White and Black Pearls - One Remaining Pearl - Chapter 17
Chapter Seventeen
“Captain!” Ragetti bleated, running through the trees awkwardly, his bony arms flailing. “Captain Barbossa, we found sumfin, come have a look!”
Calypso and Barbossa both lifted their heads, abandoning their own searches and following the man back the way he’d come. When they arrived at the supposed something found, Barbossa rolled his eyes and let out an exasperated sigh.
“I told you to get me out before you left!” Pintel roared, thrashing on the spot. He appeared to be only half a man then – the top half – with the rest of him disappeared into the fallen dried palm leaves and sand. “Oh, Captain Barbossa. We found a way in, we figure,” he said, suddenly filled with respect.
“We was wanderin about minding our own business when I saw a coconut. I wanted to try and crack it open, for the milk you see, but Pintel hurried ahead of me wantin’ it first.”
“I saw it first!” Pintel argued, enraged again. “You saw it second, it was mine fair and square!”
“You did not!” Ragetti squeaked, pointing an accusing finger.
“I don’t care who saw the coconut first,” Barbossa interjected, his roaring voice threatening, “You’ll both be dining on it in hell if you dragged me over here just to hear an argument. Is it the way in or not!”
“I can’t tell,” Pintel admitted submissively, wiggling once to prove a point. His belly was quite nicely plugging the hole he’d fallen into. “I’m stuck. But it feels like there’s holes for feet carved into the side on my left.”
“Get him out!” Barbossa snapped.
The men all moved immediately, grabbing Pintel by the sleeves and arms, all heaving at the same time and managing to pull him out of the hole amidst his protests of pain. When he was removed, and Barbossa peered down into the hole, he nodded. “Aye, it looks like what we’re lookin for,” he breathed.
Calypso came over as well, and looked into the hole. There was momentary hesitation before she touched the pearls at her wrist, as though for comfort. “You go first,” she ordered, pointing into the hole and circumventing any charming offers of ‘ladies first.’
Barbossa looked up at his crew. “Stand guard men,” he ordered. “Keep a keen eye on all you see, especially for approaching ships or signs of an ambush. Weapons at the ready.”
“Aye!” the men called out obediently as Barbossa took the final step and disappeared down into the hole, falling a good few feet. They heard the echoing thump of his boots hitting rock below, and then watched in fascination as Calypso followed suit, though she made no noise when she disappeared inside.
The goddess looked at Barbossa dryly from her position in his arms; he’d caught her in her descent, rather than letting her land on her own, and she didn’t say thank you as he put her down. Rather, she snipped out, “Make yourself more use to me and lead us down into this hellhole. I like standing on land as much as you like standing at the bottom of the sea.”
Barbossa scowled at the thinly veiled threat but drew the compass out anyhow. He began to walk forward through the narrow cavern slowly, using the compass to navigate the twists and turns and choosing the right tunnels, avoiding the ones that lead to who knew where under the island. Perhaps this was how Jack had gotten off the island the first time? When he saw brighter light ahead, he put the compass away once more and slowed down.
Listening, he heard a strange clanking of metal, but not much else. It sounded like a metal-studded rope being tugged back and forth by waves, smacking against a ship’s rungs. But, there were no ships down here, so he was at a loss for what it might be, though the noise didn’t seem to be generated by anybody doing it with intent, it was the natural, emotionless clank of the sea stirring its contents.
Slowly he approached the end of the tunnel, and when he reached it, he looked down. There was an outcropping below, at the end of another set of holes carved into the wall to be used as a ladder. Barbossa climbed down this one, since it was too far to jump, and waited until Calypso was standing on the outcropping with him before looking around. There was a table up here, and a few meager supplies… a bed, a three-legged chair, and not much else. He walked to the edge of the outcropping then and looked down, towards where the noise was coming from.
There was blood splashed all across the rocky wall, and on the bars of the cell door, which was what was making the banging noise. Blood was swaying back and forth in the water alongside the gate, which was open and banging against its hinges with the water’s movement. Whatever had happened here, it had been bloody, and it had been recent. But… Calypso and Barbossa were the only two beings in here; whoever else had shed this blood was gone.
The both of them looked up when they heard a rumbling, churning sound, and watched as a flood of water began to pour in from a hole in the cavern below, flooding the prison cell and even higher still, right up to the very edge of the outcropping at their feet. Silence loomed for a few long minutes as the two stared at the water, and when it rushed back out just as quickly as it had come, the prison cell and cavern were shining and clean, as though the dark oily stains of blood had never been spilled.
“It’s begun,” Barbossa said grimly. He wasn’t even entirely sure what had begun yet, but he was most definitely sure that it had started.
