CHAPTER 03

Ropes. Blood. Screams. Hate. Murdered innocence. Pain. Tears. Silence.

Jack Sparrow awoke in a frenzy, nearly falling off the bed and sprawling onto the floor. He flung his arms wildly in defense and gasped for air.

"It can't be true...no...it just...I," he curled into himself with his hands clenching his head, exuding insanity. After a moment of collecting himself, he peered up slowly as if afraid something would ambush him, and something did. The savage and chaotic state of the room affirmed his greatest fear, his greatest regret. He couldn't take anymore.

"Nono nno no..." he shook his head, trying to wipe out the nightmare replaying over and over in his mind. His whole body trembled in self-disgust, disbelief, and terror as he kept backing away from Will's bruised and bloody body until he stumbled unruly onto the hard wooden floor. His breathing ironically became more shaland and rapid as he stared at the boy's chest, rising and falling steadily and peacefully.

"NO!!" He screamed, trying to drive the demons out of his being, and curled up with his arms pulling his knees tightly against his chest. Will, startled by Jack's outbreak, awoke. But the moment he sat up, he felt a great burning and cutting pain that shot through his body, and immediately turned onto his side, groaning weakly in pain.

The older man wanted to run to the boy's side, but he was too afraid. He couldn't face the young man, and what he did to him. The boy couldn't possibly forgive him. He couldn't even imagine forgiving himself.

It was the demon. Bloody beast. Bloody insanity. Bloody rage! Bloody...too late. Jack sighed inside. It was all ov...

Just then the boy began to breathe erratically. He gasped and wheezed and shuddered all at the same time. Even from the far corner of the room, Jack could see small beads of sweat coating Will's tanned and rather muscular back. Will's whole body flexed, in its attempt to control itself, however, to no avail.

"I can't...br...br...breathe" Will managed to squeeze out in between shallow intakes of oxygen, "room...spin...ning...help...me." With his last breath escaping from his quivering lips, he whispered, "Jack..." His eyes rolled back, eyelids dropped, and his body went limp.

"Oh god...Will!" The urgency of the situation gave Jack the courage he needed, and he half-crawled, half-dragged himself to Will's side where the young man had one arm dangling off the side of the bed. With trembling hands, Jack took Will's hands in his and kissed it in desperation. "My god...I'm so sorry, Will. I'm so sorry...don't die on me, love. Please...ye all I got..." Jack sobbed hard, but Will remained immobile. With hell's frustration, the captain picked up a small glass vase, half filled with water, and threw it furiously against the wall across the room, letting it shatter into a million piercing pieces. Tears continued to flow down his cheeks and gather at the corners of his mouth and base of his neck.

"God...where are ye?!" Jack let go of the boy's limp hand and nonsensically screamed at the ceiling. "Ye...ye are punishing me," the older man stated more for himself than anyone, and for a moment his anger resided to guilt and helplessness. Yet within seconds of contemplation, he looked up again and with more fury than before, continued, "but not with this boy's life. How could ye? He's an innocent boy...a victim. A victim of ME...how could ye have no mercy?" He broke into tears once more. His tears filled with hate for himself -- his irrationality, his savageness, and his incompetence.

Jack glanced sadly at Will's body for a moment and looked up once again with swollen eyes. "I'll make ye a promise..." he inhaled and swallowed the lump in his throat, "I'll let him go. I'll set him free...free from me. If ye will only let him live." He closed his eyes, "My heart for his life."

Silence.

The older man reached over and glided his fingers down the boy's dangling arm. Nothing. He sighed bitterly, holding back more tears and stood up. He picked Will's body up and held it tight, burying his face in the crook of the boy's neck -- taking in his sweet scent. He then gently placed his limp body in the center of the bed and pulled the covers over him.

Will's face was expressionless. His body was motionless.

Jack couldn't stand anymore. He didn't know what to do. Should he call for a doctor and risk being let down so brutally once again? Is it too late? Is there still hope? He finished dressing, silently. He felt so empty. His anger was spent and his tears were no more.

When he reached to open the door of his quarters, a feeble voice called out, "Jack..."

Jack spung around and sprinted back to Will's side. My god, he was breathing...shallow, but breathing, nonetheless.

"Don't leave me..." Will whispered softly with his eyes tightly closed.

"I'm so sorry, Will. I'm so sorry...I'm so sorry," Jack's eyes started to leak fresh tears, "I'll never leave you...I'll never leave you..."

Will offered no reply but the subtlest smile of content. His hands fell limp again, but this time, warmth returned to his whole body. Jack knelt next to the bed and clutched Will's hand tightly. "I'll never..." He chanted again, but then stopped short as he suddenly remembered his solemn promise just moments ago.

He stood up slowly and backed away.

The longing. The desire. The pain. The injustice of it all. But a promise is a promise.

He looked up bravely and whispered, "pirate's honor." A single tear escaped and graced his cheekbone as he quietly walked out of the quarter, locking the doors behind him.
