Surrender
Jack waited until Will was surely asleep and he swung his tired feet over the side of the bed. Scanning the floor, he found every article of clothing. He stood and quickly went to dress, his thoughts consuming him.
‘I can’t do this… I can’t ruin his life…’
“I know you think that I shouldn't still love you
Or tell you that
But if I didn't say it
Well, I'd still have felt it
Where's the sense in that?”
He slipped the wrinkled pants on and tucked in his shirt. The scarf was fastened around his waste along with the belt containing his sword. As he picked up his vest Will stirred in his sleep, only to turn to his side, still asleep. The vest was put on along with his boots. His hat was placed carefully aside and Jack smiled at the memory of Wills careful attention to its care. But then his guilty thoughts continued.
‘He risked his life for Elizabeth. It isn’t right for me to come here and take him away from the life he deserves.’
With a quick hand, Jack wrote a short note, leaving it on the bedside table. Things he could never say to Will if he were looking into those eyes.
“I promise I'm not trying to make your life harder
Or return to where we were”
One last look at the sleeping boy and Jack left, walking out into the smithy and out the front door into the crowd of people. He had spent the night at the smithy, the crew would be there to pick him up tomorrow. He could purchase a room at the inn for tonight, perhaps buy a new bottle of rum to accompany him.
Carefully avoiding the soldiers all about, he entered the inn. The man sold him a room for six shillings. It was small and dark.
‘Forget the rum… Just sleep now.’
“But I will go down with this ship
And I won't put my hands up and surrender
There will be no white flag above my door
I'm in love and always will be”

Will woke to an empty bed. Jacks clothes were gone as well. He sat up, looking about. No trace of the pirate remained. Then a piece of paper caught his attention. Jack’s scratchy writing was difficult to read, but Will could read it.
“I know I left too much mess,
And destruction to come back again.
And I caused but nothing but trouble,
I understand if you can't talk to me again.
And if you live by the rules of It's over,
Then I'm sure that that makes sense…
And when we meet,
Which I'm sure we will.
All I was then,
Will be there still…
I'll let it pass,
And hold my tongue.
And you will think,
That I've moved on…”
The paper quickly crumbled in the blacksmiths strong hands. What in the hell was this suppose to mean? Is this why Jack had come back? To have him for a night and then to leave him? If that was the case, why would he have said he was in love?
Will leaped out of bed and quickly dressed. He didn’t know what he was going to do, but something had to be done. The street was crowded and Will couldn’t spot Jack if he were in it. It was in the early afternoon, surely Jack was at the pub.
As he entered, the smell of tobacco and strong liquor filled his nostrils. The only people there were the usual, old sea-going men. No Jack.
All night Will wandered the docks and the shore. Why would Jack go? Was it something he said? Was it something he… did?

Jack opened his eyes a little after dawn. The rosy morning light was spilling through the shutters and Jack felt like he hadn’t slept at all. The inn was empty as he walked through it and out the front door. The Black Pearl would be here soon.
The beach was empty except for a few sailors loading a near by ship. Jack sat down, scanning the horizon.
“Jack?”
An all too familiar voice found the pirate and he stood, facing away from the one person he had come back here to see in the first place.
“Go home son… There’s nothing for you here.”
Will stepped in front of him, eyes pink and swollen. Jack clenched his teeth and stood his ground.
‘I will go down with this ship
And I won't put my hands up and surrender
There will be no white flag above my door
I'm in love and always will be’
“Why?” Will choked out.
“Will-“
“Why?!” The boy took a step forward, “Why did you…?”
Jack looked down, he couldn’t see the boy cry. This wasn’t suppose to happen.
“Jack!-”
“Because I have nothing to give you!” The pirate shouted before he could think, “Because you have a whole life ahead of you filled with a beautiful woman and children and grandchildren! Because if I don’t go, you’ll spend the rest of your life running from everything good in your life William!”
Jacks voice cracked as he bit back his tears. Wills eyes were brimmed over with tears, his face was wet.
“You think that any of that matters? I’m not with Elizabeth Jack. She knew… She knew that what we felt for each other was gone.” Will took a deep breath, “I don’t give a damn about children or grandchildren! I love you! I…love…you… Your coming back here was the best damn thing that ever happened to me. And if you leave, you’ll be taking with you everything good I’ll ever have in my life!”
‘I will go down with this ship
And I won't put my hands up and surrender
There will be no white flag above my door
I'm in love and always will be’
“I love you Jack Sparrow… And you’re not getting on that boat without me.”
Jacks tears began to flow. He smiled and let out a small chuckle.
“Ship…”
Will stepped forward again and wrapped his arms around Jacks waist. The pirate closed his eyes tightly as the blacksmith kissed him. Wills lips were soft and salty.
When they broke the kiss, Jack looked out to sea. The Black Pearl was right on time…
