Rivers Run Deep

Chapter 29

Lee’tha quickly entered her quarters. Too many males were looking at her. They’d never seen her in a common simple dress before, she’d always been in something more befitting her hobby, or nothing at all. She had hoped by now that they would have gotten used to seeing her this way, but all the glances and growls she’d receive walking the halls, made her nervous. Secure in her quarters, she pulled out the pouch Kire’Baa had given her, and poured the contents down the waste disposal. After flushing several times, she returned the pouch to her pocket, and curled up on her bed.

It wasn’t long before someone was banging on her door. Lee’tha didn’t want any company, she didn’t want anyone to be near her. “Go away,” she called, pulling the pillow down over her ears. But the knocking turned to soft beeps, as a code was input into the controls, and the door slid open. Lee’tha sprang from her bed, to face her intruder. “KIRE’BAA! What are you doing!!?”

“I told you to kill her!!!” he growled, locking the door behind him.

“The pouch is empty!” she cried, tossing the empty cloth at his feet. “If she dies she dies! I WILL HAVE NO MORE TO DO WITH IT!!”

Kire’Baa took the pouch from the floor, looking it over slightly. He then tossed it aside like it was nothing. “THEN WHY IS SHE STILL BREATHING!!!?” he growled louder, belting the girl across the room.

Lee’tha grabbed the end of the sofa as she met it, the left side of her face paining her. She put her hand to her check, to find her lower mandible was broken. Tears streamed down her face. “I did what you demanded!” she cried, as he hit her once more.

“YOU AND YOUR SISTERS WILL NOT BE RID OF ME UNTIL SHE BREATHES HER LAST!!!” The pain was horrific, Kire’Baa had ripped into her body like a jagged knife. Not bothering to even attempt to arouse her.

She knew, she’d never be free of him, she only hoped her sisters would be safe. She had a feeling, this time, she would not survive.

She lay in Ver’On’s embrace, safe, and warm. She couldn’t believe how his hands made her feel, and all he did was message her back, right from the small dips at the base of her spine, right up to the base of her skull. She was in heaven. But somehow, in the back of her mind, she could feel something was wrong. She just couldn’t put her finger on it. Had she forgotten the medicine? No, Ver’On had given her the second shot. Was she reacting to it? God she hoped not!

She turned in his embrace, and he pulled her closer, purring even more into her neck. Oh that felt good. She laughed gently at the sensations the feeling sent through her, and pulled his arms closer to her. But still, something wasn’t right.

She sat up a bit, to look around. Was there something in the room that was off? “What is wrong My’El?” Ver’On asked, gently licking his tongue across the back of her neck. She tasted sweet to him, and he wanted more.

“I’m not sure,” she said gently, looking around further. She had his attention now. She was upset, he could feel the change in her muscles, sense the change in her scent.

“Are you alright?” he asked, sitting up with her, tapping his mandibles across her head.

“I’m fine, I think. I just feel…odd.”

Ver’On was taken aback. How could one feel odd? Usually you said that some one was odd or something of the like, never that yourself was odd. “What do you mean?”

“I don’t know. I feel…like there’s something wrong.” She looked around the room, listening as best she could. “Where’s Sol?”

“He’s in the sparing halls. Why?”

“Can we go there?” Ver’On moved to face her. She’d never asked to go to the sparing halls before.

“Do you wish to watch him spare?” She didn’t say anything, she just got up, and straightened her dress. “I thought you only wanted to watch me spar.”

“Ver’On, it’s not like that. I feel like there’s something wrong. But I don’t know what it is. Please. I’d feel a lot better if I were around you both.”

“You do not feel safe enough with me?”

“Its not that Ver’On, please…I can’t explain it. I just feel…like something horrible is going to happen, and I’d feel a lot better if I were with you both. Please Ver’On. Let’s just go there.”

Ver’On rose from the bed, pulling El with him, smoothing her hair over her back. “As you wish my mate, as you wish.”

He guided her through the halls of the ship, telling her of the significance of the wooden trim in the halls, and the metal only being on the outside of the ship’s construction. Greater stability, and lighter in weight, so that the ship could easily go in and out of the atmosphere of planets on less fuel. The words he spoke to her seemed to help ease her worry, though it had not totally left her. Ver’On led her into the sparing room, and secured a pair of seats for them at the floor level.

They had arrived in time to see Sol take to the mat. He was sparing with a young male, also newly blooded. They trained together when Ver’On was with El, and she wondered why he never spoke of how his training was going. The first blow was hard, and knocked Sol off his feet. He grunted in admiration to the male, saying it was a good move, one he was not familiar with. He swung out his staff, to force him back, and got to his feet.

Ver’On crossed his arms over his chest, watching their Kadji fight. He was getting better. His strength in holding his staff had increased, and his reach was stronger, more precise. But when he looked down to where El sat, she was not watching Sol at all, she was focused on the floor not far from her feet. Curious he knelt to her, and put his hand on her shoulder. There were tears in her eyes, one strayed down her cheek, and he wiped it away, gaining her attention. He grunted in question, he’d never seen her like this, and he could tell she was afraid. Something was wrong, something they couldn’t figure out.

One of the males behind them began laughing. “You don’t say!?” he asked excitedly of the male that had greeted him. “How loud?”

“Loud enough you could hear her down the hall. I tell you, Lee’tha is a good roll around. She sure knows how to handle a male.”

“I hope she has enough left for me.”

El turned her attention to Ver’On, her focus returning to her. “Where is Lee’tha’s quarters?” she asked quietly.

Ver’On stood to see Sol had been victorious over his match, and was striding towards them. “We’re leaving!” Ver’On stated, and held El close as they left.

“What is wrong Ver’On?” Sol asked, handing his practice staff to one of the hunters near the door.

“I don’t know. But we need to find Lee’tha.”

“El? Did you like the match? I used one of your strike moves from your battle with the other oomans. I studied it well from – ”

“Not now Sol, please!” she cried, clutching her hand to her head. “God my head is killing me.”

“Sol, take her back – ”

“NO! I’m going with you! Just find Lee’tha!”

Sol didn’t know what to say, he’d never heard El’s voice so cold, and sad. He wondered if she and Ver’On had an argument, but that would not account for her sudden head ache. Sol lead the way through the corridors, clearing a path for Ver’On and El, asking once in a while where Lee’tha’s quarters were.

After several males shaking their heads, one finally answered. “Just follow the screaming. She’s mating now. She must be with a male who’s in must.” Sol listened but could hear nothing. The male chuckled. “They must be finished, down this hall, third on the right.” Sol thanked him and led the way once more.

The door was more a storage room access than to residential quarters, and it was locked. Sol banged on the door, when there was no sound form the chime inside. “Someone’s in there,” he said. “I can hear them.”

El stepped up to the door, gently knocking. Even though the pain in her head was great, she called out through the door. “Lee’tha?”

“Go away,” came the girl’s muffled cry.

El stood back from the door. “Open it,” she told Ver’On.

“El, if she does not wish to…”

“OPEN IT!!!” she screeched, she even kicked the door herself.

Ver’On pulled her back from the door. Unlike the doors of her world, where they swung open and closed on hinges, the doors of the ship slid back into pockets in the wall, to maximize the space in each room, and to prevent someone from knocking the door in just as she had tried. He motioned for Sol to get to work on the panel to manually release the lock, then together they pulled to door open. The smell in the room was strong, and Sol turned to Ver’On, a single word escaping his mouth without intention. “Blood.”

El helped the pair push the door further into the wall, and slipped in through the opening made big enough for her. “Lee’tha?” There was a gentle glow of light all over the room, but not enough to see by. She turned to the wall looking for the light switch, Sol found it and turned it on. The room was covered in a yellow florescent substance, there was over turned furniture, and ripped clothing everywhere. “LEE’THA!!” Sol didn’t even see her, she was covered in the blankets form her stripped bed. Ver’On was searching the room, as El gently turned the female to her, brushing her hair and fine dreadlocks from her face, careful not to disturb her obviously broken mandibles. She then realized the florescent substance was blood. She’d forgotten what their blood looked like.

“Lee’tha? Look at me.” The female did nothing. Ver’On joined her, pulling a clean sheet off the shelf and helped El wrap the female in it. “Sol, Get Ter’Oth, NOW!” She had not even noticed that Sol had already left to do just that.

Ver’On carefully wrapped Lee’tha’s legs, assuring El that they were not broken, just badly bruised. Lee’tha’s arms and ribs however, were not so fortunate. “Lee’tha,” Ver’On called to her, surprisingly gentle. “Who did this to you?” She didn’t answer. “Lee’tha, who did this,” he repeated, a little more sternly.

She shifted her head in his hands, the pain of her broken bones against his firm hold brought her to look at him, he hadn’t meant to hurt her, but if that’s what it took to have her wake, he would do it. “He’ll go after my sisters,” she whispered, tears streaming from her eyes. “Please Ver’On. I know you think me less than dirt…but my sisters…they are young…untouched. If he takes ritual from them…they will end up…like me. Please. Protect them. I can’t…anymore...” She closed her eyes, and El, tried to hold her close.

Ver’On looked around the room, there was far too much blood. Her wounds were extensive. If she lived, it would be a miracle. Sol, pulled Ver’On out of the way, as Ter’Oth came to Lee’tha’s side. Sol then pulled El away, so that Ter’Oth could lift her from the floor and take her away. Was this the sensation of something wrong that she had? Why? Why Lee’tha? Why now? What was happening to her?

Ver’On grabbed El as she crumpled to the floor, her skin had lost all color, and she’d broken out in a sheet of cold sweat. Ver’On gathered her in his arms and followed Ter’Oth to the medical bay.

“El is fine,” the healer repeated, as the two males refused to let him be. “She had a reaction to the medicine. I told her to stay in bed, just in case, but you two drag her all over the ship. I’m surprised she didn’t vomit up her supper from three days ago.”

“What of Lee’tha?” Sol asked, finally changing the subject. “Will she live?”

“That…I do not know. I’ve done all I can. Whoever did that to her gave her a huge dose of hurved, I’m surprised she lived long at all.”

As the healer returned to Lee’tha’s bedside, to examine the monitors for the tenth time, Sol returned his attention to El and Ver’On, as his mentor purred deeply into her neck. El had not woken from her sleep for some time now, and that worried them both. Sol sat at the foot of her bed, stroking her exposed leg. Ver’On looked up, and for a moment their eyes met, both saying the same thing. They were scared for her. “Sol,” Ver”on shot his attention back to El, as she whispered the young hunter’s name. “Get…Ter’Oth…” Sol left at once.

“My’El,” Ver’On eased. “I’m here. Please, fight this, whatever it is. Draw your strength from me if you must, but fight!”

“Ver’On,” Ter’Oth moved the saddened hunter from his post as he examined El. He wasn’t quite sure what to look for, he’d never treated an ooman. “El,” he said sternly, hoping it would bring her around. “El, do you hear me?”

“Ter’Oth?”

“Yes. It’s me.”

“Some…one hurt…Lee’tha…help her. Please?” Ter’Oth gave a gentle chuckle.

“I will. Rest now. You will see your friend again.”

“Ver’On?”

“Yes, my mate?”

“I’m cold.”

Ter’Oth drew the thicker curtains around the bed, as the two males shed their bulky armor, leaving nothing but their cloth bottoms on, then slid beneath the covers with her to keep her warm. He then returned to sit with Lee’tha. Her wounds were extensive. Besides the massive swelling, bruising, and vaginal tearing, there were a number of broken ribs, and internal bleeding. Both her arms were broken, her left was broken across both bones below her elbow, and her right was broken above the elbow, and one bone broken below her elbow. She put up quite a fight though. Her hands were bruised, and some of her claw tips missing. She fought her attacker. He would have to look for the unworthy male should he try to seek medical attention. He would deal with the brute, himself.

It was three days before Lee’tha opened her eyes again, in all that time, Ter’Oth never left her alone. If he had to go somewhere, he made sure that either his assistant, or El was left to watch her, and he was never gone for long.

Ver’On had tried many times to get El to talk about what had happened. Why it was that she desperately felt the need to find Lee’tha, even before they overheard the hunters in the sparing hall. She had told him that it was the need to seek out someone that drove her from their quarters, but she couldn’t figure out why. Then when the hunters mentioned Lee’tha, all the pieces fell into place. It was Lee’tha she needed to find. She’d told him she’d no idea why she had to find her, she couldn’t explain how she felt, all she knew was that she never wanted to feel it again.

At Ver’On’s insistence, Ter’Oth had stopped giving El the inoculations, at least for a while. They would be extra vigilant for any indications of illness, to make sure they got medicine to help her in time. But no such ailments came, for which Sol and Ver’On were grateful. El insisted that they let her stay in the medical bay, to sit with Lee’tha as she recovered. Ver’On had no objections.

During that time, Ver’On took Sol back to Lee’tha’s quarters. He would find out who hurt the female, common to male’s beds or not, no one deserved to be treated like that. Ver’On decided to teach Sol the ways of law, as well as the hunt. Like his mentor taught him, he showed Sol what to look for in the investigation, starting with the door. “Tell me what you see,” Ver’On said, wondering just how well Sol’s powers of observation were.

Sol bent to the floor, carefully going over the panel. “Well, there are no indications of tampering, other than mine. So whoever got in here, either used a code, or was let in.”

“Assuming she did not let him in?”

“Then the code would either be her personal lock code, or an override.”

“Very good. Obvious overrides would be?”

“Security, medical, emergency such as structural engineers, or fire suppression crews.”

“No medical alerts, until Lee’tha’s, had been reported. These quarters are on the inside of the ship, so no real need for structural repairs or inspections would be needed. There weren’t any fires, and security doesn’t consider aiding Lee’tha to be a priority.”

“Still,” Sol replied, “their codes could have been used. Just because there wasn’t an emergency, didn’t mean they couldn’t get in by using the codes.”

“You are missing something.”

“Oh?” Sol thought for a moment, but nothing came to him. “Teach me sir, I’m not familiar with what you say I’m missing.”

“You’ve done well so far, don’t think yourself less. Here is what you are missing. Should a security unlock code be used, the chief of security would be alerted, and several Yautja would have been dispatched.”

“And sense the corridor was quiet, that code could not have been used.”

“Correct. If an engineering code have been used, the claxon would have sounded, alerting all on this deck, the one above, and below, of possible structural integrity loss.”

“And sense there was no claxon that code was not used either, of course. If a fire code had been used?”

“Then the fire alarms would be going off, and the deck would have been evacuated.”

“There would have been no one in the halls when we arrived. But there were, so no fire code was used. And sense Ter’Oth was still in the medical bay when I found him, they could not have used a medical code, or he would have been sent for.”

“Exactly.”

“A lesson I will not forget my mentor. Thank you.”

“There still is one thing.”

“Yes, if those codes had not been used, then what code was it? Her own, that someone knew?”

“Possibly. It is the only explanation.” Ver’On looked over the door itself. Aside from the scratches left by he and Sol, there weren’t any significant scratches to indicate the door had been forced. There were small scuffs, possibly from males giving Lee’tha a signal as to who was at her door, so she could open it in safety. Other than that, there was nothing. “Let us move inside. Go no further than the door.” Sol nodded.

The room had not been touched. No one really wanted to. Not even Lee’tha’s sisters, when they’d learned what had happened. The two females were safe, staying in the company of a trusted friend of Ter’Oth’s, not even Ver’On and Sol knew who. “Begin with what you smell,” Ver’On began. “Push the scent of blood aside. I know it has been a few days, but still there are scents here. From what you smell, and what you see, try to determine, where the violence began, and what may have happened.”

Sol looked around. All he could smell was blood, and made mention. Ver’On urged him to try harder. “There,” he stated at last, “The attack began here,” he pointed to a tear in the carpeting. “Caused possibly by her toe claws. Someone hit her, very hard.” He sniffed the air again. “Its faint, a male; of course, but I don’t recognize the scent. She had to have landed against the seat.” He noticed her clothing around the room. The simple dress that El had made for Lee’tha, torn to shreds and scattered, and something else. “Ver’On, what is that?”

Ver’On followed where he pointed. It was a small dark cloth, pressed beneath the remains of the glass topped table. There was blood over the glass, so whatever it was, it was untainted by the violence that erupted in the room.

Ver’On made Sol follow him, placing his feet where he did to minimize the damage they would do. “It looks like a pouch,” said Sol, as they looked at it through the glass.

“It is, but what is that powder?”

“What powder? Where?”

“On the carpet at the top of the pouch. It must have come out when the glass slammed down on it. There may be more inside it. Help me get this off, we’ll take it to Ter’Oth, he can figure out what it is.” Sol offered an empty case he obtained that day, meant to store some of his weapon making tools. Not yet filled it would make an ideal closed compartment to carry the item. He secured it back to his belt.

“Ver’On, what is that?” he asked, pointing to a dark smear on the floor.

Ver’On looked. “It is the color a male’s seed takes, when exposed to blood and air for a length of time,” Ver’On replied, taking a piece of cloth and pulling some of it off the floor.

Sol scrunched up his face in disgust. “You touch that!” he scoffed, feeling his stomach churn.

“Have you not mated before?” Ver’ON asked. Sol shook his head no. Ver’On laughed. “So you’re as virgin as she. Your first mating will come, and you will understand. This,” and he held up the cloth, “is what all females want. It is what we give them for our young to be created. And the act of implanting it is most enjoyable.”

Sol looked around the room. “Apparently not for Lee’tha,” he sighed. “If this is all so important, what is it doing on the floor?”

“Not all of it stays in the female, young blood.” Ver’On chuckled.

Sol looked around him, then turned back to Ver’On. “Then Lee’tha will be pregnant!!”

“No. Remember what Ter’Oth said. Someone gave her a massive dose of hurved.”

“What is that?”

“It is a drug, commonly given by healers to females who have been assaulted, and forced to mate. Often when a male is in an advanced state of must, and cannot find a mate properly. It is rare, but it happens. They have the option of bearing the offspring, if they become pregnant, or taking the drug to prevent it all together. It is quite potent, often poisonous if taken too often, or in large doses. The effects of a properly administered dose could last an entire heat cycle for the female. Those who take it often, sometimes can never conceive, once they stop.”

“Why would she have it? Never mind, forget I asked.”

“No, you are right. The drug is regulated by the medical staff. She would not have open access to it. Someone had to have obtained it, then given it to her.”

“Then we are looking for someone in the medical field.”

“Or someone who has access. Come. We’ll continue our observations, then return to Ter’Oth. This room should be cleaned, and soon.”

“Isn’t it a storage room?”

“It is supposed to be a resting room, with a facility. But it appears Lee’tha has secured it for her quarters. Notice there are no walls between the living space and the bed, only the facility room is closed off.” Sol nodded.

Ter’Oth looked up from the screen after the analysis was completed on the powder found in the pouch. “It is hurved,” he stated. “Though I’ve never seen it in a powder form before. Where did you find this?”

“Under a glass table in Lee’tha’s quarters,” Ver’On stated. “Where would she have gotten it?”

“I’ve no idea. I only stock the liquid hurved. As I said, I’ve never seen it in powder before.”

“Is there any way that you can track down who gave it to her?” Sol asked.

“No. The DNA on the pouch is conclusive, it was a male; the same male who’s seed you brought in to test. But without a database to compare it to, I couldn’t begin to tell you.”

“What about in your records?” Sol asked. “I know that the healer on my father’s ship, keeps a DNA record of all on board, even visitors. It is for the safety of the females, should one turn up pregnant after a long visit from allies, or others. This way, they know who the child’s father is.”

“I should start doing that. But I already checked. No one in my records, matches this sample.”

“Then he’s not been to see you? Correct?”

“Or he has gone to see one of the other healers on another deck. We do not share records.”

“There is another difference,” Sol stated. “There is no separation of healers to the different levels in my clan. There is one medical bay, several healers, and all are treated equal. It is the one time, other than gathering, that all rank and position are put aside.”

“Your Elders must be younger than those on this ship. Here they follow the old ways.”

“I know. Father and Grand father have been helping them adjust to new ways of thinking. They had much resistance at first, but the change of elders over the years has helped the greater good of the clan. Things have been better ever since.”

“Who is your Healer?” Ter’Oth asked, gaining the idea of sending him a message to ask for ideas of how to approach the elders on this ship to accomplish the same task, as they had done with Sol’s.

“Kal’Bay of Row'ha,” Sol replied with pride.

“I’ve heard of him,” Ver’On stated, surprised. “A fine warrior, they say he needs no weapons to fight.”

“It is true,” Sol offered. “Though I’ve not seen him fight personally, his reputation is well known to my clan, and many others. Most often because they saw him battle, or so I’ve heard.”

“You come from a fine clan Sol,” Ver’On stated with pride, shaking the young warrior’s shoulder. “I am pleased that you are Kadji to my mate and I.”

“Ter’Oth!” The three males turned to see El, making her way to the door to the lab, not taking her eyes off the sleeping area where Lee’tha lay. “Lee’tha’s waking up.”

The three left the room quickly. Perhaps now they could get the answers they so desperately needed.
