Chapter 28 - Shot

For three days they had been at sea with the new crew and Jacks’ behaviour had been increasingly strange towards her as if something had changed. Oria folded her arms over her chest as Barbossa stepped into the Captains’ cabin arrogantly, “What do you want? Jack’s at the helm.” He nodded.

“I know, I came to talk to you young Miss.” His eyes met hers harshly, “We seem to have stepped off on the wrong foot, you and me. I’ve come to make amends and friendship.” He held his hand out, Oria kept her own wrapped about her.

“I don’t like you and I don’t trust you. Leave before I do something I doubt I’ll regret.” Barbossa chuckled.

“Jack always said you had spirit, didn’t realise how much though.” Oria glared at him as he stepped closer threateningly, she knew they had been talking, “What would you do if something happened to dear ol’ Jack? Hmm?” She drew her cutlass swiftly.

“I’m not one to be tampered with ‘friend’ I suggest you leave. I won’t ask you again.” Barbossa nodded, he had got what he came for, Oria would not diverge from Jack, not without… persuasion. He turned away and shut the door after him, he had work to do. Oria released a breath she had not realised she had been holding and sheathed the cutlass, one hand resting on her stomach before heading up deck to tell Jack. He hadn’t listened before, perhaps now he would, she stepped out onto deck and froze, the whole crew was gathered looking up at the helm. Oria glanced up, there was Jack facing Barbossa, nothing more than harmless banter till Jack spoke.

“Alright, tonight we all sit down and I’ll tell everyone the location of the Isle De Muerta. Seems fair enough to me, equal shares and all.” Oria jogged up the stairs furious.

“What are you doing?” Jack snatched his hand back quickly as if he had been burned by Barbossas’ grip and glanced at Oria unsurely, but the deal had been struck. She shook her head.

“Ah, Oria. Erm… well, it does seem only fair. They are the crew after all it’s not like they’d do anything…” He noticed her glare at Barbossa and trailed off.

“Miss Oria, we were only conducting a small exchange of knowledge and equality, nothing more.” Oria glared at him as he walked down the steps to join the crew.

“I’m watching you, one false move ‘mate’ and you’re mine.” Barbossa smiled and nodded.

“As you wish.” She watched him till he disappeared down to the hold with the majority of the crew before turning her wrath on Jack, he winced.

“Look love…” She smacked his chest with her palm.

“I told you I didn’t trust him Jack, what are you doing dealing with him?” Jack shook his head.

“He’s my First Mate; I haven’t got a choice really.” Oria gritted her teeth and ran her fingers through her hair, she hadn’t approved of the change over from Bootstrap to Barbossa when Jack had first suggested it. He’d gone against her deeming it best just like the foolish child he was.

“Jack…” She sighed, “I’m not wrong about these things. He will betray you. I’ve been around too many pirates for too long to not know what one is like. He’s too ambitious Jack, too… I don’t know what, but it is not good.” Jack stepped forwards and ran his hands down her arms soothingly.

“Look, he’s not going to do anything if he thinks I favour him, think of the baby.” She glared at him.

“You say that to me one more time and I swear…” Jack grinned.

“You’ll do what? Kiss me to death, shag me to death, if that’s the case then let’s do it now!” She brushed him off with a small laugh; he smiled fondly, “I won’t let anything happen to you or the kid. You know that if it was up to me you’d be locked up somewhere safe all day every day. Nothing will happen to you.” He kissed her on the forehead and dragged her close; she slipped her arms about his waist and rested her head on his shoulder.

Jack smiled; he never felt more content than in these moments, of silence and peace, nothing more than the swift lilting sea breeze and the warmth of bodies that worshipped each other. He pulled away slightly, “I have something for you as well.” She frowned at him as he delved in a pocket pulling a face as he dug deep into one pocket before pulling something out hidden in his closed palm he grinned triumphantly, “Had it made ‘specially in Tortuga before we left.” Oria watched as he opened his palm slowly, a small silver chain from which was dangling a small silver charm. She picked it up and studied it, three slivers of silver the outer two making a circle about a smaller third. Jack pointed to the three slivers.

“One’s me, the other’s you and the one in the middle is the kid. Let me put it on?” Oria smiled slightly and turned around as he slipped the thin chain about her throat and fastened it neatly before gracing the faintest kiss on her neck. He couldn’t help himself, ever since he had admitted his love to Bootstrap it was all he could ever think about.

:/

Oria watched from a distance with William as Jack sat down with the rest of the crew. Her fingers running over the silver charm, William glanced at her nervously, “How are you feeling?” Her gaze didn’t meet his but her hand flitted to her stomach briefly, as if checking it was still there.

“Better than this morning, but that’s how you said these things worked.” Her eyes met his, he smiled comfortingly.

“That’s what happened with my wife Heather, yes. Most joyous days of me life before young Will was born. Anticipation more than anything.” Oria looked away, “It won’t change you, you’re too strong a character to be changed by anything. It’ll just be a bit of adapting, that’s all.” She nodded.

“I know, that’s what you told Jack as well, but still. I don’t want to end up like my mother or sister. Nothing more than a breeding machine.” William laughed quietly causing her to glance at him in surprise.

“I don’t think you’ve been paying attention to Jack very much. He wants you the way you are, I doubt he would have pushed for a kid if it hadn’t happened spontaneously. He won’t change his attitude towards you. Trust me on that.” They glanced towards the lantern lit area where the crew was gathered, a deathly silence had ensued as Jack began to speak about the co-ordinates.

“William, what’s Barbossa planning?” No answer came and she glanced over her shoulder to where he was stood, only to find he had joined the rest of the crew as silently as a wraith. She watched quietly as the crew glanced at each other, Jack had given them the co-ordinates and they were clearly elated by it. Slowly they began to filter away to their hammocks, the Black Pearl anchored for the night. Jack rose last and smiled as he met Oria’s eyes, she returned it slightly.

“See nothing happened. Nothing is going to happen.” He glanced down at her hips, four pistols and two cutlasses rested on her belt, “And if something did it looks like you’ve got the cavalry and artillery ready for back up. Come on, best get some rest, only two days away now, might see if we get a better pace out of those sails tomorrow.” He wrapped an arm about her shoulders and clamped her close to his side as they headed for the cabin her fingers still worrying the charm.

:/

Jack glanced down at Oria on the deck; she was coiling a snapped piece of rope, looking suspiciously at the ends as if they were snake heads about to bite. He chuckled, the sun was beating down warmly, it was going to be a long hot day if the Caribbean sun had anything to do with it, Jack patted his pocket and frowned, “Oria, where’s my spy glass?” She glanced up at him.

“Desk?” He contemplated this, he remembered doing something with it last night, he grinned as he remembered.

“Top drawer, mind going to crows nest for a bit?” Oria glared at him, he knew she hated it but he wanted to slow down what she was doing without her realising. It was an extreme work load when she was fit and healthy but he wasn’t happy about it when she was carrying his kid, not only did it risk the babes’ health but no one knew the consequences it would have on her. He watched as she disappeared, he could barely remember the days without her in the picture; he wasn’t quite sure what he would do if he lost her.

Jack shook his head; he didn’t want to think of that, not now, not now everything was finally falling into place for the both of them, finally a golden lined infinity was in sight. Barbossa glanced up as the door closed behind Oria, a crew man locked it quietly and he whistled for the rest of the crew. They all drew cutlasses and pistols and followed Barbossa, he stood to the right of the mast and placed his hands on his hips.

“Jack Sparrow.” Jack jumped form his minds wanderings and he frowned seeing the group gathered.

“What are you doing you lazy dogs, stop dallying and get this ship moving.” Those with pistols primed them and a distant rattling began to echo as Oria pushed against the door.

“Jack Sparrow, this is a mutiny. I’m taking command of this vessel as of well... now.” Jack glared down at them and stepped away from the helm.

“What are you talking about?” Two pairs of hands grabbed his arms and dragged him down the steps to stand in front of Barbossa, the taller man grinned.

“I believe that I am talking about throwing you off this ship Jack.” Jack stared in disbelief.

“I’m sorry, still not quite catching the gist.” Barbossa pulled himself up to his full height.

“See that little island there. You’re going to be governor of it for a very long time. You are a poor Captain.” A shot fired off and the cabin door flew open, Oria stepped out a smoking pistol in one hand and a ready one in the other, Barbossa drew his pistol and aimed straight at her. He growled threateningly, “You are too meddling for your own good wench.” Oria stepped forwards, her eyes wary, Jack shook his head.

“I told him before you came aboard that you weren’t trustworthy. I think I’ve just been proven right. Lower your pistol.” Barbossa chuckled and primed the hammer.

“I think not.” Oria clicked one of the two silver hammers into place.

“I have no qualms with killing you or anyone else who challenges his authority.” She glanced across at Bootstrap, he avoided her gaze, Barbossa chuckled and aimed at her stomach as she stepped forwards again.

“I will have no qualms shooting you, I know you can’t die. I know of your curse.” This time Jack looked uncomfortable, Oria glared at him.

“You really need to learn how to control that mouth of yours.” She clicked the second hammer into place and raised her chin as Barbossa chuckled and stepped forwards threateningly. Both were on edge, both ready to fire and be damned of the consequences. The pair of guns went off simultaneously, only one body fell to the floor with a thump the gun spinning away from their palm. The crew stood staring in shock and exchanging nervous looks, that was not expected at all they stared at the fallen frame in disbelief…
