Chapter 16 - Drunkards and Challenges
The woman tugged something free of her hand and a skinny seven year old girl appeared next to her avidly avoiding anyone’s gaze and rubbing her toe into the ground. Oria stared dumbly at the girl before practically exploding at the pair.
“You brought her here. What insanity possessed you to bring her here?” Saraya glanced up and stared at Jack in awe. Jack stared back in shock; the girl was tall for her age and skinny as her mother with long black hair. Oria had been right about one thing though; those were definitely his eyes staring back at him. Reality gave him a hard knock on the head, this was no longer some fanciful dream, this was here and now.
“It’s no longer safe for her to stay with us. Ever since your friend dropped her off and with your annual visits it’s been drawing too much attention. Now that the Navy’s after you it is impossible to think that no one will recognise you and the reason for your visiting. You’ll have to find somewhere else to keep her.” The man continued regardless of Oria’s outburst ignoring her as she gestured and tried to interrupt at frequent intervals. The woman pushed the girl towards Oria; she stumbled slightly before holding her arms out for Oria. Oria knelt without thinking and swept her up against her, the girl resting on her hip, her small fingers running through Oria’s hair gently.
“This is ridiculous, how am I supposed… we’re on a ship in the middle of… something. It’s too dangerous for her to come with me, hell it’s not even feasible.” The man shrugged and grasped his wife’s hand tightly; she looked very reluctant to leave the girl.
“She’s your daughter, sort it out yourself. She’s no concern of ours; we only took her out of charity.” Oria watched them leave her jaw hanging open in astonishment; Jack was still staring at the girl who stared straight back so boldly with his eyes. He gave a slight lop-sided grin.
“Hello.” Saraya shook her mother’s shoulder gently.
“Mama, mama, that’s Captain Jack Sparrow and he’s talking to me.” Saraya whispered her eyes still locked onto Jacks’ in awe. Oria shook her head forcibly as she was drawn back to the present situation by the insistent shaking of her shoulder.
“What?” Jack was still staring at the girl, his daughter, if it hadn’t sunk in before it certainly did now. As heavy as that rum bottle had cracked into his skull only a few days ago. Except this was ten times harder. “Oh, Jack, this is Saraya, Saraya, Jack.” Jack stared dumbly; slowly Oria lowered the girl to the floor, the girl clasping her hand as tightly as if it was a lifeline as she stared at Jack with wide eyes. Jack looked at Oria pleadingly.
“Can I tell her please?” Oria shook her head nervously her eyes glancing about the street watching for anyone who may intend harm.
“It’s too dangerous Jack.” He was too far gone in the awe of finding his child to pay her much attention and slowly knelt down in front of the kid.
“Do you know who your father is?” The girl shook her head still staring and her hand tightened on Oria’s.
“Mama won’t tell me, she says she will when I’m older.” Oria grasped the girls’ shoulders and dragged her backwards away from Jack.
“Not now Jack. Later if you must, but not now and not here.” Slowly he met her eyes and nodded before standing up smoothly his eyes flicking between the pair.
“Get back to the ship, Tortuga isn’t the best place for a kid and woman to be wandering around in.” Will and Gibbs stood staring, the likeness of the girl hadn’t been lost on them and both felt just as in awe as Jack. Will pointed between Jack and Oria his mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water.
“Is… what… am I…? Huh?” Gibbs pushed his hand down harshly.
“Keep quiet you fool.” Will glanced about him but there was no one within listening range. Jack placed a hand on his daughters’ head gently and grinned.
“You be careful now, I’ll be seeing you again soon.” The girl nodded her eyes still wide with awe and locked onto Jack as Oria began to lead her away and back in the direction of the ship. Tripping over her own feet as she sought to keep her eyes on Jack.
:/
Oria was forced to pause as the girl stared up at the Interceptor her eyes the same size as dinner plates and her mouth hanging open. She tugged her mother’s hand gently but insistently as was her way.
“That’s… that’s the… mama is that the Black Pearl?” Oria gazed down the pier; there was a group of drunken men stood at the end looking at them curiously. Sweeping the child into her arms Oria headed onto the ship quickly sending the occasional glance back at the group of men.
“No, the Black Pearl is far grander than this. It’s nearly twice the size and has sails of ebony black. This ship is the HMS Interceptor; Captain Jack Sparrow commandeered it from the Navy in another adventure which I’ll tell you about later.” Sara hugged Oria’s neck tightly gazing about the ship curiously. So much had happened since her grandparents had brought her away from their house in Port Royal. Now she was with her mama and she couldn’t be happier, they spent so little time together and she loved her with all her heart. Not only was she with her mama but she was on Captain Jack Sparrows’ ship and she had seen him in person.
“I want to see the Black Pearl. When I’m older can we see it together?” Slowly Oria nodded glancing back nervously.
“You might see it sooner than you think.” A creak on the boarding plank caused her to turn sharply, her eyes met with the group of men, “Get off this ship.” She hissed at them as the lead drew his sword.
“We only want to play pet, seem a bit young to have a kid.” Oria lowered Sara to the deck and pushed her in the direction of the Captains cabin.
“Go in there and don’t come out till I come to get you. Understand?” Sara nodded and ran into the cabin locking the door behind her, even with the little time they had spent together she knew better than to doubt her mother.
Oria drew her swords and watched warily as the rest of the men clambered up the boarding plank and stood on the deck leering. Setting her balance carefully she waited for them to make the first move her eyes studying each up swiftly calculating their individual weaknesses. They were completely intoxicated from the way some of them stumbled.
“Now what is a delicate thing like you doing all alone and with only a child for protection?” Oria scowled at them. Being patronising was not the best way to get sympathy.
“Who said I need protection?” The leader chuckled and stalked forwards he stumbled over his own feet as the drink tipped his mind.
“I didn’t I know that.” He lunged and she parried smoothly stepping around him smartly, both watching the other seeking out weaknesses to exploit. Oria feigned a slight dip in her right defence and he lunged instantly only to skewer himself on her left blade. The rest of the group surged forwards and a shot went off to the left. Oria glanced over to where a man was stood holding a smoking pistol, the Captain’s door swinging open. She turned aiming to intervene in what ever plans he had only to be blocked time and time again as she tried to head towards the cabin. A small shriek went up from inside.
“Sara?” Fear clamped about her heart as the man reappeared dragging the girl in front of him a pistol to her head. Oria smacked one of the men over the head and kicked another in the crotch without faltering.
“Drop your swords.” Oria paused unsure about what to do, unsure as to how far the man was willing to go. He primed the pistol with a sneer and Oria dropped her swords to the deck instantly, shaking her head slightly.
