Rivers Run Deep
Chapter 31
Over the coming weeks, Lee’tha gained in strength, her arms healing nicely. El’s practice on the drums was spurattic. The council always in question and debate over her competence to play for the Gathering. With the constant interruptions, she’d never be ready. Ver’On was in constant arguments with the council, no doubt being spurred by his grand sire Kire’Baa. Every time he saw the old Yautja, he was sneaking around outside the medical bay, but never going inside. Only just this morning, when El arrived for her breakfast with Lee’tha, did Kire’Baa stop them. Had Sol not been with her as usual, Ver’On was sure she would have ended up dead. “Why do you come here all the time?!” the old one demanded.
Sol was waved silent, a gentle hand to his forearm. Sol stood back. “Ter’Oth has medicine for me, to inoculate me against your ailments. I react strangely to it, so to ensure that I do not embarrass your family, I come here, this way, if I react, I will not offend any Yautja, nor your family honor.”
“What would an Ooman know of honor?!” he demanded, stepping closer to her.
El never moved. Had she looked up, she would have gotten one of his longer facial spikes in her eye, he was that close. “I understand now,” she said softly.
“And what is that you understand?” Kire asked, completely surprised by her tone.
“You are in flash must. It is little wonder why you do not want me to play the drums. You can barely restrain yourself even now.”
Kire roared at her, but she didn’t back away. He leaned closer to her, whispering in her ear, right above the translator. “You’ve no idea what I’m capable of…pray you never find out.”
El just turned her head slightly to his ear, saying only three words. Three words that stabbed him deeply, ensuring the fact that he had to kill her, and soon. “I already know.”
Ter’Oth had heard voices outside the med bay doors, Lee’tha was still asleep, so opening the doors was of little worry. When he did, he was met with the sight of Kire’Baa stepping back from El, his rage plainly written across his face as he stared down the Ooman female. When he looked at El, she had the same dangerous look on her face, but what surprised him most, was the storm building in her eyes. As he took in the scene, he wondered if the stories that Ver’On had told of her rage were really true, and thought that perhaps she had not lost her edge of rage after all. She held it in check very carefully, and had almost let it slip. ‘I hope Ver’On knows what he’s mating,’ he thought, and cleared his throat with a grunted greeting to Kire.
Kire looked at the healer, then back to the Ooman, then he slowly stalked away, but before he cleared the door, he stopped, his gaze locked to the back of the room. Ter’Oth turned to see what had captured his attention, to find Lee’tha, shaking violently next to the privacy screen. Ter’Oth pulled Sol and El into the room, then quickly closed and locked the door. El went to Lee’tha, ushering her down the hall to her bed.
Their plans had been ruined. Until now, Kire’Baa had no idea where Lee’tha was. Nor did he know where her sisters were. Lee’tha now paced the lab, ringing her hands together, despite the pain of her nearly completely healed bones, as she twisted her arms inside the casts.
“He’s going to kill me!” she gasped. “I can’t get away from him.”
“Lee’tha, it’ll be ok. You’ll come and stay with me and Ver’On.”
“NO! You have Sol, you have Ver’On. You don’t need my reputation to mire what you have. NO! I will not allow it!!”
“You don’t have a choice. I’m not giving you one.”
“As long as my sisters are safe, I don’t’ care what he does to me.”
“Well, one of your sisters is very happy.”
“What? Why?”
“Apparently your great aunt has granted her ritual. She’s now mated to a fine strong Yautja.”
Lee’tha’s heart skipped a beat. She hadn’t realized her sisters were getting to that age, let alone one of them being old enough for ritual at all. “What’s his name?”
“Tam – Tim – oh got what was it?”
“Ti’am-tal?”
“Yes, that’s it. God some of your names are worse than journeying to Japan.”
“Ti’am-tal is a fine male yes. I’ve observed him fighting from time to time, and I’ve seen him whispering to my sister. I’m pleased De’zal is happy.”
“Oh it’s not De’zal…it’s the other one.”
“Rudlin? She’s far too young.”
“Apparently she got older.”
Lee’tha sighed. “Apparently…Sense my shame was known to my family, none of them have wanted anything to do with me, especially my sisters. But that doesn’t mean that I don’t care for them still.”
“You can’t choose your family, you can only choose your friends. I hope I can be counted among those as your friends.”
Lee’tha smiled, and gave the Ooman a hug. “Of course.” And she started to cry. “He’s going to kill me, I know he is.”
“No he won’t, because you won’t ever be alone.” Just then Sol entered the room, carrying the trays of food. He seemed a bit upset. “What is it Sol?” El asked.
“Nothing,” he sighed, and returned to his post at the door.
“Sol? What is going on out there?” she asked as she heard some grunting from down the hall. Sol stepped inside, then closed and locked the door.
“Some of the male callers of Lee’tha’s are demanding that they see her.”
“Not any more,” Lee’tha stated. “I will not return to that life.”
“I won’t let you,” El stated, and went to open the door. Sol stopped her, pulling her arm back roughly. “OWE!”
“I’m sorry El,” he said, releasing her. “But I will not permit you to put yourself between Lee’tha and rutting males. Not while I can do just the same.”
“Sol…”
“NO! I am your Kadji, THAT is my purpose, to protect you, as Ver’On would, when he cannot be here. There are many out there, and Ter’Oth has them under control. Once I hear quiet I will go investigate. For now, stay here, and have your breakfast.”
“Sol?”
“DO AS I SAY!” El leapt back from his sudden change, she’d never seen him like this. It was as though he was angrier more at her for trying to leave, than he was of the males that were trying to get inside. Lee’tha pulled her back, away from Sol, directing her to sit to eat. It wasn’t long before Sol left the room, locking the door as he left.
“Your Kadji is very strong willed,” Lee’tha stated.
“Yeah, odd though, I’ve never seen him like that.”
Ter’Oth took some of the data books from Sol, as he helped the healer clean up the mess the male visitors had left. Something seemed to bother the young Yautja, usually he was all too eager to return to his post to protect El, even though Ter’Oth was the only other male in the room. Only this time, he was looking for any excuse not to go back. “Sol?”
“She lied!” Sol stated loudly. “She lied to Kire’Baa! I can’t believe she did that!”
“El lied? About what?”
“About coming here for medicine! She takes nothing but food while here. Why would she lie!?”
“Perhaps to dissuade the elder from pursuing her.”
“Pursuing her? He wants her dead!”
“All the more reason to misdirect him.”
“Ver’On has forbidden her to lie! I HEARD HIM!”
“Will you tell him?”
“I MUST! It’s my duty!”
“Talk to her first. Find out why she lied.”
“There is not reason to lie.”
“Perhaps not to us, but maybe to her…remember she is Ooman. Her ways are very different than ours. She’s still trying after all.”
Sol looked to where the hall was, the screen, though damaged now, was still in place. “I will ask her. But I must still inform Ver’On.”
“I didn’t say you should not.”
When Sol returned to the females, they were totally engrossed in discussing El’s latest drum practice, and how she’d butchered another simple piece the drum master had given her. “I don’t know,” El laughed. “…maybe I just have no sense of rhythm after all.”
“By the sounds of it, I’m surprised your heart doesn’t stop beating from time to time, just to try and catch up.”
El tossed a soft biscuit at her, and the two laughed. El then noticed Sol’s reflection in the window of the cabinet, and turned to him. “Are you ok Sol? I get the feeling you’re angry with me.”
“I am not angry,” he stated. “I’m disappointed, and I must tell Ver’On that you disobeyed him.”
“Excuse me? Disobeyed Ver’On? How?”
“You lied to Kire’Baa!” he nearly shouted.
“I did no such thing!” she defended, getting up to face him. “I promised Ver’On that I would say nothing but what is true while I lived here. I’ve not broken my word!”
“I HEARD YOU!!!” Sol shouted, his growl nearly vibrating her chest as he stepped up to her. “I was right beside you when you did it! And now you lie to me!” Lee’tha gasped as she saw his hands clench to fists.
“Beg him to forgive you!” Lee’tha shouted.
“Sol, what did I tell Kire’Baa? EXACTLY! What did I tell him?”
“That you came here to be medicated by Ter’Oth,” he said, but he kept his fists at his sides. “How dare you ask me what you said.”
“I ask it because I wanted to know what you interpreted, which is the same as what Kire’Baa would have interpreted.”
“What!?”
“ I told Kire’Baa, that ‘Ter’Oth has medicine for me, to inoculate me against your ailments’. Which is TRUE! I also told him that ‘I react strangely to it’, which is also TRUE! What I didn’t say was that Ter’Oth would GIVE me an injection, once I got in here.
“I also told him that ‘to ensure that I do not embarrass his family’ namely you and Ver’On, ‘that I came here, so if I did react, I would not offend any Yautja, nor his family honor’, which is true. I would gladly walk around in nothing but chocolate syrup, if it would stave off any embarrassment that I might cause you or Ver’On.
“And you interpreted what I said, EXACTLY as I had hoped. Every word, every syllable was truth. Not a bit of it a lie. All I did was leave out certain phrases, so Kire would shut the hell up and get out of my face.”
Sol shrunk back in posture more and more, wondering just why he was guarding this little warrior. She may not be able to fight, she may walk with a bit of a limp at times, but she could certainly cut you off at your knees with her words. He looked to the floor, then back to her. Her green eyes were alight with a fire he’d never seen in them before, and her posture had totally changed. She was far more confident standing before him, far more sure of herself. If it was an act, it was a good one.
As he reflected on her words, he discovered that she was right. She had said those EXACT words to the elder, and yes it was all true. Ter’Oth had made some medicine for her, and had stored it here in the lab while she recovered from the first dose. It would make sense that she would wish to be in the company of a healer just in case her continued reaction got worse over time, and yes it was embarrassing, Ver’On and El were not even officially mated, and he was carrying her unconscious body through the halls of the ship, for all to see.
He’d defended his mentor and the mate he chose, against some of the males as they laughed about the situation at the dinner table. After several bowls of food were sacrificed to the fight, the elder Kon’det, ordered the males to apologies, and not speak of the matter again.
Sol looked up to the little Ooman, she had indeed gained some strength in her words, if not in her muscles. “I am sorry El,” he sighed. “I did not see it that way.”
“Its ok, Sol. Just ask me politely next time to explain something. I hate to get my back up with you. It makes it awkward all day long.”
Sol nodded. “I must still tell Ver’On. But I will make sure he understands what you said first, before he decides to try and punish you.”
“I can tell him.”
“No, you two barely say three words together, before I hear you sighing into sleep for the night.”
“Well if you would let me nap in the day, I wouldn’t be dead tired at night. I sleep more than you do you know.”
“Yes, I know, I just wanted to keep you moving. Such a target is harder to hit.” El Smiled, and slapped his arm Sol laughed gently, and held her close, the first time he did so sense they had known each other. Gently he released her, and took up his post at the door.
El turned to Lee’tha. “I want to know something,” she said. “Maybe it takes a female to explain it properly.”
“What is it?”
“What EXACTLY is a Kadji?”
Ver’On roared with laughter as Sol told him what El had said to him. He got the idea right away. Then he turned to his soon to be intimate mate and held her close. Only she didn’t return the gesture as she often had. Ver’On stood back, his amused smile fading, his laughter ceasing. “My’El? What is it?”
“Kadji?” she asked him. Sol stepped up hearing his title mentioned, but she did not address him. “You expect me to mate, not only with you, but with him too!!!”
Ver’On looked from El to Sol, then back. “Only if you wish,” he said, a-matter-of-factly too. “Many Yautja couples have a Kadji. Such is a great honor to a young warrior. He learns not only the skills of a hunt from his mentor, and the female’s first mate, but he also learns through participation and observation the proper means of mating. We’re about the only clan that still practices the old ways. They are known to all Yautja, but very few of the old ways are still practiced. Do you not have something similar on your world?”
El sighed, and put her arms around his torso at last. “Not to such an extent as to make it honorable as your people have done. To my people, a situation such as this, would be considered…extremely sexually exciting, and you’d never get them to keep their clothes on for longer than and hour. If you’re lucky.”
“Now that would be some serious heat!” Sol mused, and patted Ver’On on his shoulder. “But seriously, I want to speak to you about that.”
“What?” Ver’On asked, not taking his eyes off El’s for a moment.
“I do not wish to mate with El.” Ver’On shot Sol a look. Was El not good enough to be taken by a Kadji? Did Sol feel it beneath him to desire an Ooman? “Please, hear me out. I will remain as Kadji, standing in to protect El when you cannot. I will do all that a Kadji is to do, but I will not mate with her. Ver’On, I’m sorry, but to me, to share one’s mate at the same time as taking her himself…is…well, I don’t feel right about it. I will be there at your ritual. I will be there each time you mate, to learn of what you do to her, so that I may do the same to a female that I choose, but I will not mate her myself.”
Ver’On shrugged his shoulders. He couldn’t force Sol to mate with El, it was in deed his choice. “If that is what you wish.” El suddenly relax in his arms. “El? What is it?”
“Honestly, I’m glad that Sol doesn’t want me. I’m terrified enough just the thought of you…and…Lee’tha told me it can be a bit dangerous.”
“So you are taking advice form Lee’tha?”
“Yes. She’s the only female here that will give me straight answers to my questions. And if you don’t like it…tough. I’m not letting her go. She has enough problems without her friends deserting her.”
There came a sudden pounding on the door to their quarters. Sol opened the door, and Ter’Oth pushed Lee’tha into the room. “What is this?” Ver’On asked, seeing the female take a seat on the pillows.
“Did El not tell you?” Ter’Oth asked.
Ver’On looked at her. “I was getting to that.” She stated, and explained how their plans had been ruined, when Kire saw Lee’tha in the medical bay. Ver’On seethed as he was told that Lee’tha would be staying with them for a while. “Ver’On, please, she’s no where else to go. No one else to turn to.”
He stepped up to her, his growl just beyond his words. “If my brother were alive, and knew what she’d done…”
“It wasn’t her choice, Tusk,” she whispered, using her pet name for him. “She was attacked, and no one would listen to her. The roomers began to fly before she could be heard. Then when your bother died, all was lost to her.” Ver’On turned away, only to have El pull him back. “Be there for her. If not for her, for me. I need your help. I’m not going to be on the drums during the gathering, the councel has pretty much said their piece about that idea. Help me keep Lee’tha safe. Till you can discover, for yourself, who her attacker was.”
“You know who it was don’t you?” El said nothing. “A promise?” She nodded. Ver’On growled low in his chest, but pulled her to him all the same. “It is what I adore about you. You keep your word when you give it. Very well, my mate. I will help you keep her safe. But I best learn of his identity before we are met by the other ships for this gathering.”
“All you have to do, is see who keeps poking their nose in your business. And who puts Lee’tha on edge, every time they’re around. That’s all I’ll say.”
Ver’On growled beneath his breath as he watched El join Lee’tha at the window. The two were getting closer and closer as friends, just as Uni had in the past. He didn’t like it then, and her certainly didn’t like it now.
