Chapter 18 - Introductions

A few seconds of silence whispered by silently as they stared at each other in shock. Jack amazed that he had said the words he had thought he would never say and the girl amazed she had heard the words at all from anyone let alone her idol. Without warning the child leapt at him wrapping both arms firmly about his neck screaming joyfully.

“I knew it, I knew it.” Oria laughed as Jack looked taken aback at the sudden attack and slowly adapted to the situation wrapping his arms about the slight girl who was dangling precariously like a bridge between the bed and Jacks’ throat. His mind was still foggy from the rum and not helped much by the previous activities which although far from completed or really engaged had fogged his mind up even more. The girl was still whispering that she had known all along and kissing his cheeks gently with tears running down her young face as she hugged him again tightly. He grinned at the enthusiasm,
“Nice to have fans you know.” Oria smirked.

“Aye, well she needs her sleep, I think she’s had enough excitement for one day.” Jack gently but firmly extricated himself from the girls’ grasp brushing the tear tracks away from her pale cheeks. Small fingers traced down the side of his face and he couldn’t help the smile that erupted. Slowly he stood up and gazed about the cabin.

“Best set up your old hammock for her to sleep in then till we get something more permanent.” The girl pouted and tugged at Jacks’ hand feverishly.

“I want to sleep with you and mama tonight. Please can I papa?” Jack opened his mouth dumbly and stared at Oria. She merely shrugged and awaited his response. Slowly he patted the girl on the head.

“Not tonight eh, maybe another night.” The girls’ face fell instantly but she nodded and trudged over to the freshly hung hammock. Oria lifted her into it carefully and whispered a few words before tugging the blanket over her. Jack had gone back up deck to regenerate some of his brain in the cool stiff sea breeze; Oria followed him up.

He was stood with his arms folded on the prow gazing out over the gently rolling waves. Slowly Oria approached him, the quiet of the ship contrasted by the distant rumble of Tortuga. He was too lost in his own thoughts to realise she was there, he jumped when her hand landed softly on his shoulder. A faint smile graced his features before he gazed back at the lilting waves.

“What are you thinking about?” Jack sighed, his eyes following the luxurious roll of a wave as it broke against the beach. He really didn’t know what he was thinking about, there was something but it was sub-conscious, perhaps it was only the information finally sinking in. Her fingers squeezed his shoulder gently and he glanced back at her.

She hadn’t changed in the years they had been apart, she still looked so innocently young, no scars, nothing, just perfection immortalized in her form for all eternity. The same trim waist and muscles despite the fact she had carried and given birth to a child there was no evidence of anything. If he hadn’t seen the physical presence of the child he wouldn’t have known any better, no one would. She frowned at his bandana.

“This is different.” Jack raised his eyes instinctively and nodded with a smile.

“Yeah, it’s from the first HMS ship I actually destroyed. I just replaced the lie with truth. Each bead has a story behind it, not a single one is a lie.” Her fingers tugged playfully at the sash.

“And this?” He grinned and wrapped his arms about her dragging her close.

“From a group of slaves I rescued from slavery. One woman was very grateful and handed it over said to wear it like a badge of honour. So I did. In fact, practically everything about me now has a story. Personally my favourite is this one.” He tugged his sleeve up to reveal the tattoo of a sparrow in flight of a rising sun. Oria ran her fingers over it gently, admiringly.

“A rising sun?” He nodded catching her eyes.

“For eternal hope, I never gave up on the hope that I’d find you again before Jones came for me. Never gave up hope that somehow I’d survive all the heartache and fear.” Oria laughed at his deadly serious face.

“Fear of what?” Jack smiled wistfully tracing her jaw line marvelling at the simple exotic appearance that he had grown to love and treasure.

“Fear that I’d lose you to someone else. Anyone else. Fear that I wouldn’t find you again and be condemned to hell without one last glance at my fallen angel. That I’d never know what had happened to Sara. That…” Oria shushed him quickly.

“You never had anything to fear, you never will. To the first, you are not going to lose me to anyone else, I’m yours like it or not, just like you are mine like it or not. To the second, clever analogy, however, I believe I resent the reference to me being Lucifer… I am far more terrifying.” Jack laughed at this and ran his fingers down to her hips. Oria smiled gently and stepped up to lean against him, he wrapped his arms about her tighter and held her close feeling her own wrap about him and her head tuck into the crook of his shoulder and neck submissively. He gazed up at the moon and prayed for this to never end.

“We’d best be getting some sleep love. Got to get sailing again in the morning if we have a crew.” Jack was loathed to speak and break this but they both knew it was necessary. Oria nodded and stepped away heading for the cabin.

:/

Jack slowly came around and felt about the bed, it was long chilled but for the area he was led in.

“I’m over here and it’s mid-morning so I suggest you get up and get dressed quickly.” He rolled over and grinned as he saw Oria fully dressed sat on his desk, “The potential crew is already gathered outside. They’re getting impatient and your daughter is beginning to think her father is as lazy as a ten year old dog.” She tossed his shirt and britches at him; he caught them and stood up swiftly with a grin.

“Why didn’t you awaken me earlier then?” He dragged his britches on and fastened the belt lazily about his slender hips.

“I tried, you were literally dead to the world, I shouted in your ears, poked you, tickled you, and poked you harder, the only thing I didn’t try was kissing you.” Jack grinned as he tugged his shirt over his head.

“Well there’s your mistake then.” She threw his jacket at him with a grin and watched as he stumbled backwards to sit on the bed.

“Well I’d better remedy that now then hadn’t I?” He grinned as she stalked towards him and captured his lips in a light kiss, she moved to step away and he wrapped his arms about her waist holding her closer and deepening the kiss.

“Now that’ what I call a morning wake up.” Jacks’ grin didn’t fade as she slammed his hat onto his head.

“Just get down there and choose a crew for gods’ sake.” She brushed his arms away and stalked out of the room. He grinned and followed only to spot a fuzz of black hair sticking up from the other side of the glass window. Jack swung open the door and spotted Will looking slightly uncomfortable crouched under the stairs and avoiding his gaze.
