Chapter 30

~~~~~ 2009 ~~~~~
When I patted Gob’s shoulder I spotted Jack at the foot of the stairs. He was staring down at the ugly vase my parents had sent. "Morning. How about some killer eggs?" I offered. My heart felt light as a feather now he was free.
"Where did you get this?" He picked up the vase.
"Who else buys me expensive crap I can’t stand? My parents." I smirked. "How many eggs do you want?" I turned to the stove. I jumped when I heard a wet thwacking noise followed by a clunk and the pinging of silverware hitting the floor. I didn’t want to turn around. I knew what I would see.
"Look at me." Jack demanded. I pivoted on my heels as slowly as I could. Gob was face down in his plate of eggs. One arm was still partially propped on the table, and the other hung at his side. His fork had skittered across the floor along with what would have been his last bite of eggs. Blood had sprayed across Jack’s face, onto the refrigerator and even onto the ceiling. It was pooling in Gob’s hair. I didn’t want to look at him, but I had to go to him. I tentatively touched his hand. He had elegant hands. His nails were slightly too long for a boy, just like Jack’s, and he had scabs on his arms from flea bites. I was going to get him some cream for them.
"Gob?" I didn’t recognize my own voice.
"I said look at me." Jack reiterated. I looked up, and he stuck the muzzle of his gun to the base of Gob’s skull. He pulled the trigger twice in quick succession, and my legs folded under me like I was the one who’d been shot. "What? Did you think we could be a family, Scarlet? Did you think Gob was our little Chuck U. Farley Napier?" Jack finally crouched down in front of me. "How does it feel, Scarlet? We’re squaresies now. You killed our first son, and I killed our replacement son. Even Steven." He waved the gun around as he spoke, but I wasn’t scared of him. I eased my hand up and took hold of his hand on the gun. I pulled the muzzle to my chest and stared into his eyes. It just had to end.
**********
Jack stood back up, bumping into Gob’s body accidentally. The gangly limbs crumpled to the floor, landing in the pool of blood around Scarlet’s legs. "Whoops, excuse me." He said and picked up the box that had held the vase. The mailing label had a return address for Henry and Evelyn McClure in Metropolis. Jack cut the label off and stuffed it in his coat pocket. He spared a last look over his shoulder at Scarlet. "Hmph, some tough chick." He banged out the back door and into the alley. A group of costumed children strolled by eating candy.
"Cool mask, mister." One of them called out.
"Happy Halloween, kid." He grinned back
Author’s Note: Well, that’s all folks! I busted my ass finishing this story so it would be done by Friday, May 13, 2011 as a little homage to Jack and Scarlet. I really hope you all enjoy it, and I want to thank you all for reading. Extra special thanks to the ones who rated and reviewed! I sure hate saying goodbye to this story (I started it two years ago), but maybe there’s a sequel to be had. I don’t know about you, but I sure think Dr. Palmer and Scarlet’s parents deserve a little visit from the Joker!
