CHAPTER 2

A loud thumping on the door woke Captain Jack from his rum filled sleep. It was Gibbs.

“Captain, the sun is starting to rise, ye best be getting on deck.” “Yeah, yeah”, Jack muttered, still half asleep.

Jack sat up in bed and stretched his muscle-tanned arms over his head. Being a pirate kept the captain in good shape, not that many of the female persuasion got a chance to take advantage of it.

Jack swung his legs off the side of the bed, muttering to himself, ‘why does the bloody morning always have to come so early?’

He staggered to his feet and checked his belt and sash. His long sword was still intact. He shook himself to wake up a little more then reached for his tri-cornered hat that his friend Will Turner had given him. He positioned it on his head and glanced at himself in the full-length mirror on the back of the door.

He smiled at himself, his two gold teeth shining back at him. ‘Not bad for a scallywag of a pirate,’ he mused to the man looking back at him.

He reached down on the floor and picked up what was left of the rum from the night before. He tipped the bottle and the last bit flowed into his mouth. He swished it around and swallowed, then wiped his mouth with the back of his hand.

‘Okay, let’s do this,’ he said to his reflection. He marched out the door, down the corridor and up the steps to the deck.

The crew of the Black Pearl was busy and everyone had their jobs to do. It seemed a little cooler this morning than it had last night and the raising sun was just starting to come over the horizon.

“Ready the cannons,” Captain Jack barked to his crew. They were already beginning to overtake the other vessel. The Black Pearl was the fastest ship in the Caribbean so catching up to the other ship was not a difficult task.

Jack pulled his sword from its sheath and raised it high in the air. “FIRE!”
Two blasts from the cannons rang out in the quiet morning, making the ship shudder just a bit. The first cannon ball came up a little bit short.

Through Jack’s spyglass, he could see the crewmembers scurrying on deck as the second cannon black made direct contact.

“Full Ahead,” the captain yelled. The wounded vessel came to a stop just ahead of them.

“Prepare to board her,” Jack ordered as he stood on the deck.

The crew threw ropes over the bough of the ship, latching onto whatever would hold tight. The crew brought the two ships together and began jumping aboard, swords on the ready.

The new ship was smaller than the Black Pearl and Jack could see it was beginning to take on water. It wouldn’t stay afloat long, but long enough. Jack jumped to the side rail of his ship with sword in hand and leaped across the open area between the two ships.

His crew was engaged and it looked like to Jack that they were having all the fun. He ran to one of the other crew and began wielding his sword. Jack wouldn’t kill another man, unless it was necessary, but a little sparring was good for keeping him on his toes.

One good swoosh with his sword and the other man’s weapon flew out of his hand and landed on the deck near Jack’s feet.

“Does this mean you surrender,” Jack asked in his cocky way tilting his head to one side.

The man looked at him then glanced over to his other mates. It took only took a split second to realize they were defeated. The man looked back at Jack and raised his hands over his head.

“Aw, that was too easy,” Jack said with a disappointed look on his face.

“Mate,” Jack said to the man. “If you’re going to work on a ship, you have to learn to defend her, savvy?”

The man just looked at him. Captain Jack raised his foot and kicked the other man’s sword back over toward him.

“Pick up your weapon, and defend your ship you scurvy dog,” Jack ordered him.

The man lowered his hands and bent over slowly to retrieve his sword while never taking his eyes off Captain Jack.

He raised it up holding it in front of him. The sword gleamed in the sunlight.

“Now, that’s better,” Jack said, “Come on, show me what manner of man ye be made of.”

Jack made a motion with his free hand for the man to come closer. The man was obviously terrified. Jack was a real pirate while he was only a shipmate and a very naïve shipmate at that.

Jack wielded his sword in the air a couple of time and the man backed up. Jack lowered his sword and shook his head at the man pathetically.

“Ye will never make it as a pirate,” he said to him, “will ye make it as a man?”

At that the scared man grew angry. You could see it in his eyes. He raised his sword and came at Jack with fury, swinging the sword wildly.

Jack raised his sword in defense and the clang of the swords meeting was music to Jack’s ears. After a few exchanges though the other man was once again unarmed. Gibbs ran up to Jack with his own sword in hand.

“What do you want to do with him Captain?” Gibbs asked. Jack looked around at the rest of his crew holding on to the captured sea hands.

“Take em all and throw em in the brig…for now,” Jack answered, “let’s get this ship’s cargo loaded on the Pearl before this boat sinks.” Calling a ship a boat was the lowest thing a man could say about a ship.

Jack walked slowly over to the man he had just engaged with and demanded, “Where’s the captain of this vessel”?

The man didn’t reply, just shook his head. Gibbs started to lead the man away, “it’s off to the brig with ye,” Gibbs snorted.

When the man had taken a couple of steps away from the Captain of The Black Pearl, Jack suddenly raised his leg high in the air and the sole of his boot connected with the ass of the man. With one easy push, the man landed flat on his stomach on the deck of the ship.

Jack’s crew roared in laughter as the man slowly started getting to his feet. Gibbs pulled him up and led him away. Jack was disappointed and angry. One thing Captain Jack Sparrow could not tolerate was weakness.

Jack looked around at the remaining members of his crew, “we be finding the captain of his sinking ship.” The crewmembers started fanning out in all directions. Jack headed for what he assumed to be where the captain’s quarters would be located.
