For Brieseis

Achilles made his way back to his tent. His cousin Patroclus was waiting for him outside.

“What was all that screaming from?” he asked.

“Menelaus has captured Helen and Paris. They were trying to leave Troy in such a manner as to force and end to the war; they were unfortunate enough to get caught. Now Paris is paying the consequences,” said Achilles.

“You said that was Helen screaming,” said Patroclus.

“It was said Achilles. She could not bear to see her lover tormented. However Paris did not cry out, nor beg for mercy. It was as if he knew he would not get any,” said Achilles.

Just then Briseis came out of the tent.

“What has Menelaus done to my cousin?” she asked.

“Menelaus hurt your cousin’s pride more than anything else, but I dare say he won’t be sitting comfortable for a while,” said Achilles. “Had Odysseus not intervened, Menelaus would still be beating him with the leather strap. That is what he was doing when we found him, though one of the soldiers told me that he had used his bare hand at first. I did however see some ugly bruises and welts on his ass and thighs.”

“My uncle would never humiliate someone like that,” said Briseis.

“Apparently King Priam has more honor than the one leading the Greek army,” said Achilles. “ But why then has he not tried to ransom his son.”

“Priam doesn’t know he son was captured,” said Odysseus who had just arrived. “And if Menelaus has his way won’t until we are safely away from Troy’s shores.”

“And if Agamemnon has his way?” asked Achilles.

“You’ve already figured first part, let’s see if you can guess the next,” said Odysseus.

“Agamemnon wants to use the young prince as a hostage and the only effective way to do that is for the Trojans to see that he has their prince,” said Achilles.

“Precisely, but Menelaus wants to make sure Paris and Helen don’t escape into the countryside,” said Odysseus. “If that happened, finding them would be like looking for a needle in a haystack.”

“Menelaus had him securely guarded and bound,” said Achilles. “Paris and Helen are bound together and huddled in a corner like scolded children. Menelaus’s tent is securely guarded. The only thing he could do to further prevent their escape with out killing or maiming them would be to chain them up.”

“That’s what Agamemnon said,” said Odysseus. “They are now both chained to each other and to the main support of Menelaus’s tent.”

“I’m sure you didn’t come here for a chat, so what brings you here,” said Achilles.

“Neither Agamemnon, nor Menelaus will allow them to go back to Troy, even if the Trojans agree to Agamemnon’s terms. Agamemnon wants to hold Paris as a hostage to ensure compliance and Menelaus wants to make Paris suffer to assuage his wounded pride,” said

“And what do you want?” asked Achilles.

“I want to take them back to Ithaca with me. That way I can assure Priam no harm will befall his son,” said Odysseus. “When I look at Paris, I cannot help, but think of Telemachus and what I’d do if he were in the same situation. I want you to help me persuade Agamemnon to allow me to take them back with me. I don’t trust Menelaus.”

“I will help you, for Briseis’s sake,” said Achilles.

(A/N there will be more. And there will be more spanking in the next chapter I would appreciate the feedback.

Wanted: one reliable Beta reader. My spelling and grammar are bad, I know. This time I used spell check, but even it won’t catch everything

Constructive criticism is more than welcome. Suggestions will be considered.
