chapter 31

A/N: Thanks to everyone for the great reviews!! I really appreciate all the feedback!! Now onto the latest chapter!

Gibbs waved Tobias over to him as he made ready to steer the Pearl into the small harbor of Aberdour, Scotland. The tall and solidly built African man walked slowly over to where Gibbs was at the helm of the Pearl.

“Aye sir….ye needed something?”

“Aye Tobias…I’m goin’ t’ need ye t’ look after the Pearl an’ make sure nobody tries t’ get any bright ideas bout stealin’ er understand?”

“Yes sir…ye have no worries…the Pearl be safe wit me….nobody take er from me.”

Gibbs smiled and slapped Tobias on the back as he finished steering the Pearl into the harbor.

“Thank ye m’ boy…I knew I could count on ye.”

As Gibbs docked the Pearl into the small harbor just outside of the little town of Aberdour he stepped aside for Tobias to stand guard at the helm. Leaving Tobias to guard the wheel he hurried over to Jack’s cabin and knocked on the door. Jack’s voice floated through the door to him.

“Who goes there mate?”

“Jack…it’s me Gibbs!”

“Oh…well why didn’t ye say so in the first place? Come in.”

Rolling his blue eyes Gibbs opened the door to Jack’s cabin and walked inside. He found Jack kneeling by the bedside clutching Elizabeth’s left hand tightly in both his hands. She was awake but she looked deathly pale.

“We’ve jus’ made port in Aberdour Jack…I left Tobias t’ guard the Pearl t’ make sure nobody gets a wild hair an’ tries t’ make off with er.”

“Good thinking Gibbs…nicely done. Now then…we need t’ get Izzy t’ land an’ then t’ a doctor.”

“Right…well my cousin Galen Christy doesn’t live far from the harbor.”

“Ye never told me ye had a cousin here in Scotland.”

“Oh well…Galen isn’t really blood related…but we grew up here together in Aberdour an’ he’s been like family ever since. He’s good people Jack.”

“He has t’ be if he’s been a friend t’ ye for this long.”

The two men chuckled at Jack’s little joke as they prepared to get Elizabeth ready to travel. Jack carefully scooped Elizabeth up into his arms making her give a small whimper of discomfort as he did. She was dressed in a plain white cotton nightgown. Her hair looked as if it hadn’t been brushed in a day or so and Gibbs could see the dark circles starting to form underneath her normally bright tea colored eyes. To put it plainly the girl just didn’t look good at all. Truth be told Elizabeth looked as if she were on death’s doorstep. But Gibbs would never say such a thing to Jack…he knew just how much Elizabeth meant to him.

Jack and Gibbs loaded Elizabeth into the longboat before they eased themselves into it. Noah and Pintel lowered the longboat into the waters carefully. Gibbs untied the longboat from the Pearl and sat down to begin rowing towards the shore. Once they neared the shore and were only in about two feet of water Gibbs climbed out of the longboat and pushed it the rest of the way onto the white sanded beach. Jack climbed out of the longboat and then once again carefully scooped Elizabeth into his arms. Gibbs looked over and could see the irritation on Elizabeth’s face. It wouldn’t be long before she said something.

“Jack…must you carry me…I can walk you know?”

“Nonsense…yer not well darlin’ an’ I’ll not have ye over exerting yerself so m’ carrying ye an’ that’s that.”

Elizabeth rolled her tea colored eyes which made Gibbs let out a small chuckle. He quickly feigned clearing his throat when he saw the sharp look that Jack shot him. The three spent the rest of the short journey in silence. Jack noticed Gibbs had quickened his pace once they got to the edge of the small town.

“Here we are Jack…that’s Galen’s cottage jus’ outside of Aberdour. It’s not much…but it’ll be a safe place t’ stay.”

“As long as Izzy is safe…that’s all that matters Gibbs.”

Gibbs lead them onto the porch of the small wood and stone built cottage before knocking on the door. It had been quite some time since he had last been in Aberdour to visit his cousin Galen…he hoped that he would be greeted with open arms and not at the end of a pistol. That thought made him swallow nervously as they stood there waiting for someone to answer the door.

A/N: Short chapter I know…but the next one will be longer I promise!! So now that they are in Scotland Elizabeth is going to get the grim news that she has to stay bedridden if she doesn’t want to lose the baby. Please read and review!!
