Chapter 19 - Private Affairs
“Weren’t spying on me were you now lad?” Will stood up stiffly attempting to quell the blush and hide his embarrassment with feigned dignity. He wasn’t about to admit he had heard and seen everything from two nights ago and had been confused ever since and more than a bit curious.
“She’s too young for you surely. She barely looks my age.” Jack raised a finger warningly and Will backed off till he came into contact with the wall.
“Keep your messy crows nest out of my business lad. It’s got nought to do with you and if I catch you spying again I’ll throw you overboard.” Jack slammed his door shut behind him and Will nodded, Oria was watching the exchange from the top of the boarding plank suspiciously Sara stood bedsides her. Jack walked towards them with a grin.
“What was all that about?” Oria queried as he drew level with her.
“Nothing, let’s go and see this crew of Gibbs’.” Jack placed a firm hand on her back and pushed her in front of him ruffling the girls’ hair as he did so, Will followed several steps behind. Gibbs grinned as the quartet finally appeared on the pier.
:/
“And what’s the benefit for us?” Jack frowned as he stalked closer, hadn’t his speech to Will been rousing enough? Oria moved forwards as well wary that it could be someone intending harm pushing Sara behind her instinctively, that lesson had been learned very quickly. He stalked towards a figure in a loose white shirt with a large brimmed hat pulled low. Tugging the hat free to reveal a bonny young tanned woman.
“Anna-Maria.” He smiled warily and had it slapped off his features with a harsh resounding slap, Will leaned forwards with a grin.
“I suppose you didn’t deserve that one either.” Jack winced.
“No, that one I deserved.” Anna-Maria nodded at Will before turning her attention back to Jack with only a brief glance towards a still wary Oria.
“You stole my boat!” Jack slowly turned back to face her.
“Actually…” She slapped him again and he made a small oh sound at the sting and winced, “Borrowed. Borrowed without permission. But with every intention of bringing it back to you.” She stamped her foot furiously.
“But you didn’t.” Jack spread his arms innocently.
“You’ll get another one.” She considered this for a moment, and he flinched as she moved to point a finger at him.
“I will.” Will leaned forwards intent on getting Jack into more trouble.
“A better one.” Jack grinned.
“Aye a better one.” Will smiled and pointed towards the Interceptor.
“That one.” Jack turned on him suddenly, panic in his voice. The lad was beginning to be too much trouble.
“What one?” Will nodded towards the Interceptor and Jack nearly choked, “That one!” He turned to look at Anna-Maria and noticed her expression and conceded, that look was all too similar to Oria in a dangerous moment, “Aye, that one.” She studied the ship intently for a few seconds. “What say you?” The crew gave a general cry of agreement and poured towards the ship, Anna-Maria snatched her hat back from Jacks grasp and he took an uncertain step backwards. Oria bit back a chuckle and he glared at her.
“It’s not funny, those slaps hurt you know.” She nodded faking a serious face, Sara looked appalled that anyone had the audacity to so much as look at her father never mind slap him. Gibbs pushed his way up to Jack.
“No, no, no, no, no! It’s frightful bad luck to have a woman aboard, sir.” Jack glanced to where Anna-Maria was dragging a rather stubborn goat on board.
“It’d be far worse not to have her, besides we’ve already got two.” He pointed towards Oria and Sara who was currently being chatted to by a sailor, “Therefore we don’t have ‘a’ woman aboard we have women. It’s plural so we’ll be fine and like I said, it would be far, far worse to leave any of them behind.” Gibbs glared over his shoulder at Oria, Sara and Anna-Maria as Jack stalked back to oversee the loading of supplies. Oria merely smiled and gave a little sarcastic wave to Gibbs; Jack grasped her wrist and dragged her back on board with a warning glare. She called back for Sara with a smirk, the girl following without question and tucking her hand into Oria’s.
:/
The ship rolled violently in the oceans’ turmoil almost tossing a man overboard, Oria grasped his belt and pulled him back, he thanked her and rushed off to finish his task. Holding her hat down she turned into the violent wind as the ship reared over another wave, she slipped and slid down the deck to land against the wall on her backside beneath the helm with a bang as several crates battered the walls next to her. She cried out in shock as one barely missed her and glared at the crew.
“Why aren’t these tied down. Get them tied down, NOW.” Anna-Maria helped her to her feet and began to order several men to get rope and tie the crates down. Will watched for a few seconds before turning his attention back to the rope that had eased itself slack and tugged it tighter. Gibbs appeared next to him.
“How can we sail to an island that nobody can find with a compass that doesn’t work?” Gibbs chuckled as he tightened another rope.
“Aye the compass doesn’t point north but we’re not trying to find north are we?” Will studied him confused and followed as Gibbs headed for the helm.
“We should drop canvas, sir.” Jack kept his gaze on the compass and his other hand on the wheel.
“She can hold a bit longer.” Gibbs stepped up to him wiping the rain from his eyes only to have it replaced by another ten inches.
“What’s in your head that’s put you in such a fine mood Captain?” Jack grinned winningly his eyes fixed greedily on the compass.
“We’re catching up.” Oria scrambled up the steps and fell against Will as the ship rolled sideways. He grasped her arm and kept her steady as she made her way up the rest of the way with a grateful smile back at him. She stood behind Jack studying the compass over his shoulder.
“It’s not possible they were at least a week ahead of us.” Jack pointed to the compass as if it held all the answers and she should instead of addressing him be addressing the contraption.
“He’s not making good time.” Gibbs glanced up at the storm clouds.
“Probably got slowed down with this storm. Who knows how long its’ been brewing to get it in such a rage.” Oria glanced at him and back at Jack, the ship rolled again and a man fell into her pushing her into Jack. He dropped the compass to balance himself and catch her as she slipped on the already ice like planks.
“Watch your footing you dog brained idiot.” The man looked uncomfortable and nodded nervously glancing between the two.
“Sorry Captain.” Jack gave a quiet scream as he saw his compass heading for the side of the ship. Oria dived for it and caught it just as it was about to go over the side, she held it up for him to see and Jack gave a relieved breath as she passed it back to him.
“Should keep a better grip on your belongings.” He grinned as he snapped it open cockily once more.
“I had a good grip of the most important; I just forgot to hold onto the current second most important.” Oria rolled her eyes and made her way down the steps catching another stumbling man before he fell flat on his face. Jack scowled after her, “Oria, you’d best check on Sara.” She nodded and changed direction heading for the cabin. Nearly an hour later he joined her in their room.
“Go up on deck, keep us on course, I need to sleep. I’ll keep an eye on her don’t worry.” Jack glanced across to where the girl was peering worriedly over the edge of the hammock. He lifted her out and put her into the bed. Oria nodded and caught the compass one handed as he tossed it lazily at her. She watched silently as Jack clambered into bed with Sara and hugged her close whispering comforting words as she clung against him as the ship rolled. Oria smiled at the scene before jogging up the steps and out of the room. The crew had slowed down when Jack had disappeared.
“Alright get yourselves moving, this ship’ going through the night. Sort yourselves into shifts if you want but I want a full working crew up here till the Captain returns.” She strode up the steps to the helm and Cotton stepped away respectfully as she snapped the compass open and studied it focusing on the Isle De Muerta.
