Chapter 3: Keaira’s Entry

Back at the beginning, Keaira stared at the tall stone walls wondering what she did to get herself in this mess and trying to figure out how to get into the labyrinth. There was nothing she could use as a catapult; there were no doors, only the beige stones before her. She began to walk to the right. Within seconds, she thought she saw a firefly pass her by. When she could finally focus on what they were, she realized there were dozens of little faeries floating around. At first, she thought of how adorable they were and that she wanted to catch as many as possible so that they could fly her over the wall. She thought about it, laughed about it and decided it was a waste of time to wish to do something so stupid and childish. She began to walk along her obstacle, in the same direction as previously, for a good half an hour until she was faced with an immense door.

Knowing that faeries aren’t the nice little creatures they pretend to be, she grabbed one by the wings.

“Hey what do you think your doing?” the little creature squeaked in her high-pitched voice.

“I will release you once you open this door for me.” Keaira bargained. The faerie twisted herself every which way to be released from Keaira’s tight grasp but it was no use. Exhausted, she gave in and blew a golden powder from the palm of her hand which opened the heavy door. Keaira walked through, and then released her prisoner.

“Thank you for your help.” She said to the faerie, which was now flying away, begrudging humans. She was now faced with two long paths extending as far as the eye could see to her left and right, just like it happened to Sarah. The walls were now made of red brick and there were sparkling branches everywhere on the ground. She remembered when Sarah had recounted the terrible events of the labyrinth, that she had mentioned a furry blue worm with an English accent, telling her it was full of openings. With this recollection, Keaira decided to walk through the wall right in front of her. She walked slowly, very reluctant, and WHAM, she hit the wall.

“God damn it…!” she cried, as she moved two steps away. Yet again, with the same fear, she walked right into the wall. She did this twice more in the same way but always with the same result, she always ended smashed into a full blown brick wall.

“I don’t get it!!!” she bellowed out in frustration. She searched her mind for something that could help her get passed this place. She wished she knew how to summon the insightful English worm…Even if he couldn’t help, he would sure entertain her. She was about to lose it, exhaustion, frustration, foot pain and headaches were threatening so she sat down in an attempt to assess the situation. For the exhaustion she knew there was no cure, nor for the headache. As for the frustration, that would only end the day they kicked Jareth back into a distant memory, even though his revival was her fault. The foot pain on the other hand was something she could solve.

“Time for these shoes to go!” she decided. With that she took off her stilettos, feeling the throbbing pain felt by wearing high heels for too long. “I am so going to have blisters in the morning.” she said, shaking the blood back to her feet. When she had feeling in her feet once again, she leaned her head against the wall. She needed a solution and she needed one now. She dug her brain, without a solution. She brought up her knees and brought her forehead to rest on them. She was slowly falling asleep when an echo rang out in her head, a familiar voice that she hadn’t heard in a while. It was her mother’s voice with the most valuable advice she could’ve given, at least in this situation: “If you hesitate, you will never get anywhere.”

“That’s it!” she said. She took a deep breathe, got up with her shoes in hand and walked confidently towards the wall, without a doubt in her mind and then…walked through it. “YES!!!” is all she could find herself to scream. So, with a boost in confidence and a red forehead, she moved on through her task with 9 hours left.

The next place was a baron, desert type place made of beige stone, just like the original scenery. She found it odd when she came to a post made of the same beige stone has skinny hands, pointing in every direction. “Weird…” she thought, admiring this statue quickly before she moved on, in circles, even though she didn’t realize it at the time.

She walked for awhile but felt like she was getting nowhere. Eventually she realized she’d already been where she was, although it was hard to tell because everywhere looked the same. She went to turn back but found that the labyrinth had morphed. Another massive wall blocked her previous path. With this new occurrence, she decided to keep moving forward, the labyrinth might eventually morph in a way that was useful to her. So she tried going to her left where another big wall had formed. Every time she turned towards a new direction, there was a new obstacle blocking her way. Keaira got so frustrated that she screamed at the top of her lungs and sat down in complete frustration. She looked like a two year old having a tantrum because her mom wouldn’t get her any candy, but in Keaira’s case, who could blame her. At that point, everything had taken a toll on her and she burst into tears. She had been abducted by her own will, frightened by goblins, held a pretty little thing hostage, walked into a wall, multiple times and now she was stuck in ever changing place which prevented her from going anywhere. Regret was beginning to float over her. Regret for breaking up with her boyfriend, the only guy who could ever like a girl like her, which made her so concerned on setting Sarah up. Regret for wanting to set Sarah up with such a scoundrel. Finally, regret for drinking so much that night which impaired her judgment and got her in this horrible position.

“What’s wrong with you?” said a deep rude voice. She wiped her face free from her tears and looked up in the direction of the voice. There was no man standing there. It was simply two doors each with a goblin head knocker. One had a fat, round head with a giant hoop through his ears. The other had a long, skinny face with a giant hoop in his mouth.

“Nothing…anymore.” She answered cautiously to the fat goblin head.

“What is it with people and whispering?” he asked.

“But I’m not!” she replied in a half scream.

“Mm mmm mmm mmmm mm m!” came out of the other knocker’s mouth. She looked in his direction and decided to go through that door. The skinny faced knocker seemed less intimidating so she knocked and the door opened. While calming herself down, she looked at the clock beside the open door. There was 6 hours and 50 minutes left to save herself, Sarah and Kerri.

“Hold on, Sarah, I’m coming!” she said and then began her walk.

Walking through the door that kept speaking in a muffled tone, she entered into a forest. It was very gloomy and dank but the worst part of it, was the feeling of being watched. Keaira looked every which way, trying to catch a glimpse of what was making her feel so uncomfortable. Then, out of nowhere, an orange monkey-like creature with feathers popped up behind her.

“Hey, you came back! Now it’s our turn to take your head off!” he said as he advanced on her. She knew that she had never been to this place before but, maybe, he was mistaking her for Sarah because they had an uncanny resemblance and has been told time and time again that she, Sarah and Kerri might as well be triplets. Yet again, feeling intimidated by this new creature, she began to back away. As she did so, Keaira bumped into another one. When she turned to look at her new assailant, she realized she was surrounded and they were closing in on her. All she could do was make her way to the middle of the circle and hope to God for a miracle or some random thought of how to save herself to come up.

“This is it, this is the end.” Is all Keaira could think. Even though their limbs were removable, they seemed somehow much smarter than they were the last time they had been faced by a human and had much more furry in their eyes. They were only feet away from her when, all of a sudden, a wolf jumped inside the circle and just started to stare at her. She knew it to be official; there was no way she was leaving this forest alive.
