chapter 3
It had been nearly two weeks since Jack had arrived uninvited on their doorstep and it was on the brink of driving Will mad. Every time he turned around it seemed that Jack was right there taking up all his wife’s time. And to make matters worse Elizabeth only seemed all too happy to spend the majority of her time entertaining Jack. Will scowled as he headed into the dining hall to find Jack seated at the dinner table next to Elizabeth. Without saying a word he walked past them and sat down at the other end of the long table alone. Elizabeth looked at him with wide confused tea colored eyes before setting her glass of wine down.
“Will won’t you come sit down here with us?”
“No thank you…the two of you seem to have all the company you need. I’d rather just eat my meal in peace.”
Sighing heavily Elizabeth pushed her chair back and stood up smoothing the wrinkles out of her cream colored wool dress. She walked over to where her husband sat and came to stand at his side. Reaching out she gently touched his right hand. He jerked his hand away from her grasp angrily as he looked up at her.
“Will please, why are you acting like this?”
“Now isn’t the time to have this discussion Elizabeth.”
Frowning she placed her hands on hips and glared down at him before replying in a voice loud enough for Jack to hear.
“It’s never the time to have any sort of discussion with you is it? Fine then…go ahead and be angry at me! I’m tired of feeling like I always have to apologize when I’m doing nothing wrong! Jack is my friend and this is my house and he is welcome here as long as I want him to be!”
Jack looked back down at his half empty plate when he was met with a scowl from Will. Elizabeth stomped back down to the end of the table where Jack sat and muttered a quick apology before heading out of the dining hall.
“Jack I’m so sorry you had to hear all that. Please excuse me?”
Elizabeth hurried out of the dining hall feeling the tears as they burned her eyes. Damn him for making her cry! Not wanting to be seen crying she hurried for the safety of her old bedroom. Jack finished his glass of wine before standing. Turning towards Will he pushed his chair in before speaking.
“Ye know ye should treat Elizabeth with more respect? She loves ye…why she does is beyond my comprehension but she loves ye still.”
“Don’t tell me how to treat MY wife Jack!”
Shrugging Jack left Will to eat his dinner alone as he went off in search of Elizabeth. Heading up the winding staircase Jack already knew where to find her. She had gone to her old bedroom…it was a place she felt safe to let out all her feelings. Walking down the hall until he came to the very last room he knocked softly on the door. Elizabeth’s muffled voice came through it.
“Go away Will I don’t want to talk to you!”
She was crying…that much he could tell just by listening to her.
“Will’s not here love…jus’ Jack.”
A moment later the door opened and there stood Elizabeth her eyes all red from crying. Jack could see the wet streaks on her face where the tears had leaked from her beautiful tea colored eyes. Reaching out he gently rubbed his fingertips across her cheeks wiping away the moisture from her tears. Elizabeth leaned into his touch letting her eyes close. Jack took her by the hand and led her back into the room shutting the door behind him softly.
“Ye alright darlin’?”
“Yes I’m fine.”
“Ye don’t look fine love…yer crying.”
“It’s just that Will makes me feel so guilty for wanting to spend time with you.”
“Ye should never feel guilty bout that love…ye haven’t done anything wrong.”
“In Will’s opinion I have.”
“Since when have ye ever cared what anyone else thought love?”
“Since I got married and forgot about all the wonderful adventures I went on with you.”
“Oh darlin’ ye haven’t forgotten all those times…ye jus’ have more t’ think bout now that yer married.”
Sighing heavily Elizabeth sank down onto the bed pulling Jack down next to her. Still clutching his hand she looked over at him. He was still the same carefree and handsome pirate she remembered. And now she was a boring and timid housewife. She must look ridiculous to him now.
“Jack?”
“Hmm?”
“Do I seem different to you now that I’m married?”
“Different how love?”
“Less desirable.”
“Oh darlin’ ye couldn’t be more wrong…yer still jus’ as beautiful as ye were before ye got married.”
“You mean that?”
“With me entire black heart love.”
She chuckled at his attempt to make her laugh. Looking back up at him she noticed that they were much closer now than they had been when they had sat on the bed. Knowing that she should stand up or scoot back to create some distance between them she chewed on her bottom lip nervously. There was something that she wanted to ask him but was terribly afraid of the answer she might get. Taking a deep breath Elizabeth finally decided that she really had nothing to lose by asking him a simple question she turned towards him.
“Jack?”
“Hmm?”
“Do you remember the night of my wedding when you came to see me?”
“Course I do love…I was lucky enough t’ catch a glimpse of ye naked.”
Her cheeks turned bright red at his forwardness before she pushed herself to keep talking.
“Did you really want me to run away with you or were you just playing a game with me to see if I would do it?”
“No games love…I wanted ye with me.”
“And now?”
“Those feelings haven’t changed love…jus’ the situation has.”
Elizabeth felt her heart leap into her throat at Jack’s admission to still wanting her. Her eyes darted to his lips and suddenly she wanted to kiss him. Leaning towards him she tilted her face up offering her mouth to him. Knowing that he should be a gentleman and walk away Jack inwardly cursed himself for not having the strength to do it. Leaning in and bending his head down he captured her mouth with his. His eyes slipped closed when he felt her plump silken lips slide across his weathered ones.
Elizabeth opened her mouth begging Jack to deepen the kiss. Unable to deny her Jack slipped his tongue into her mouth and gave her what she had silently begged him for. The kiss seemed to ignite and their hands began roaming everywhere. Elizabeth could feel herself melting into the moment deeper as Jack’s hands slid up her stomach towards her breasts. The moment his hands cupped her breasts she arched into him and moaned into his mouth. Jack felt the stirrings of his arousal as his hands left her breasts. He needed to touch her. Hitching her dress up to the middle of her thighs he nudged her knees apart. Elizabeth knew that she should stop him but she couldn’t tear herself away from him.
Jack slipped his hand between Elizabeth’s thighs and paused just before reaching her sex. Then slipping his fingers into the waistband of her cotton knickers he groaned when he felt the coarse curls of her womanhood. Dipping his middle finger into the sparse curls he found her pearl and caressed it softly making her hips raise off the bed. Being a little more bold Jack pressed his finger harder against her sex until he felt it beginning to slide into her. The realization that Jack’s finger was sliding inside her was enough to destroy the magic of the moment. Elizabeth pushed Jack’s hand away and looked up at him with wide tea colored eyes. Her voice was trembling when she spoke.
“Jack no…we can’t! I’m sorry!”
Standing up Elizabeth jerked her dress back down and hurried out of the room leaving Jack alone to his thoughts. She hurried down the stairs to the sitting room and out onto the terrace. Finally alone she sank down onto the stone bench and buried her face in her hands. The tears came all too quickly this time. How could she have let Jack touch her in such a way? She was married to Will and he was the only man who had ever touched her there! Well he was up until a moment ago! Even though she knew it was wrong she still couldn’t deny that she had wanted to feel Jack’s hands on her. She wanted it still even after she had told him they couldn’t. But she wouldn’t tell him…he couldn’t know just how much she wanted him. Not if her marriage to Will was going to remain intact.
