Rivers Run Deep

Chapter 27

Kire’Baa turned another corner, and looked around. No one challenged him, no one dared. But still, he had to be careful. He knocked lightly on the door, and it slid open, the occupant inside, grunting in question, before letting him inside. Kire’Baa turned and pulled the female hard against his chest, pulling her thin dreads and hair back, forcing her to look up to his towering presence. “Lee’tha,” he growled seductively, and threw the female to the bed across the room.

“The last time you came here, you said would be your last!” she scolded, clutching her thin dress to her breast. “What do you want Kire!?”

“I want far more than you think,” he said, prowling around her bed, sniffing the air. There was the scent of more than three males, but they had long gone. “Still at it I see.”

“You’ve left me little choice! You denied my ritual!! Then raped me yourself! I can never mate now! I can only do this!!!” She threw her fist at him, a hair brush in her hand, the handle more than sufficient to cause some scratching.

Kire’Baa grabbed her arm, and bent it back, the brush falling to the bed. “I can make it so no one will look at you Lee’tha, if you do what I tell you, I will make life here a little easier.”

“Like the last time!”

Kire forced her down on the bed, her legs bent at her knees and under her. He tore her dress down the middle, hurling his body into hers. She let out a defining scream. She wasn’t ready for him. She would be hurt for sure. “You helped me with Uni, to get rid of the ooman bred bitch!!! You will help me AGAIN!!!” He threw his weight into the female with each word he spoke, each thrust harder and deeper than the last. Lee’tha lay beneath him crying, the pain was almost unbearable. “If you do not,” he roared as his seed erupted into her. When his climax was over, he took a vile from his belt, pulled off the cork, and poured the contents into the female’s mouth. He then pulled up on his hands to watch her before pulling out of her body. “I will make sure that Ver’On learns that you poisoned Uni.”

“He will want to know why. And I will tell him!!!”

Kire’Baa grabbed her throat. “You will make up something, if you wish the same fate as yours, NOT to befall your younger sisters.”

“YOU WOULDN’T!!” Kire threw his weight into her one last time, before rising. He used what was left of her dress to wipe her blood from his flesh.

“Don’t disappoint me. Get close to the ooman, then give her the poison, as you had given it to Uni.” He dropped a pouch on the bed, the contents soft inside. “Put it in her food this time. It will work faster.”

Lee’tha took the pouch and curled up into a ball and cried. Kire’Baa left, his own mate would be wondering where he was. He would have to stop off and wash. The stench of Lee’tha was making him ill.

“What…possessed you?” Ver’On asked, trying to remain calm. “What possessed you to attempt to beat the drums?”

El just looked at him, she could tell he was angry, but it wasn’t directed at her. “I was alone,” she sighed. “The garden is not a place for me right now.”

“What? The children are climbing the trees like crazy. The females can’t keep them out of them. They never used to climb them this young.”

“Doesn’t matter. I wasn’t enjoying myself there. I was alone, ignored, and I refuse to be threatened by a pregnant female. I will never strike one who is expecting, and they are counting on that. They hiss, and growl at me, one of them nearly threw her child across the grass, just to keep him away from me. Do you know how much that hurt me to see?! The kids were suffering because of me. I left so they could be happy. And to over stress a pregnant female is ludicrous! Do you want them to go into labor early!?” Ver’On glared at her, his mandibles flexing angrily. El at once knew the error of her words. “Ver’On, I’m sorry. I didn’t mean it like that.”

“Are you saying I would do them harm?!” he hissed, forcing her to walk backwards into the room. She shook her head no. “Do you believe me to be an unfeeling, cold hearted, wretched male, who wishes harm to befall the mothers of our young?!” Her heart raced with each growl that escaped him. She stumbled on the step leading to the resting bowl at the side window. She fell to the pillows below. Unlike this resting bowl, it didn’t have a table in the middle. Ver’On stalked down the steps, kneeling in the pillows, grabbing El’s knees and pulling her to him. She’d never seen him like this, and for the first time, she was afraid, truly afraid of him.

His hands clamped around her shoulders like iron, his chest resounded with growls the likes of which she’d never heard. “If you ever…” he began, clutching her neck in his hands, “…ever say those words again…” She nodded even before he got the rest of the words out of his mouth. “…I will forget what you did for me…and I will kill you.”

“I’m sorry,” she whispered, feeling his grip lessen off her neck. Ver’On rose and left her, sealing the door to the one room he forbade her to go in. El pulled a pillow to her chest, crying her relief. Her shoulders hurt, there would be bruises, she was sure. She curled with the pillow, rubbing her right shoulder as she cried. “I’m sorry Ver’On, I’m sorry.”

“El?” Ver’On shook her shoulder again. “El?” She snapped her eyes open to find Ver’On looking at her, worry etched in every curve of his face.

“Ver’On? I’m sorry, what?” Ver’On stepped closer to her, and gently sniffed the air. He then grunted as he nodded. “What?”

“There was incense burning in the Cot-la room, wasn’t there?”

El stood there, looking at him, thinking. “There…were small burners going…yes. Why?”

He laughed gently. How could he be angry with her? He pulled her to a gentle embrace. “You must not go there again,” he said, rubbing her back through her dress.

“You’re not mad at me?”

“No, but if you go there again, the incense will affect you again. I think you were just hallucinating.”

“I was?”

“You kept saying you were sorry. What were you sorry about, if you were not hallucinating?”

El pushed further to his shirt covered chest. “Dear god, I was drugged again.”

Ver’On purred to ease her racing heart. “Speak to me of today. What happened?” He made her step back. “Why did you leave the garden?”

“I’ll tell you, Ver’On, but can you do something for me first?”

“Anything.”

“Would you stop spinning around, please?” He held her in his arms as she collapsed on the floor. “I need some air, can we go outside? It’s a beautiful night.” Ver’On picked her up. The effects of the incense wasn’t going to be damaging, because of the breathing device she wore, but she was going to have a head ache when she woke up. Younger Yautja often reacted this way too. She would recover, all she needed was some rest.

“Come, My’El, I will slide you beneath the stars, and hold you while you sleep.”

“You will?”

“Yes, I will.”

“Don’t forget the bunny ears. You look so cute in the bunny ears.” At that Ver’On laughed, he would have to ask her what ‘bunny ears’ were.

She woke up to a soft purring in her ear that quickly turned to a buzzing pain. She opened her eyes, to have dozens of shiny needles slicing through her eyes. It hurt to see, it hurt to move, it hurt to…oh hell it just plain hurt! What did he do? She tried to move her hands, only to find them tied, tightly above her head. “What the fu…” her own whispers sounded like someone shouting at her through a bull horn, two inches from her ears.

“Easy El,” it was Sol, he pressed a cup of water to her lips and let her drink. Or at least she tried. She gagged, and nearly threw up. “Its got medicine, it will help you.”

“Now I’m a prisoner?” she said, more of a statement than a question. “Was this Kire’Baa’s demand?”

“No. This is Ver’On’s insistence. Apparently you tried to attack him last night.”

“Did I hurt him?”

Sol laughed. “Not that kind of attack.”

“Oh shit…” she sighed.

“What did you say? The translator didn’t get that.”

“Forget your innocent ears heard it, and don’t bug me for more. Oh god I think I’m gona throw up.” Sol pulled over a bucket, apparently used for the very purpose all night. El promptly did just what she said. Sol held her hair back, wiping her brow and face with a cold cloth. “What’s wrong with me?” she asked.

“Reaction to inscense,” Sol replied, holding the cup of liquid up again. “Just drink a little. It will help.”

She did, and it hit her stomach like a rock. She coughed, as he took the bowl away. “Where’s Ver’On?”

“Probably out busting a few heads. You’ve been out of sorts for three days. The worst was last night, apparently.”

“Please, Sol, untie me. My arms hurt.”

“I wish I could, but until the healer gets the results from the blood samples he took this morning, I dare not. You have…” and Sol leaned close to her neck, smelling her skin. “…the most powerful scent. I’m Surprised Ver’On was able to resist you as long as he has. I’ve only been here a few hours, and I want to be close to you.”

“Back off Sol,” she tried to growl, all she did was make herself choke, and cause Sol to laugh. “I thought this thing in my nose was supposed to make it so I could breathe any air?”

“It is. It does. There’s nothing wrong with it.”

“Then what happened?”

“You lived.” El looked at him. “The device neutralized the toxins in the air, making it acceptable for you to breath, even when you breathe in through your mouth. Apparently it couldn’t remove all the toxins of the incense, and you inhaled some of it. The good news is it didn’t kill you, which would have happened the moment you walked into the Cot-la room and taken yoru first breath, without the device. Instead, it diminished the toxins to tolerable levels. UNfortunately, you reacted to it, and went into heat. Ver’On is sporting quite the attitude because of it.”

“Is he ok?”

“He’s fine. He just went to bust a few heads to calm down.”

“Not his students I hope.”

“No, he’s sparing, and last I heard, he’d only broken one warrior’s arm, another’s ribs, and popped his own kneecaps.”

“Dear god! He must be in agony!”

“And enjoying every moment of it.” Sol looked up at the gently tapping at the door. He made sure the bedroom door was closed, before proceeding to the main door and to open it. The healer was there, with a young female.

“I have the results of the tests,” the healer stated, stepping inside, and leading the female into the bedroom, where El was still tied to Ver’On’s staff, after he’d jammed it into the bed frame. “You can release her now. She’ll be fine. Lee’tha here will help her dress. She should stay off her feet for a while. And definitely stay our of the Cot-la rooms.”

“Oh I’ve no intention to go in there again,” she said as Sol released the straps around her wrists. The female was there, helping her get to her feet and into bed. She turned her attention to the healer. “Excuse me.”

“Yes,” he replied, turning, towering over Sol by at least two feet.

“Thank you.”

“I did nothing. You did it all.”

“Well, still, thank you.”

“I will show you out healer. El, I will return shortly. Ver’On asked for me to retrieve him the moment you were released.”

“Ok. Thanks Sol, I mean it.”

“I know. Get dressed, or whatever it is that you do, then get some rest.”

El heard the door close, and the female that was left with her, set a new dress beside her. “That’s not mine,” she said.

“It is now,” the female replied. “Your last Garment is…”and she looked around the room, “over there…and there…and…”

“Ok, ok, I get the idea.”

“You must really care for Ver’On. Normal mates would not tolerate being restrained like that.”

El looked at her arms, then to her. “Do I look normal?”

The female laughed. “You are different,” she laughed, “but still normal. You give your body to your mate just as we do.”

“I wish I could,” she signed. “What’s your name?”

“You want to know my name?” the female sounded genuinely surprised.

“Yeah, is there anything wrong with that?”

“Well, no, I just assumed…”

“Assumed what?”

The female shook her head. “Never mind. I am called Lee’tha. I’m…assistant to many on this ship.”

“Well, I’m El, I’m…about as out of place here as you can get.” El looked at her wrists, they were bruising up badly, and swelling. Her arms showed scratches, and her shoulders had bruises on them, right where she was sure Ver’On had grabbed her. “Damn, I’m a mess.”

“We’ll get you cleaned up. Come, I will run a bath for you.”

“That sounds like a WONDERFUL idea. Whow!” Even with Lee’tha’s help, El had trouble standing.

Ver’On was like a mad thing. Three warriors were already nursing deep muscle bruises, and yet still he was fighting. Thankfully he hadn’t killed anyone yet. The newest opponent crouched to receive Ver’On’s charge, but it was he who was in for the surprise. The younger male’s plan was to use Ver’On’s forward momentum to flip him over, then pin him to the mat, perhaps squeeze some of the fight out of him by applying pressure to his neck.

Ver’On however, knew the tactic. It was the first one he mastered when he first began his training. When the male reached to grab his belt to begin the maneuver, Ver’On twisted to his left, and threw his weight behind his left arm, as he brought it up and broke the younger hunter’s elbow. The younger howled in pain, grasping at his arm that Ver’On still held. “IN BATTLE, YOUNG BLOOD!” he shouted. “YOU NEVER USE THE MOST OBVIOUS TO REPEL YOUR ATTACKER!!!” He dropped the younger hunter to the floor, others of his clan came over and pulled him free of the mat. “WHO’S NEXT!?”

“Ver’On?” The blooded hunter turned to the young blood at the door. He knew the voice, and knew he wasn’t supposed to be there. “She’s asked for you to return.” And the young blood bowed.

Ver’On looked to the rest of the warriors, as he straightened his practice tunic. “You are lucky,” he said with pride, walking towards Sol. “My mate requests me. Continue! I will return another time.”

The warriors watched him leave, and once out of earshot, began to whisper among themselves, of how he could not touch his so called mate.

Outside Ver’On bombarded Sol with questions. “When did she wake?”

“Only an hour ago. I waited for the healer, as you said. He came by about ten minutes ago. He said she’ll be fine.”

“Did you release her?”

“Yes. The healer’s assistant is with her. She’s helping El get cleaned up.”

“My poor El. I didn’t want to do that to her.”

“It was for the best I’m sure. Her scent, even now, is still very strong.”

“You are Kadji, but I did not give you permission to…”

“I only smelled her. She’s untouched. I would never go against you Ver’On.”

“Remember that. What was she doing when you left?”

“Sitting on the bed. Lee’tha is…”

“LEE’THA!”

“Yes, the healer’s assistant.”

“She’s no healer’s assistant! She’s a common whore!” Sol followed as Ver’On began to run back to his quarters.

As they entered they could hear females laughing, and found El sitting in the middle of their bed, with Lee’tha beside her, combing El’s hair. Lee’tha at once lost her smile, and her carefree attitude, as Ver’On nearly flew across the room and grabbed her arm. “Ver’On! What are you doing?”

“Sol, get her out of here, NOW!”

“At once.”

“Ver’On!? What are you doing? I don’t like to repeat myself!”

Ver’On slid across the covers, pulling El into his arms. His body was covered in a film of sweat, and his natural musky scent was strong as he crushed her body to his. “Never interact with that female again,” he said, nipping her neck carefully. “I don’t make many demands of you. But this I must insist. NEVER socialize with that female again.”

“Ver’On, why? What’s wrong?”

“Please El, don’t. I can’t explain it. I just don’t feel right about her.”

“Is it because she’s the ship’s girl?” Ver’On looked at her. He didn’t want to embarrass her. “She told me. She’s the first female to actually be civil to me, and when I asked why, she told me. She’s not well liked either. We got along great. Now does that mean that I’m going to lye on my back for any male that walks my way?” Ver’ON growled deeply, “No.” and he sighed in relief. “She’s as lonely as I am, Ver’On. Please. Don’t send her away.”

“I don’t trust her.”

“So don’t. What is she going to do? She’s not respected on the ship to weald any power. She can try to hurt me, but hey,” and she raised her arm, flexing her tiny muscles. “I think I can take her.” Ver’On laughed, then he looked at her. She seemed happier now, than she had been all those other days that she’d return from the gardens. How could he deny her this? How could he say no to having a friend?

“There will be restrictions!”

“Ok.”

“She is forbidden to go into the gardens.”

“I don’t want to go in there anymore anyway.”

“She is not to take you back to the Cot-la rooms.”

“I’m staying out of there for sure!”

“And when you are together, Sol is to be with you. ALWAYS.”

“Sol has training, and hunts to go on. Do you really want to restrict him that way?”

“He is Kadji, he is to be here, with you, when I cannot. When I am here, he can train and do what ever he wishes.”

“A personal guard?”

“Yes. Of sorts.”

“Alright. Anything else?”

“NEVER accept anything from her, I don’t trust her, but if her companionship is what will make you happy, I will tolerate her presence here. The moment you feel uncomfortable around her, you tell Sol. He will know what to do. Or tell me, and I will deal with her.”

“Ok.”

“You agree to these restrictions?”

“Yes. Can I make one of my own?”

“Yes.”

“She’s not to come in here again, in this room. I don’t know what it is, but when she sat down to do my hair…I wanted to scratch her eyes out.”

“This is your room, your bed, where you sleep with me. Why would you want another female in your bed? Or would you?”

“Don’t even go there!” she warned, slapping his shoulder.

Ver’On nuzzled her neck. “I must go. You may socialize tomorrow in one of the lounges along the outer corridor.”

“Where we can see the stars?” she asked excitedly.

“Yes,” he laughed, “where you can watch the silly stars.” He nuzzled into her neck once more, than made her lye down. She was tired, he could tell. As much as she tried to squeeze him back in her arms, her strength just wasn’t there. “Rest now, My’El, I will have words with Lee’tha.” He hadn’t left the room, before he could hear her breathing, soft and even, sleep taking her to peace.

Sol was in the main chamber, Lee’tha still in his grasp. Ver’On looked the female up and down. She hadn’t changed. She reeked of males, one of which he was surprised to smell on her, but this was Lee’tha, she didn’t keep her legs closed for any male. “You will not socialize with other males, while you are with my mate,” he warned. Lee’tha nodded, but still Sol would not let her go. “You will bathe and cleanse the stench from your flesh before ever setting foot near her.” She nodded. “And you will dress as a respectable female. Do you understand?!” It wasn’t a request. She nodded. “You will never be alone with her. Either Sol or myself will be with her. And Lee’tha,” he stepped closer to her, grasping her neck in his hand, gently squeezing tighter with each word. “If anything, so much as makes her fearful, I will slowly choke the life from your useless body. Do you understand me.”

“Yes,” she gasped, nodding at the same time.

“Good. Now get out of here, before I change my mind.” Sol closed and locked the door after she left, turning to Ver’On, thoroughly confused.

“Who is she Ver’On?”

“She was a friend of Uni’s, or so I thought.”

“Do you think she will do harm to El?”

“I don’t know. I couldn’t put my finger on it when she and Uni socialized, and I still can’t. But Uni liked her. She wanted to bring her honor back, by helping her escape the fate she’d found herself in. Uni was like that. She taught Lee’tha to be respectable. To act with grace, as many females do, but after Uni… she went back to her old ways.”

“I will watch El while they are together. I swear no harm will come to her.”

“It better not.” Ver’On went to the sealed door at the back of the main chamber. He put his hand to its surface.

“What is in there?” Sol asked quietly, knowing the room itself was of great importance. Ver’On said nothing, he just retracted his hand, patted Sol’s shoulder, and retired to bed. It was far too early to sleep, but he wanted to feel El’s body close to his, clothing between them or not.

Lee’tha’s heart wouldn’t stop pounding in her ears. She nearly walked right into one of the warriors who frequented her quarters. The male grabbed her and pulled her into a storage room. She fought him off, she just wasn’t ready, nor did she want to any longer. She scratched the male’s face, slicing his left eyelid in half, before running from the room. Before she got too far an arm shot out and caught her, pulling her into one of the meeting rooms. “I told you no!” she shouted, freeing herself from the grasp. She turned and saw Kire’Baa’s cold amber eyes staring back at her. “Elder, I’m sorry, I didn’t know it was you.” In the privacy of her quarters she could treat him as the letch he was, but in public places like this, she had to be respectful, you never know who might have been walking by, or if the security recordings were running.

“I told you to poison the ooman, NOT BECOME HER FRIEND!!!”

“You told me to get close! To do that, I have to play the part of her friend. And it worked. I have access. Let me work. Just leave my sisters alone!!!”

“Your sisters will forever be in the shadow you cast for them, if you don’t do what I tell you!!! Finish this!!!” He backhanded her across the table, before he left.

She was lucky he didn’t break her jaw. She took the pouch of powder from her pocket, squeezing it in her hands. “Forgive me sisters, please,” she cried, and tucked it away before leaving for her quarters. She had to get something cold on her cheek before the swelling started.
