Watching

Jareth flew from tree to tree following Sarah and Toby home. He didn't need to follow so closely, he could find his way well enough. Many nights he had sat watching the window. He had watched her grow. Homework, her first date( what a night that was, but a well aimed fecal shot hit the boy on the head before he could try for a kiss), and all the other trials and tribulations young girls encounter on their way to womanhood. He watched them enter the house.

He sat in the tree in the front yard. Jareth looked over the long tables set up in the driveway and yard. Boxes and bags sat around them, various nic-nacs and appliances adorned the table tops. He spotted Sarah's table immediately, recognizing some of the things that he had seen in her room before.

He flew down and landed on the table. Walking among her things he noticed the small red book.
' How can she sell this?' he thought to himself. He picked up the book with his foot and flew away before he was noticed.

" I'm going outside to make sure everything is set up on my table," called Sarah to her stepmother.

"Ok. Hey, if you don't mind, would you finish setting up the T-O-Y-S?" Karen had spelled the word toys, if she hadn't, and Toby heard, it could have been the start of a beautiful argument.

" Gotcha."

Her father sat in a chair near the garage door, counting out change for a man who had just bought Sarah's box of story books.

" My little girl loves fairy tales," the man told her father, " we read one every night before bed."

" I know what you mean," replied her father, " when my daughter was little she wouldn't sleep without hearing at least one. She's all grown up now though, that's her over at the toy table."

The man turned to look and was struck by the simple beauty that was Sarah. He walked over to her carrying the box of books.

"Excuse me," he said. " but your father just pointed you out and I just want to let you know that your story books are going to a good home. My daughter will love them as much as you obviously have."

Sarah looked up from the box she was rooting around in, her breath caught as she looked up at the tall man before her. He stood a good six feet tall if not more, he had shocking green eyes, and short blonde hair. His face was clean shaven, and his hair was slightly messy. His shirt hugged his form, showing off a well muscled chest and abs. The faded jeans that he wore hung low on his hips and ended at a pair of work boots.

"Uh....." she stammered, her mind had gone blank. " That's good."

' Great,' she thought, ' I sound like an idiot.'

" How old is your little girl?" Sarah asked, finally recovering some of her ability to form complete sentences.

" She's 6, and she loves fairy tales. Witches and dragons, princesses and knights. She loves them all."

" Well every girl wishes for a handsome prince to rescue her and sweep her off her feet." She started to blush as this statement came out.

He smiled at her again. " Every girl huh? What about you? Has your handsome prince rescued you yet?"

Sarah's mind quickly turned to Jareth. He did try to rescue her. She heard the last words that he had ever spoken to her echo through her mind.

'...fear me, love me, do as I say, and I will be your slave.'

" Handsome yes. Rescue me? Hardly. As for being a prince, lets just say he was a royal pain."

" Ouch. So it didn't work out huh?"

" Nope, he just wasn't the man of my dreams."

" So does that mean you're taking applications for a dream man?" he asked.

Sarah looked at him, a confused look on her face. " Aren't you married?"

" No, she turned me down. Took off with some guy and left me with our daughter Emma."

" Oh, so that makes you how old?"

" I'm only 26."

Sarah thought for a moment. ' Why not? He seems really nice and he is extremely cute.'

" Sure, I'd love to."

" Great. How about tonight?"

" Well tonight's not good, I already have plans with some friends. How about tomorrow?" She answered.

" OK. I'll pick you up here at 8 o'clock?"

" OK, see you then." Sarah replied. " Wait! I don't even know your name."

" It's Cale, and you're Sarah, right?"

" Yeah, it's nice to meet you." she said and stuck out her hand.

Cale reached out and took her hand, but instead of shaking it, he brought it to his lips and placed a light kiss along the top of her knuckles.

" I'll see you tomorrow then," he said and turned and walked away.

Jareth had watched this entire display from his perch in the tree.

He silently sat on the branch, rage coursed through him as the boy had brushed his lips over her hand. ' And she had the nerve to say that I had a disease!' he thought.

He took flight with the red book still clutched in his grasp.

' Tomorrow at 8, it should be an interesting evening.' he thought to himself. He flew off into the clouds silently plotting.
