NOTE: I live for reviews. Being quite depressed lately about my health and missing my job, I could really use some reviews…and don't think I’m begging for cudos! I happen to love flames and constructive criticism just as much and sometimes more! Lord knows, without constructive criticism, I'd have never fixed some of the boo boos I've made!

Chapter 2 – A Visit

When James returned home, Estrella, Elizabeth’s lady's maid ran to meet him at the front door, handing him a note. “I found this on the mistress’ pillow, sir, this morning when I went in to wake her, Commodore.”

The flowery, almost ladylike script of Jack Sparrow could be told at a glance even without reading the note. James scowled. “He managed to race back here ahead of us. If he or Turner touch Elizabeth, I shall kill them with my bare hands.” He read the note.

“Dear Jamie—

My sincerest apologies for putting holes in your pretty boat. We’d meant to give Lizzy’s da a twenty-one-gun salute, but one of the guns was aimed off a bit.

As you may have surmised, Lizzy is visiting for the day, and shall return late this evening after dinner. I would never dream of letting a guest go away hungry, and Lizzy has always been one of our favorite guests.

I’d invite you along, but I somehow doubt that dinner would be nearly as pleasant for anyone. Perhaps we’ll try it some day anyway. Any friend of Lizzy’s is a friend of ours.

Sincerely and without malice,

Jack Sparrow,
Captain, Black Pearl”
August 13th, 1722

As James contemplated various amusing ways of slowly killing the pirate, there was a knock at the door, disturbing his visions of some very satisfying slow-tortures. James opened the door himself; it was Gillette.

“Sir! The Black Pearl has been sighted rounding the point! Should we set sail again, Commodore?”

“No. They have Elizabeth.” /Again./ “I received a note saying they’ll be back some time tonight to return her. I don’t want anything to happen to my wife, Captain. But I do intend to catch Mr. Sparrow immediately after Elizabeth is set free. I want you to ready the Seahawk and the Dauntless for battle, but I want no persons visible on deck of either ship. I want both ships to look like they’re laid up for the night. I also want the Seahawk re-supplied for immediate deployment to sea duty on a moment’s notice. And running dark, no lights on either ship tonight.”

“Yes Sir. We’ll catch Sparrow tonight or die trying.”

“Just get him.”

“Yes Sir!” Gillette saluted and left.

“So you see, Lizabeff, the whelp here only wanted to honor your father, but Marty...well...as you know, Marty isn’t the best aim with a gun wot’s taller than he is. His first round went wide and struck the Dauntless 'midships. While I was trying to steer away, the second volley struck her again. And when we finally got under way, his third shot went wild enough to hit just below the fort. Surely they should know that it had to be an accident. When I order a ship fired upon, ALL guns fire, and ALL shots hit.”

“I’m afraid the news in Port Royal is that you were attacking while everyone was preoccupied at the funeral, an outrageous breach of etiquette. That’s why James took off after you so quickly.”

“Well, I didn’t think that he wanted to thank me, luv.” Jack smiled gently. “I’m very sorry to hear of your father’s death. I heard he died of a fever?”

“Yes. The ague.”

“Not a good way to go at all. I expected your da to live till age took him. He wasn’t much older than me, was he?”

“He was old enough...he was forty-nine years old.”

“No, not much older, luv. I’m forty-five, myself.” He looked at Will squirming in his seat. “You knew that, lad.”

“I don’t like to be reminded how old you are. I’d like to think you’ll be Captain of the Black Pearl forever.”

“Not likely, mate. It’s more likely I’ll have my neck stretched before I reach the Governor’s age. ‘specially with Lizzy’s husband wantin’ to personally do the stretchin’. We almost didn’t get away this time.”

Elizabeth scoffed. “Surely you can’t mean that. The Black Pearl is the fastest ship in the Caribbean.”

“Tis true, but the wind was against us near the end there. If we didn’t hightail it through a hidden river I knew of on that island, we’d never have made it. We lost three spars while scrapin' between the trees. We were lucky to have enough extras in the hold.”

The conversation turned to gossip around Port Royal, including the fact that they’d requested a new governor a week before Weatherby died. “As soon as we knew it was hopeless.”

“Then it’ll be about three and a half months before the new governor arrives...maybe four months. Till then, your husband will have charge of the island. I think we’ll stay clear till the new governor arrives. I don’t want them sending another commodore to replace Jamie. I’d rather stick with the fox I know than the wolf I don’t.”

Gossip and news took up the rest of the day, and dinner was delicious. Ragetti had cooked up a wonderful meal, complete with various and sundry sumptuous dishes from around the world. Jack was glad that Pintel and his partner had come back to the Pearl; he knew they were too stupid to arrange a mutiny, so they’d stay loyal as long as he kept them happy. Ragetti was happy in the galley, and Pintel was happy that Rags was happy. It made for a content crew to have such glorious food served nightly. And Ragetti could make bilge water taste good, to say nothing of the fare they usually got from pilfering rich merchant ships.

Will and Jack, personally rowing Elizabeth back to shore, could only stare in stunned dismay when they saw the imperceptible, previously darkened ships begin firing on the Pearl.
