Chapter 20 - Tia Dalma

Oria watched as the long boat was lowered into the ocean, Jack stood next to her looking slightly uncomfortable. She glanced at him, “Don’t worry; she’ll know who you are now. That stunt you pulled on the three HMS ships will have got you noticed.” Jack studied her.

“But what if she wants, you know…” Oria laughed slightly.

“Odds are that she might. Just go along with it, she’ll take care of you. It won’t be unpleasant at any rate.” Jack scowled in confusion.

“You mean you’re not going to get jealous or anything.” Oria smiled gently.

“I’m not going to lay a claim on you if that’s what you mean. You’re free to lay with whoever you wish.” Jacks’ scowl deepened.

“What about you?” Oria smirked.

“You think anyone else is going to get close enough? Now get in the damn boat or we’ll die of old age!” Jack stumbled down into the boat and watched as she scrambled down after him, he took up the oars and began to row them over the shallows and into a narrow jungle framed channel that led into the island. He watched as the trailing fronds of palms and ferns brushed past them, several flickering as a wild animal flitted away from the disturbed water, the hiss of a jaguar as it pounced away and glared down at them from a branch overhanging the river. Oria watched it suspiciously till they were too far away for it to jump into the boat; Jacks’ voice broke through the musical script of the jungle.

“Doesn’t seem fair you know.” Oria met his gaze quietly.

“Life isn’t fair Jack; it’s up to you what you do. I won’t judge you either way.” He sighed and continued rowing in silence till they came upon the opening glade of water; Oria glanced about the small huts as dark skinned men and women glared out suspiciously. Children waved merrily, their toes trailing in the warm water as they sat on the edges of the wooden huts platforms.

“Which one are we heading to?” Jack queried as his eyes scanned the various huts, Oria pointed to one directly behind them, slightly separate from the rest.

“That one, we can moor the long boat to the platform.” Several seconds later they were stood looking up at the glowing door of Tia Dalma’s hut, Oria glanced across at Jack, he looked very nervous, “Stay calm, she won’t bite.” She headed up the steps hearing Jacks’ boots slowly follow suit, she waited at the top till he joined her before knocking on the door.

“Come in.” A light voice called out, Oria stepped in first, the woman smiled as she saw her visitor.

“Oria De Monara, long time, no see. Tell me has Davy Jones finally released you?” Oria smiled.

“No, I’ve come to introduce someone, he wants some advice.” Tia’s eyes slid over her frame before drifting to Jack, the smile widened and she stood up serenely, her eyes glaring like a predator who’s just spotted their prey.

“Well, you are an interesting one, Jack Sparrow.” Jack glanced at Oria, she nodded encouragingly and he stepped forwards holding out a hand, much to Tia’s amusement, she placed her hand in his and watched as he kissed it gently. Tia stalked around him, her eyes taking in every single detail of him.

“So you are the one who has tamed my little dragon.” Oria frowned at her.

“There has been no taming.” Tia smiled condescendingly at her.

“Of course not.” Oria was about to retort when Jack interrupted her.

“I need direction on how to get to the Isle De Muerta.” Tia looked him up and down again before sitting behind her desk.

“I have something that will help you, but, you will have to gamble it off me.” Jack glanced backwards at Oria, she nodded again and he sat opposite Tia.

“What is the gamble?” Tia smiled revealing slightly blackened teeth.

“The gamble is nothing more than a game of chance with dice. If the dice show two or more on blue then you get the item that will help you with the Isle De Muerta’s location. If they show red on two or more then I get one night with you treating me as you would her.” She pointed to Oria; Jack swallowed slightly but nodded, “Oria, you will roll the dice.”

Oria nodded and took up the three dice; her gaze met Jacks’ as they fell from her palm and landed on the table. The trio gazed down at it, three blues glared up at them, Tia chuckled and delved into a pocket, she pulled out a small black box and held it out to Jack. Jack took it and flipped it open; he raised an eyebrow with disappointment, “Is this a joke? A compass that doesn’t point North?” Tia smiled.

“That is a very special compass; it points to whatever you most desire in all the world. It will show whoever holds it the direction to their desire, whether they know it or not.” Jack smiled as he realised where the compass was pointing, his eyes met Oria’s she rolled her eyes. He cleared his throat as he snapped it closed.

“So it will show me where the Isle De Muerta is located?” Tia nodded and spread her arms.

“If that is what you want then yes.” Jack nodded.

“One more question, I want to know how I can remove my servitude from Davy Jones’. Oria says there is a way but can’t say anymore.” Tia glared at Oria accusingly, but there was still a twinkle of mirth.

“You have been telling him things he has no right to know.” Tia returned her gaze to Jack, “There is a way, Davy Jones long ago cut his heart out and locked it in a chest. He buried it on some distant island where no one would find it.” Jack nodded enthusiastically.

“Good, good, so this will show where that is as well?” Tia nodded.

“Yes.” Jack smiled deeply, glad he had come after all, Oria suddenly disappeared from the room with a squeak of fright. Tia called out.

“It won’t get you.” Oria peered around the side of the doorway suspiciously, “There are more out there than in here.” Jack stared in confusion as Oria slipped back inside alternately glaring suspiciously at something in the rafters of the hut, the outside and Tia. He stared up at the rafters but couldn’t see anything that would evoke fear in someone perfectly happy to go plunging into raging battles. Tia chortled when she realised Jack was completely unaware, “You have not told him!” Jack scowled and glanced between the two.

“Told me what?” Oria waved a hand.

“It doesn’t matter.” Tia was enjoying herself too much though as she rocked in her chair with laughter.

“Ah Jack Sparrow, you have much to learn about my little dragon! Now Oria is fearless faced with anything, except one, she only has one fear.” She glanced up at Oria, “Are you going to tell him or shall I?” Oria folded her arms.

“Neither, he does not need to know.” Tia smiled and continued regardless.

“Spiders, any size or shape, you show her a spider and she falls to pieces. All because of a tale her cousin told her when she was little, about how if they bit you, little baby spiders would emerge a few days later from under your skin.” She chortled evilly as Jack fought to bite back a grin; Oria sighed and turned away, a slight blush over her cheeks. Jack glanced up at the ceiling, a tarantula was crawling along one of the rafters, its’ furry legs flicking over the wood in search of prey. Oria glanced up and shivered, Jack stood up and headed for the door.

“Well lovely as it is to sit here and chat, we have treasure and chests to find. So we bid you farewell.” He smiled and headed out of the door, Tia moved swiftly and grasped Oria’s arm before she too could leave and turned her to face her.

“You should watch yourself.” Oria stared at her on confusion.

“What?” Tia repeated the phrase again.

“You should watch yourself, it is no longer just you alone anymore.” Oria nodded.

“I know.” Slowly Tia Dalma released her grasp and watched her jog down the steps and jump into the long boat. Their eyes met briefly before Tia shut the door and headed back to her table to study the crabs’ claws, just to ensure they had been correct about their prediction. Every time she cast they gave the same answer, she smiled, that was an interesting development…
