Chapter 2
Kar’sav set the sleeping boy in his room. The Elder Tav’ic looked at his warrior. He was extremely upset with Kar’sav when he brought the boy. But when the blooded warrior told him about the incident he just nodded.
“This is a first Kar’sav. It was honorable to save the boy, but to uncloak yourself and bring him back is against the code.”
“I know Elder, but I didn’t know what to do. Had I left him he surely would have been killed by the fire.”
“Then you have a choice Kar’sav. You may kill him, now that he knows of us and our technology. Or you can be taken down in rank to keep him with us as part of the clan.”
“I believe it would be best to keep and train the boy. He has a warrior’s heart; he survived the attack of the ooman.”
“Only because of you.” The Elder corrected
“But I wasn’t there immediately. As I told you, I started towards the house when I heard weapons fire. He must have avoided them to stay alive.”
“I see. But you must understand this first, if we train the boy he must be trained with the other young unblooded.”
“Yes, I understand this.”
“He will never be strong enough to train with them.”
“We should let Rev take a look at him. Maybe he could strengthen him. It has been done before.”
“Yes we will start his treatments; I only hope he will be able to cope with the changes his body will take.”
Kar’sav nodded.
Hours Later
David sat on a medical table as Rev looked him over. He clicked at Kar’sav and the Elder.
“It can be done.” Rev nodded
“Then go ahead with the procedure.” The Elder nodded
To David all he heard was clicking and trills. He recognized the one that had rescued him. He was the only one with a mask on. He had wondered what was underneath the mask until he saw the Elder. He could tell he was older by the small but sharp looking hairs around his face. His ‘hair’ had grey mixed in with the black and it was adorned with many of the golden rings. Now he found himself in a room with another one. He was confused, but not quite frightened.
“Kar’sav,” The Elder turned to the warrior, “you will teach him our language. He will considered a member of you blood, your son.”
Kar’sav nodded and hoped that his mate Ri’ka and his daughter Mir’at would accept him.
“Yes, go ahead and inject him.”
Rev approached the young boy with a gun like instrument in his hand. The boy leaned away and looked at the predator. Something in him told that the creature wouldn’t allow him to be harmed. He stayed still as Rev put the instrument to his neck and then he felt a sting and passed out.
David awoke to cat like purring above him. He opened his eyes find another one of the creatures above him cooing. He sat up slowly looking into the green eyes and mandibles. The creature clicked and purred, rubbing his head. He sat up slowly and took in the being in front of him. The creature made an expression that seemed almost like a smile and patted him on the head. He knew by the look and body type it was a female. Another, small creature approached him with the same look on its face. David held himself, wondering what’s going on. Then he heard clicking behind them and they turned.
“Stop fawning over the boy. I’m glad you have accepted him, but he is not a pet.”
“I know that Kar’sav.” Ri’ka nodded, “But he’s the cutest ooman I’ve ever seen.”
“Mother, you’ve never seen an ooman.” Mir’at giggled
Kar’sav approached David and began to speak to him in the broken English, “What is your name?”
“I’m David Parksington.”
Kar’sav nodded, “I am Kar’sav, and this is my mate Ri’ka, and my daughter Mir’at. Mir’at is around your age…mental ooman age.”
“Ooman?”
“Yes, that is what we, the Yaut’ja call your species.”
David nodded trying comprehend all this new information. “What are you going to do to me?” The boy’s eyes become teary remembering his family
“I will raise you as one of my own. You are now Drav’en of the Ju’ra Clan.”
David tried to pronounce the name of the clan and watched as Ri’ka purred at his attempt.
“He’s so cute Kar’sav.”
Kar’sav shook his head, “I will teach you our language.”
David nodded, “Ok.”
Deep in David’s heart he hoped he was dreaming. He hoped to wake up in his bed with his sister snoring and mother and father still alive.
“You will train with my clan and become a warrior.” Kar’sav continued
All David could do now was nod, and then he looked up at Kar’sav. “What did they give me?”
“It was a genetic enhancer.”
“What’s that?”
“A drug that will make you more like us.”
“More like you?” David envisioned his face with the mandibles. He wasn’t sure if he liked the idea.
“Do not worry, you will not change much. Some features of your humanity will change but not much. I know for a fact that by the time you come of age you will have the regular height of a Yaut’ja. But you should age like any normal ooman till you come to your prime.”
David just stared at him. “Okay.”
“I know this will all be new to you, but things will get better and you will be a warrior I will be proud of.”
David laid down and sighed, he just wanted to sleep, and be far away from this new life.
Eleven Years Later
Drav’en tapped his chest proudly and raised his combistick. His eyes went down to his opponent who lay on the ground unconscious. There were whispers in the room. Raj’ha chuckled to his friend.
“I can’t believe Bras fell at the hands of an ooman.” He shook his head
At those words Drav’en turned viciously to Raj’ha. He approached him in a threatening manner.
“What do you want Drav’en.” Raj’ha growled
Drav’en growled back, “I thought I was just an ooman a second ago.” He cocked his head
“You’re a synthetic Yaut’ja. You will never hold true honor.”
“Maybe if I take your head that may change.” Drav’en raised his combitstick
“Enough!” The elder roared and looked at the two young bloods. “Draven, you have proved yourself worthy to go on the Hunt. Let your father know of your triumph and return in a day.”
Drav’en nodded and walked away eyeing Raj’ha.
Drav’en proudly walked into the chambers he shared with his family. He first set his site on his mother and went to her.
“Mother, I have proven myself worthy for the Hunt.”
Ri’ka’s eyes widen, “I am so proud of you Drav’en.” She hugged her son
Kar’sav and Mir’at walked in and approached Drav’en. They had already heard the good news and went to get him a weapon from the armory.
“I had confidence in you Drav’en.” Kar’sav nodded, “This is for you I’m sure you know how to use it.”
Drav’en looked down at the metal box and opened the clasp. Dra’ven looked upon the weapon he had always wanted since he saw his father use it. He trained with weapon before and knew when he first touched it he wanted one of his own.
“A smart disc.” Drav’en almost whispered, “I thank you greatly father.”
Kar’sav took in Drav’en’s form. He went from a scrawny ooman boy to a proud Yaut’ja warrior. Or at least he was half Yaut’ja now. His forehead had gotten broader and long, resembling a Yaut’jas’. Although his mouth and most of his facial features stayed the same. Strangely enough his eyes turned into yellow cat like eyes. His hair was dreaded in the same tube like fashion, but no rings adorned his hair. He was built like a normal Yaut’ja his age and just as tall. His fingers now had claws and some of his skin had green and yellow spots. He had indeed turned out quite well. Kar’sav thought back to when Dra’ven first started his training.
Drav’en would complain about his bruises and how rough the other children were. He complained about how he was changing and feeling sick all the time. It got so annoying that Kar’sav often considered putting the boy out of his misery. Then after three years he grew into routine and into the ways of the clan. He quickly caught onto the language, and started making friends.
Of course, like every child he had enemies. Most hated him because he was ooman, but soon he proved himself worthy to be apart of the clan. His skills became the talk of the ship. And by the time he was a ‘teenager’ he had many females following him around. Drav’en had all but forgotten about his former life. But when the Hunt was announced Drav’en jumped for the chance to become a blooded warrior and see his home planet once more. Kar’sav wasn’t sure if it was a good idea. He knew this was issue to address with Ri’ka.
Flashback
“Why are you so against him going to the trials to go to the Hunt?”
“He will have to go back to his planet to hunt.”
“I understand you don’t want him to hurt. But in order for him to go on he must face this.”
“He has moved on Ri’ka.”
“No he hasn’t. You may not see it in his eyes, but I do. He needs closure to continue.”
Kar’sav took a deep breath the nodded, “Fine, I hope he will be safe.”
Ri’ka embraced her mate, “He will, he has skill and knowledge. And I’m sure his knowledge of the ooman species will help him in the hunt.”
“I certainly hope so. You and Mir’at will be heart broken if he…fails.”
“And what about you?”
Kar’sav turned his head. Although he didn’t like to admit it to himself, he felt love for the boy. He was the son he always wanted.
“I would hurt too.”
Ri’ka nodded, “I know.”
Present
It was the next day; Drav’en was completely prepared for the hunt. He wore his armor and weapons proudly. The Elder approached the four young bloods. He tapped his chest at each one and then motioned to the four blooded warriors behind him. Each approached the young bloods with masks on dark soft material. Each young blood took their finished masks.
Hours before the hunt each young blood that was to go to the hunt made a sketch of what they wanted their masks to look like. Drav’en wanted his mask to have claw marks on each cheek. Then writing on the outlines of the mask, the writing claimed his clan. He couldn’t wait to bloody the cheek marks with ooman blood. He envisioned the red streaks and suddenly remembered his blood used to be red as well. But now it was glowing neon green like all Yaut’jas’.
He remembered when he first bled the new glowing blood. He’d seen other young bloods bleed and felt more like a part of the clan. The others gather around him and gasped. He smiled up at them and patted his chest. Kar’sav had been there to see his son get hurt. While the others thought he patted his chest because he took the hit well without even complaining, Kar’sav knew the real reason. Drav’en finally felt complete, like a real member of the clan, he was finally Yaut’ja.
Kar’sav patted Drav’en’s shoulder and shook it.
“I am very proud of you Drav’en. I expect you to bring home many trophies.”
Drav’en nodded, “I will Father.”
“It is time!” The Elder announced loudly
“The families of the unblooded warriors came to the ship to see their young off. The unblooded warriors stepped inside and patted their chest proudly before the doors closed.
