Sarena woke up to the sound of a gun being fired near her, followed by an inhuman scream.
She jumped up from the sofa and bolted into the room in which the gun-toting-maniac was currently residing.
She stood nervously in the doorway. Sands held a gun loosely in his hand, pointing towards a small hole in the wall at exactly head height.
She gazed at him wide eyed.
He had his head turned toward her. His bandaged eyes looking directly at her.
“You didn’t tell me you had cats.”
His tone was light. He didn’t seem angry or shocked or even in pain.
Sarena let out a relieved laugh.
“I’m sorry. But I’m sure she won’t bother you again, she’s not as partial to the half-naked-blind-man thing as I am.”
Sands felt himself grin at the description and at the apparent - although odd - compliment in her voice.
“I like cats.” He said simply, flicking the safety on and sliding the gun back onto the bedside table.
Sarena was shocked by that. And upon seeing Sands get comfortable once more, decided that she should probably go and get her poor kitty from wherever she was now hiding.
“Well, if I can find her after that scare, I’ll introduce you.” She called over her shoulder as she walked down the hall.
Sands could hear her murmuring, calling for the frightened feline.
He felt a little guilty at taking a shot at what he’d thought was someone in the room and consequently putting a hole in the wall.
He figured he should apologise; and not having to do it to her face had its perks. Maybe being blind wasn’t all bad. Although he felt uneasy talking to someone and not being able to gauge their reactions. Thankfully this girl seemed to react more with her voice than anything else.
Sands frowned.
Or was it possible that he was gaining perspective and an improved sense of being after losing his sight. Perhaps he was understanding people better now that he had to rely on them. Too early to be sure.
He heard Sarena cooing to the cat she’d obviously found and stifled his smile.
“Come now baby, the big scary gringo is going to say sorry for shooting at you.” She said in a childlike voice.
Sands felt her sit down on the bed next to him and suddenly a beautifully soft, warm fur ball was pressed into his hands and the surprisingly small cat was crouched on his stomach.
“Her name’s Cherry. I don’t know how old she is. She lived here before I did. She’s a dirty brown colour and her eyes are green. And she’s the nicest little kitty I’ve ever come across.” Sarena told Sands as he ran his long thin fingers languidly through her fur.
Cherry was purring contentedly and curled herself up into a ball, her eye lids getting lower and lower. Sands rubbed behind her ears gently and her eyes finally closed.
Sarena smiled at how adorable the pair looked.
“Would you mind if I took a photo of you?”
Sands was a little startled by this.
Why? Where? Wait….what?! He was sure he looked like the living dead right now and he was wearing his boxers after all.
And my how glad he was he’d decided to wear a pair this morning.
“Why?”
“You just look really cute like that. I take photos of everything” She added seeing that her explanation was fairly poor.
Sands frowned a little but shrugged.
“I don’t have to see it so…..go nuts.”
Sarena grinned and walked out of the room.
Sands heard her come back a moment later and listened to her clicking the settings on her camera.
“Do you have cats?” She asked suddenly, continuing to play with the camera.
“Grew up with them. Don’t really have a permanent residence to keep one of my own though.”
Sarena nodded distractedly, lifting the camera up and taking a seat at the end of the bed.
“How do I know you’re not taking photos of my crotch to sell on some Mexican porn site?” Sands asked with mock seriousness.
Sarena grinned behind the camera as she took his photo.
“Someone has a high opinion of themselves.”
Sands couldn’t help but smile. He listened to her moving about, taking more shots; he rested his head back against the pillows again, trailing his fingers in slow curved zigzags through Cherry’s fur.
Sarena laughed as Cherry turned around to look at Sands’ face.
“I think your making her horny.”
Sands’ lips twitched into a smile as he slid his hands under Cherry’s belly and lifted her up, hugging her next to his hollow cheek.
“I’m sorry baby, I’m saving myself for your owner’ He murmured into her fur.
Sarena grinned deviously at his comment and watched Cherry snuggle closer to his chest to better feel it rumble when he spoke.
Sarena had never been so jealous in her life.
