Chapter 18 - Peace

Oria took up the post of the look-out feeling mildly sorry for Jacks’ plight but it did have a purpose, she would teach him to be the best pirate and that required him to know patience. She could feel his eyes burning into her, the hate he felt for her right that moment was astronomical and it made her smile.

Hate was an emotion she was all too familiar with. Glancing down sideways at him she noticed how he quickly looked away pretending that he hadn’t even noticed her. He was a puzzle, when he wanted to he could meet her ferocity with equal strength though he rarely utilized it and she knew he was smart, after all how many would have had a quick enough wit to do what he did when they first met. That dagger at Davy Jones’ had been genius, perhaps it was time to see just how smart he was. She shuffled about in the small room available in the crows’ nest and settled down to think.

:/

Jack watched her shuffle around and settle into a more comfortable position, that look he had caught; he knew it was not going to bode well. He had to stay one step ahead of her if he was going to get anywhere; he was beginning to understand that. This one was tricky, she would twist things into new shapes and meanings, he’d hunted many women before, he wasn’t unused to the chase or the catching. This chase was far more interesting than any he had been on before; Oria set tests, made him jump invisible hurdles and kept him always a few steps behind.

She had room to manoeuvre and he had none with which to retaliate, trapped in a corner, somehow he had to break out of the cage, prove he was in control. Surprises, that was her main weapon, to interpret prejudice views and go against the norm and leap out at a different angle with claws extended, somehow he had to make her leap without him being there. Get the cat in the open and available to be pounced on, turning the tables.

All he had to do was find a way to get into the hiding place, the smile that crept over his face a few moments later worried most of the crew, there was an evilness there, a deep cunning.

:/

As night began to drift in it brought with it a chill breeze and swirling mist. The crew shifted nervously, Oria watched as the cool grey tendrils curled up onto the deck and caressed anything it could lay its’ icy fingers on. A man began to crawl up the rigging towards her; he grinned as he stepped over the banister and took the spy glass from her. Her mind already made up on her plans she didn’t notice the crew mans’ lazy perusal of her as she climbed over the banister.

“Don’t want to stay up here for a bit of fun?” Oria glared at the man, he shrugged, “Your loss.” She snorted.

“Aye, perhaps but I doubt I’ll regret it for the rest of my life.” He glared at her as she skipped down the rigging and landed neatly on the deck. Jack handed the helm over to Bootstrap.

“You sure you chasing her is wise Captain?” Jack glanced back at him.

“We’ve been running in rings for quite long enough in my opinion. It’s time to turn the tables before her grasp gets too tight to break free from.” Bootstrap chuckled.

“Reminds me of my wife, except she was more subtle. That Oria, she’ll grab you right in the balls mate, I’d just keep an eye out, that one’s got fangs never mind claws!” Jack chuckled.

“That just adds to the fun!” Bootstrap smiled, he was getting fond of his new Captain, he could foresee a good friendship in the man. Jack strolled down the steps to where Oria was leaning against the steps railings, he met her gaze strongly, she smirked and turned to the cabin. It was time for the show-down, this time there would be no interruptions. Oria held the door open and watched as he stalked in and leaned against his desk, she closed the door behind her leaning back against it watching him, something had shifted.

Pushing herself away she strode towards him and cocked her head studying him, it was something she couldn’t put her finger on, something deeper. Jack folded his arms as she stepped between his legs till he could feel the heat radiating from her, he resisted the urge to shiver and reach out. She raised an eyebrow curiously, she leaned forwards and brushed her lips temptingly against his, the urge to respond was extremely powerful and was definitely bestirring the heat of before. He didn’t respond, Oria leaned back slightly with a small unsure smirk.

“Your patience is impressive as is your restraint.” Jack stretched up and yawned.

“I’m tired, night.” He pushed her away and flopped onto his bed placing his hands behind his head. Oria laughed briefly in surprise.

“You’ve proven you have patience. You can stop now.” He slipped his eyes closed and shuffled into a more comfortable position.

“I’m really not that interested, sleep is much more interesting at this moment in time.” Oria folded her arms and turned to regard him with considerable confusion written clearly on her face.

“You’re serious?” He nodded slightly and shuffled again.

“As a lion after meat.” He glanced out of the corner of his eye; the expression on her face was definitely amusing. Level pegging, all he had to do now was draw ahead by just a fraction, he had to get her to come to him on his terms. What surprised him was the fact that she did it all by herself without any push from him, he felt her kneel next to the bed and the briefest whisper.

“I trust you.” Jack opened his eyes and looked at her; she smiled slightly and stood up to go to her hammock.

“I thought you didn’t trust anyone?” She paused with a frown standing next to the hammock.

“You really took that diary to heart didn’t you?” He nodded earnestly, Oria shrugged, “Then I guess you’re the first.” He sat up on his elbows.

“Come here.” Oria glanced over her shoulder and watched him carefully for a few seconds before turning and standing next to the bed, his hand grasped hers and tugged her down. The second she was sat on the bed he dragged her under the covers and spooned his body around hers, his arms tight about her waist and lips hot on the back of her neck. He nipped gently at the lobe of her ear.

“I won’t betray you, I promise on my life.” She glanced back over her shoulder and nodded.

“I know.” He frowned and sat up on one elbow so he could meet her gaze easier.

“What changed your mind?” Oria studied him for a few seconds.

“A little voice from long ago, you woke it up. No one’s done that, not even me so I figure you’re something special. Besides, you came back for me even when you hated me. If that’s not a sign that you can be trusted then what is? My own parents didn’t do that.” Jack stared down at her for a few more seconds before lying back down and tugging her closer gently.

The strangest creature he had ever come across was led in his arms, completely at ease and all he wanted to do was stop any hurt from ever befalling her. He knew it wasn’t possible, she put herself out to get hurt, he couldn’t do a thing to stop anything else from happening, he couldn’t take away the pain of the past and couldn’t wrap her in cotton wool to stop the future from unleashing whatever weapons it had in store.

For some reason it killed him, hurt like hells’ teeth digging into his flesh, the only way to satisfy the hunger to protect was to vow for himself to never do anything to directly hurt any part of her. Oria shifted, she was already asleep, he had been deep in thought for several minutes, she rolled over to face him and tucked her head into the crook between his throat and collarbone, her arm loosely draped over his waist. He smiled faintly and kissed her forehead before settling himself to sleep.
