Chapter 20 - Foreplay
The storm had abated after several days of torturous sailing, they had lost one crew man to the sea but other than that the ship and its’ crew were relatively unscathed. Oria was sat with Sara on a pair of barrels teaching her a game of cards. Laughing together as they made jokes and fake rules, Oria letting the girl win without Sara realising. Will stepped up to them and waited till Oria noticed he was there. She smiled as she spotted him.
He wasn’t the only one amazed by the change in her with the girls’ appearance. Somehow the little girl had managed to tame down the fire and make her into something akin to a human. Oria was no longer as quick to anger and all because of a small child’s presence, as if she was the ice that quelled the fire.
“Will, are you alright?” He nodded and glanced over the cards for a few seconds before speaking.
“I was wondering if you would give me a bit of tutoring on pirate sword play.” Oria nodded and folded the cards up passing them to Sara who packed them away neatly. She was still incapable of keeping herself still for long periods of time, even if her mind wanted to her heart always drew her back to the action.
“Why don’t you go and ask the Captain to show you how to guide the ship.” Oria whispered with a grin to Sara. They had explained the importance of keeping her fathers’ identity secret the same day as they had told her. Eventually they had come to the agreement that she could only use ‘papa’ when they were in their cabin and no one else was. Sara had been thrilled at the conspiracy and been more than willing to participate in it and was playing her part well.
:/
Jack glanced down from the helm at Oria; she had been teaching Will some of the dirtier moves of sword play and how to counter them for the past two hours. He watched her prance about the lad, her feet as light as a deer’s on the deck. Sara was sat on a barrel next to him watching her quietly his hat on her head almost but not quite drowning her in the vast size of it compared to her.
“Will I able to fight like mama one day?” Jack looked down at her in surprise; he had thought the girl would already have been taught how to wield a sword.
“You mean you ain’t been taught yet?” She shook her head the hat slipping lower, she pushed it back up with a grin and folded her legs under her turning her attention back to the lesson on deck.
Oria swung a mock blow to his right and Will tried to retaliate but she spun and smacked his left hand side with the flat of her blade. He gave a surprised cry, she turned to face him panting slightly, the heat was strong and they had been at it easily for a good two hours because of the boy’s determination to learn the moves. Jack knew Oria didn’t have the heart to turn him down when he was so eager to learn. Will was shaking his head despairingly as he wiped the sweat from his brow and caught his breath.
“I get confused every time you do it, in fair play you wouldn’t make a mock blow. Its’ confusing, how am I supposed to counter it.” Jack motioned for Gibbs to take the wheel and drew his own sword as he jogged down to the deck. Gibbs glanced down at the girl sat next to him, her gaze was still on the fighters and he shook his head.
“Like this lad.” Jack stood where Will had been stood moments before, he nodded to Oria encouragingly. She raised her blade and moved in the same attack pattern, fluidly aiming to strike his right while using the impulsion to turn on her heels and reverse the blade to slice into his left. Jack blocked the right blow and switched his blade smoothly to the left blocking that before raising his sword and pressing it against her throat from behind. Pulling backwards slightly to bring her off balance, she fell back against his chest with a slight cry of surprise. Jack smirked at the success of the move, he had been thinking about how to counter this particular movement all the time they had been apart.
“See lad, its’ all in the balance, for her to turn sharply her weight needs to transfer too quickly. You tip her like this and she has no choice but to surrender or lose her ability to breathe and fall onto her backside.” Oria dropped her sword and attempted to drag his arm away from her throat. He refused to relent, he was enjoying the vulnerable position he had her in, it was enticing. She smiled as she realised he was studying her intently and slipped her hand down and against his waist swiftly drawing his dagger and twisting in his grasp sharply to pin it against his own throat with a grin. He dodged backwards with a playful smile, “Course if you’re going to do that don’t have a blade where she can reach it or hold her for too long.” She tossed the blade back to him and bent to retrieve her own sword keeping her eyes on Jack warily. Will nodded not realising they had just been flirting which each other in the odd way they seemed to manage without drawing attention to the fact. Oria stood facing him once more her sword at the ready.
“Are you ready?” Will nodded and watched as she lunged for his left before swiftly changing tack and spinning her back to him as she swung for his right. He blocked it as Jack had demonstrated and leapt forward to catch her before she could right her balance and retaliate with another move. He took a swift step back and felt her weight slip onto his chest as he knocked her balance off. The clatter of a sword rang out as her hands flew to his arm to steady herself. He smiled at Jack and eased her back upright carefully.
“Well, how was that?” Jack nodded grinning, the lad was a quick learner and he was beginning to like him. He hadn’t interfered in Jacks’ business recently and was treating him with due respect which was always a good mark in Jacks’ books.
“Good that was good and you see she had no way to escape or defend herself. She was left completely at your mercy.” She nodded as Will passed her the fallen blade with a grateful smile. Jack stepped forwards, “Course there is an alteration of that.” Oria frowned at him as she sheathed her blade.
“There’s no need for him to learn that, its’ rarely used now. Few still have the agility to do so.” Jack nodded.
“Aye, but you can teach him how to counter it and how to do it. Here lad watch.” He brushed the boy aside once more; Oria rolled her eyes and drew her sword again steadying her breathing.
“Ready?” He smiled playfully.
“As always.” Oria smirked as she lunged, tipped like before and twisted halfway as if to strike at his right but turned back at the last minute to lunge again for his left. Jack smiled as he jumped to her right and she almost fell as her balance shifted precariously with nothing to strike against. He grasped her wrist and tugged her back upright to land flush against him, he smiled, “Course you wouldn’t catch her, you’d let her fall then stab her in the back. Just seemed wrong to let you fall love.” She glared and pushed herself away from him with a playful smirk.
“That was a foul trick Captain Jack Sparrow and I demand vengeance.” She feigned an insulted face with a grin. Jack laughed and bent his knees slightly as she mimicked him also, their blades touching mid-way.
“What might be the terms?” Jack whispered and she smiled cockily.
“If I win you are to give command of this vessel over to anyone who I deem fit and serve them as a loyal slave without question to any of their commands for one day.” Jack smirked and began to circle.
“And if I win you are to wear a dress for an entire day that I choose.” She raised an eyebrow curiously, he grinned and Oria shrugged.
“Deal.” She tapped his blade aside and leapt into a lunge; he parried and dodged to the side.
“At least let me remove my jacket first!” He spluttered but the grin on his face deterred from the fake annoyance in his voice. She shook her head with a laugh.
“You were in the position of ready, rules of engagement Captain Jack Sparrow or perhaps you had forgotten them?” He frowned at her as the crew gathered around to watch the light hearted brawl. She lunged again but dodged at the last minute to smack his thigh with the flat of her blade. He leapt to the side with a yelp and stared at her in offence.
“And I suppose that’s in the rules of engagement is it?” Will was laughing with the crew as Oria shrugged with a grin while the Captain rubbed some feeling back into his thigh feverishly. She shrugged her jacket off and tossed it at Will, Jack merely glared at her as she motioned cockily with her hand for him to attack.
“Come on Jack, don’t you want to play? Here Jack; come on boy, come and play.” Oria laughed at his pointedly ‘I am unimpressed’ glare combined with amused smirk.
Eventually once he had removed his jacket also the fight began again, more aggressive this time as both pirates determination struck in. Oria swung wildly but Jack was ready and they clacked their blades together several times in parries, reposts and general strikes. Jack smiled, he had spotted her weakness, her attack was still strong, still too strong for him to reply to. Her defence was also prominently held in vast strength not that she gave him the opportunity to really push it.
If he wanted to defeat her he was going to have to be sneaky once more, and knowing he couldn’t match her agility he moved to bring a back swing against her side. She stepped backwards to avoid the blow and her foot caught in a coil of rope. She fell backwards startled and twisted to her side to catch herself mid-fall, the movement meant she had to abandon her sword.
Jack stepped over the rope to her and bent to trap her against his frame wrapping an arm about her waist and dragging her upright before she could regain it herself. He forced her hips back into his discreetly with a triumphant grin.
“I believe this means that I win?” He purred against her ear catching the corner of a smirk on her lips.
“Not exactly.” He frowned and felt her fingers creep along his waist towards the dagger once more; he dropped his sword and clasped her wrist tightly. She smiled and chuckled slightly, “A well learned lesson I see, about time too.”
“Now have I won?” She nodded slightly with a grin.
“Aye, I admit defeat.” The crew cheered and coins were passed hands as the losers joked with the winners. None noticing the look of promise Oria and Jack exchanged as they parted company and she headed up to the helm to get Sara.
