Chapter 27 - Confessions

Oria met Jacks’ eyes harshly, he looked on the verge of tears, all weak and limp as if the life had been drained out of him and all that was left was a shell. Bootstrap was staring into the distance wishing he hadn’t made Jack so keen on the idea, “How could you?” Jack whispered, and she laughed.

“Jack…” He stood up.

“No, I don’t want to know. I need some time away to think.” Oria glared at him furiously.

“They were to stop me from feeling sick in the mornings. I didn’t do anything to the baby.” Jack froze several steps away from where she was stood, “I’m not that heartless.” He turned suddenly and ran back almost knocking her over as he clutched her to him, the tears getting free with the confusion of emotions. Slowly her arms wrapped about him just as tightly as he attempted to stop the free fall of highs and lows that were vibrating through him. He pulled back slightly and kissed every inch of her face he could reach.

“Thank you.” She smirked.

“You really think I’m that heartless.” He laughed slightly.

“Let’s just say you put on a good front. Oh, you have no idea how relieved I am.” Jack pressed her closer to himself.

“You’re really that bothered?” He nodded against her hair his eyes closed.

“Considering I only made my mind up about fifteen minutes ago I’m surprised myself. Guess the idea kinda grows on you ey? Just promise me one thing.” She leaned back slightly.

“What?” He grinned brushing a stray ringlet out of her face.

“For gods sake don’t change anything about you, and I mean anything.” Oria chuckled.

“I promise if you promise the same?” He nodded, “So we’ll keep it then?” Jack nodded again his eyes sliding closed with unprecedented relief.

“Please.” He whispered into her ear, he didn’t want anyone, not even William to hear the desperation in his voice.

:/

Oria folded her arms over her chest as Barbossa and his crew arrived at the newly repaired Pearl now adorning black sails at Oria’s suggestion to make it appear more menacing. Barbossa noted her glare and smirked as he strode past, she had swapped the red dress for her usual shirt and britches. Jack held his hand out to the man once he was on deck, “Welcome to the Black Pearl.” Barbossa grinned and shook the proffered hand while taking in the ship with a knowledgeable eye. Oria followed the final members of the new crew up and pulled the boarding plank up.

“Ready for cast off Captain.” Barbossa glanced back at her; she was still glaring at him.

“You have women working no board for you, with the crew?” Jack grinned.

“Oria’s special, the best sailor and fighter I know. You don’t want to get on the wrong side of her.” The crew chuckled as they glanced back at her; she looked nothing, stick thin and wiry. Barbossa grinned with them.

“Pardon us but she looks like nothing more than a play thing.” Oria was behind him in an instant a dagger to his throat.

“Then try playing with me if you dare.” He froze at the menace behind that tone, Jack frowned at her.

“Oria, leave him.” Slowly she stepped away glaring all the while as Jack pushed her behind him to ensure she didn’t go for him again, “Seems you’re in her bad books now. I suggest you watch your back mate.” Barbossa nodded rubbing his throat.

“She obeys only you?” Jack nodded.

“Answers to no one else.” Barbossa nodded thoughtfully his gaze resting on the girls furious eyes; there was a fire there that burned brightly. Personally he didn’t think her attractive, all skin and bone but she did present a challenge he was more than willing to accept. Jack watched the exchange of looks curiously before nodding and heading for the helm dragging Oria after him to ensure she didn’t launch another attack on Barbossa. Bootstrap began to shout out orders; he was still First Mate at Oria’s insistence instead of being replaced with Barbossa. Jack turned her to face him once they were separate from the crew.

“What the hell do you call that?” Oria folded her arms.

“Distinct dislike, Jack I don’t like him and I don’t trust him.” Jack laughed slightly.

“Well you didn’t make that clear at all; I thought you were his biggest fan.” Oria smiled and glanced to the side, he turned her chin back to face him.

“Trust me if you don’t trust him. I won’t let anything happen to you, me or the baby ever. I swear on my life.” She sighed and nodded.

“Alright, it’s probably nothing. Just don’t put us in the same room or you will find him dead.” Jack chuckled and kissed her gently before turning back to the helm before lust overtook him.

“Come on you worthless bags of bones, get this ship moving, we’ve got treasure to find.” The crew cheered and hurried to get the ship a sail, chivvied on by Bootstrap. Oria watched them hurry about the ship like worker ants and headed for the rigging to assist with the sails, a hand landed on her arm.

“The yard’s no place for a lady.” Barbossa grinned, Oria gritted her teeth.

“Good job I’m a pirate then isn’t it.” She brushed his arm away and headed up the rigging resisting the urge to kill him instantly by gritting her teeth and swearing at the opportune moment she would not restrain herself. A crew man obviously nervous, excited or just plain thick loosed a rope that was supposed to hold the sail in place just as it billowed down causing the wayward rope to smack about the air as it was whipped around by the sails flapping.

Oria ducked as it aimed for her head before it returned and smacked across her wrists she loosed her grip at the shock and felt herself falling. The few feet into the ocean were calm compared to the sudden plunge into the chill water; she swam back up to the surface swearing to kill whoever had loosed that rope. She watched as Jack stopped the ship several metres away looking blood thirsty as he headed down to the deck and riotous shouting ensued clearly audible from where she was swimming.

Reaching the side of the ship after a brief swim she clambered up the side shivering slightly as the water ran from her hair down her back. Hands grasped her and pulled her up sharply, she glanced between Bootstrap and Jack about to speak; Jack pushed her towards Bootstrap who dragged her off to the Captains’ cabin before she had chance to voice anything.

:/

Bootstrap entered the cabin when Oria finished changing into dry clothes; he sat next to her on the desk, “Can I ask you a question Oria?” She was still glaring at her hair as she wrung the sea water out of it.

“You just did.” He smiled.

“Then can I ask you another and don’t say I just did.” She laughed and twisted her hair sharply watching the drops fall from it, he took her silence as compliance, “Do you love him?” Oria’s head shot up and her eyes met his sharply.

“What?” He began to repeat when Jack burst in and ran his hands everywhere over her slight frame sure there would be some lasting damage, “Jack I only fell in the sea it’s not a killing action.” He scowled at her.

“You had me worried, I didn’t see you fall, it wasn’t till that lad shouted man overboard that I realised it was you.” Bootstrap headed out of the door quickly to keep the crew behaving while the Captain was absent.

“I’m fine, like I said…” Jack waved his hands.

“I know stupid of me to think anything could happen, you’re more likely to make the water run for cover.” He grinned and ran a finger along her jaw, truth be told he had practically had a fit at the implication that she was lost. Oria grasped his hand and pulled it away he glanced back realising the door was open and Barbossa was stood looking at the interaction with curiosity.

“Crew man this is the Captains’ quarters get back to your duties.” Barbossa nodded smartly.

“Right you are Captain just came to check the little miss was alright.” Jack watched him leave and locked the door, before turning back to Oria.

“I’ve got to return to the deck maintain my authority till they recognise it unfalteringly.” Oria stood up and followed him to the door, “No, I want you to stay here.”

“Jack, you said you didn’t want me to change. To not change I’m going back out on the deck whether you like it or not.” He glared at her till her hand wrapped around his on the handle pointedly, he sighed and nodded.

“Alright but just be careful.” She grinned.

“I’ll be my usual danger loving self if you don’t mind.” Jack opened the door and they walked out together onto the deck, before changing directions, Oria heading to a barrel where Bootstrap was sat mending a sail and Jack to the helm.

:/

As night began to fall Bootstrap headed up to the helm where Jack was stood, and waited patiently till the crew man of the night shift came to replace him. Jack turned with a grin, “What is it mate?” Bootstrap dragged him slightly away from the minimal crew presence and watched him silently for a few seconds.

“I want to know, do you love Oria?” Jack met his gaze slowly before letting it drift past him to the ocean. He thought about this hard; he hadn’t before, just accepting that they had drifted together like friends did. Bootstrap watched him look for an answer. Jack frowned as he looked deeper into his heart and examined the evidence there before looking back up at Bootstrap.

“Yes. With all my heart.”
