to her head and cursed. Her fist slammed into the wood furious with herself, so much for a diamond encased will, it had just melted. For those sparse few seconds she had let her guard down and all for what, she didn’t even know, probably one of the tricks the whore had taught him, either way her guard had dropped and that was an unforgivable mistake.

Warmth was wetting her hand, she looked at the knuckles, they were bloody and full of splinters, she rolled her eyes, “Great, just great.” Leaning back against the support she began to pick the splinters out one by one relishing the pain, it was punishment, to remind her that next time she had to stay strong and in control. Otherwise… she didn’t want to think of the consequences, that was the last time, she would not give in again and that little voice spoke up again, louder than last time, it said she would.

Pushing herself away from the support she sought out whatever it was the crew man had asked her to find, great now it was affecting her memory and work ability. Talk about the cat among the pigeons, one thought and the rest scattered.

:/

Jack lowered his spy glass slowly and frowned before shouting for Oria, she appeared at his side in an instant, “Aye.” He offered her the spy glass.

“What do you see?” She lifted it to her eye and gazed through it studying the scene in front of her, a small town on the edge of a small island was smoking, a large galleon baring down on it all of its’ guns blazing. Oria smiled and glanced back at him.

“An opportunity. How good is your diplomacy?” He smiled and gazed back at the other ship noting the flag.

“Not good considering who we’re dealing with, that’s Black Smoke James.” Oria glanced at the flag, “Very nasty piece of work apparently.” She smiled.

“Make it all the better a story; you ransacked Nassau port without a shot. He’s more likely than not to stay on his ship while the guns are firing, we sneak in the back door, there.” She pointed to a quiet alley that ended at the sea and a small port, “Take everything that’s worth taking and they see you not Black Smoke or whatever his name is.” Jack nodded rubbing his chin thoughtfully.

“Sounds like a good plan. Get the long boats ready lads, we’re going looting!” There was a general uproar of approval, Jack turned to Oria, “You’re to stay here and look after me ship. Wouldn’t trust anyone else, slightest sign of trouble and you have my permission to do whatever is necessary.” She nodded and took over the helm as Jack went to oversee the setting of the long boats.

:/

Nearly two hours later the long boats made their final trip back to the Pearl every man smiling, grinning and chortling as they sailed away imagining the curses and mutters of ghosts from the other crew. Oria glanced down at the pile of loot, “Hope you’ve got a treasure trove for that lot.” He took over the helm.

“I have, we’re going to go and get those co-ordinates now.” Oria glanced at him.

“You’re taking a risk, there’s only the slightest chance she’ll have heard of you.” He met her gaze with a grin.

“Worried for me? I wouldn’t be, I’m beginning to enjoy this whole rebellious pirate thing.” She smiled.

“Good, you’re beginning to look the part as well, you’re no longer as pale as a babes’ backside.” Jack laughed.

“Aye, perhaps, if that’s the only quality a pirate has to have then we’re well on our way, now go plot me a course.” Oria crossed her arms.

“How about I give you the co-ordinates and you go and plot the course, I’m not being cooped up in that cabin.” He scowled at her.

“Now that’s no fun. What say we go and do it together, get the job done twice as fast?” Jack grinned winningly at her, she nodded.

“Agreed, I wouldn’t inflict cartography on you either so it is a fair compromise.” Jack motioned for Bootstrap to take the helm; he grinned and watched as they disappeared into the cabin.

:/

Oria shook her head and studied the map over his shoulder intently; the path was more precarious than she remembered, “Look, you take that path and you’re going into French waters.” He nodded.

“But to go around them would take us through Spanish and HMS waters as well as adding four days on to the trip.” Oria sank down onto the chair next to his and rubbed her forehead.

“Then go through the French but I’m telling you if they’re anything like they were when the Tigress was abroad we’re in for a rough ride. What about here, you going to risk Dutch waters as well.” Jack shook his head.

“I know they’ve got patrols out, we’d be inundated with Flutes left, right and centre.” Oria nodded.

“Then we go around, risking the Portuguese.” Jack dropped down the compass and pencil and stretched lazily.

“We’ve been doing this for hours and we’re still no closer.” Oria shook her head and stood up again, she leaned on the desk studying the map intently her finger tracing paths lightly while the others worried her lip in agitation. She placed her hands down flat and mock banged her head on the table.

“This is ridiculous, I’d forgotten how simple it was with the Tigress, anything we met she could blow up. We just bee-lined to wherever we wanted, eventually ships started to run away from us.” Rubbing her temples she backed towards her seat only to feel hands on her waist moving her in the other direction, she stumbled on Jacks’ legs and fell into his lap with a quiet exclamation of surprise. His arms wrapped about her waist holding her slighter frame to him.

“You’d be surprised at how fast we move you know, we could just try bee-lining. See how it goes, how far we get and what the consequences are then make decisions based on that later on.” Oria glanced over her shoulder at him.

“Are you still talking about cartography?” Jack grinned lustily.

“Perhaps, did you have something else on your mind?” His eyes roved over her again, he never got tired of that particular activity, “I’d be willing to accommodate it if there was you know. I’m always open to suggestions.” Oria loosed his arms carefully and shuffled around till she was straddled across his thighs facing him, the arms replaced themselves about her and pulled her closer.

“Really? Are you not afraid?” His hands grasped her hips tightly and pulled her forwards till was sat directly over his hips.

“That’s an hours’ worth of afraid then.” Oria leaned forwards and captured his lips as she slowly rotated her hips over his, he groaned quietly at the fluctuation of pressure and his grip tightened on her hips to bruising proportions. He pulled away gasping for breath with the rushes.

“Don’t start this unless you intend to finish, ‘cos I don’t know if I’ll be able to stop.” She sought out his lips again desperate for the contact.

“Then I’ll warn you now, I’ve not been touched before.” He froze underneath her; she paused and sat back, “Problem?” Slowly he shook his head.

“Just wondering if you’re sure or has the cartography sent you a bit loopy? No problems on my half of the deal.” Inside his heart was singing triumphantly, he had dared to dream of such a thing but had doubted it. He had no idea why there was such elation at this scrap of news but there was and it almost hurt in its’ intensity. A sharp pinch on his arm brought him out of his thoughts.

“Ouch, what was that for.” He scowled at her and rubbed his arm.

“This is real it’s not a dream. Perhaps it would be best if you thought this through.” She stood up slowly.

“What you’ve changed your mind?” Oria shook her head.

“No, my mind is made up, you know what I want, you’d best think it through though.” She slipped into her hammock; Jack spread his arms in disbelief.

“Are you doing this to torture me!?!” Oria bit back her grin and straightened her face before turning to look at him.

“No, you looked practically terrified; I didn’t want you to have a heart attack.” Jack stood up and stalked around his desk.

“This is not the best time to be playing games pet.” He grasped her hand tightly and pressed it to the bulge, “It’s kind of urgent and I don’t need any second thoughts about what I want and what I don’t want.” She pressed herself against him tightly.

“Good, welcome to the selfish world of pirates.” He dragged her closer desperate to sate the ache that was growing deep in his belly.
