Some kids just have to grow up faster than others
________________________________________________________________________
Evelyn Mercer had seen a lot in her fifteen years after her husband was killed. She wanted to help and wanted to save so many kids from being like the ones who's had killed her husband. They were lost, scared, broken and had nothing to lose.
In the fifteen years though she had seen the worst and the most horrible but in the end she knew they could all be saved.
Then there was the four that no one thought could be saved. Four boys that had all been to there separate kinds of hell and had all survived.
Bobby had had a father and mother but not the right kind in any way. They hadn't wanted a son but an attack dog. They had trained him like one. They would starve him and beat him until he was use to it. Then when he was angry and cruel just like they wanted him, they gave him drugs and a gun so he could sell. By eleven he had killed four people and his parents rewarded him for it. But they were killed and he was put in a foster home. When boys thought they could beat him up he showed them they couldn't. He was violent and no one thought he could be changed.
Jeremiah had been abandoned when he was eight. His mother had taken him to the park and shot up in the public restroom and overdosed. Her boyfriend and Jeremiah's father had given it to her. He never went to claim his son. He was put in three foster homes. The first two had used him for a punching bag but when he fought back they sent him away. The last one was a white family who had a son addicted to drugs. When the father found them the boy had said Jeremiah had given the drugs to him. So he went back into the system. They believed he was hopeless.
Angel was born addicted to crack from a sixteen year old mother. His mother left the hospital without him and he was put into foster care. He was put into a foster home at two years old. They were con artist. They had taught Angel well until one day they both thought the other cheated each other out of money and killed the other. At twelve he stayed in the system where he was put in three homes and was accused of dealing drugs. They wanted to put him in jail because he couldn't be helped by the system.
Jack had had a mother and her boyfriend had left her after she got pregnant. For this she beat and starved Jack. Then she got married when Jack was eight. He raped him until the day that his mother found out that Jack was pregnant. Jack was eleven. She knew that it was her husband's fault but it didn't stop her from cursing Jack out with the worst words anyone could say. She made him get an abortion and had had the doctors tie his tubes. He ran away after his mother had tried to kill him and had no other choice but to sell himself to survive. They caught him when he was twelve. He was put in a foster home in which his foster father raped him. It was like that for a year until one night Jack couldn't stand it any more and took a knife and stabbed him. He lived but they marked Jack violent and unchangeable. Much like Bobby.
In the end though she had saved them. All of them. She took them in her home and heart and they were her children..... no matter what they did. So when the school had called telling her that Jack had ditched school once again she was disappointed. When she had heard the thump that had emanated from Jack's room she feared what she would find and ran just to find the window open.
She had ran to the window and found Jack running limply on one leg. She had called out to him but he hadn't stopped. The bathroom door was open and the inside looked a mess. Her first thought was of the other times in the past when she would find the bathroom in the same condition it usually lead to her finding needles, burnt spoons, a library card with white residue, hollowed pen containers and a book with the same residue. But she made him stop taking drugs and he seemed so much stronger......
That is when she saw it. It was there on the sink camouflaged by the white of the sink but the dark blue lines stuck out. Plus after plus and she put all the pieces together. Bobby and Jack. Jack's eyes that always tried to avoid her recently. He felt guilty like he had betrayed her and now she knew it.
Her thoughts surrounded her as she thought what must have been going through that child mind. ' Oh, what that child has had to grow through. He takes the guilt for what ever goes wrong. He still had to deal with his past and he barely was getting through the present as he held every ones trouble as his own. Now he will have to add a baby to it. Now he had the worries of not only his future but the life that grows inside of him. '
She remembered what her husband said to her one night when he was still alive as they watched that infomercial that you could never change when you saw it. Those starving children in one of those third world countries. " Honey, sometimes some kids have to grow up faster than others and sometimes there is nothing you could do about it."
At that moment she looked up at the heavens where she was sure Johnathan was and said in a whisper, " God help us all. God help him. He's just a child."
