CHAPTER 04

The sun beamed heavily upon the surface of the water, creating a seascape of glitter. Jack stood by the railings with his body swaying softly with the rhymthic rocking of the Pearl and his eyes gazing at the rippling water below. His eyes nonchalantly followed a peculiar looking fish with radiantly blue stripes as it swam spiritedly along side the ship. He could not take his attention off the fish. It was an extraordinarily beautiful creature, but poisonous, no doubt. Yet maybe it was the paradoxical nature of the fish that attracted the captain for it reminded him of his Will -- so desirable yet the feelings that were aroused were so dangerous.

"Uh...Cap'n Sparrow..." Mr. Gibbs cleared his throat unceremoniously, only to find his captain silent as before.

"...Jesus...JACK!" the man croaked out of impatience.

"Hmm?" Jack responded softly, without turning around nor with much expression.

"...Well I thought ye would like to know 'bout your boy...about Will I mean." Mr. Gibbs paused and lowered his head slightly, a little embarrassed at the comment that slipped out of his mouth.

Jack's body stiffened at the mention of Will's name.

Hearing nothing but silence, Mr. Gibb's added, "He's still unstable." Jack's fists clenched tighter around the railings but held his tongue. Mr. Gibbs tried subtly to peer over Jack's shoulder at his face, but couldn't quite get the angle, no matter how the stocky man strained his neck. With a deep sigh of resignation, he continued, "but by me word...he'll live. He's improving each day. He's just lost...a lot of blood, ye see. Well he was starving, weak and battered for weeks to begin with...so the boy will black out from time to time. 'Tis no worries. He just needs to rest up."

Jack's shoulders slouched with relief as he dropped his head between his elbows that rested on the side of the Pearl. He closed his eyes and inhaled deeply.

"I guess I'll be going back to work," Mr. Gibbs, rather unsure of how to handle the situation, turned and mumbled lowly.

"Ok," the captain replied emotionlessly, almost inaudible.

With that Mr. Gibbs turned around with a hard expression plastered onto his face -- an expression of frustration, indignation, and annoyance.

"He asked for ye, Jack." Mr. Gibbs blurted out with restrained anger in his tone, "God...the poor boy cries ye name in his sleep..."

"Leave me be." Jack choked out.

"I won't let ye do this to the poor boy. He's a good lad. He doesn't deserve this."

"THANK YE, MR. GIBBS...NOW JUST LEAVE..." Jack yelled frustratingly, slamming his right fist down hard on the side of the railings, chipping off a piece of the wooden frame.

"YOU THINK I WANT GRATITUDE FROM YE?" The older man took a daring step closer to his captain, "I DON'T GIVE A DEVIL'S EYE WHAT ye think of me!"

Jack flung around in anger and approached the man in fury. He stopped short of mere inches from Mr. Gibbs's face that stood stern.

"I order ye...as captain of the Pearl..." Jack grinded out between his teeth, trying to hold back hopeless tears and ignoring the burning sensation of guilt in the pit of his stomach.

"Think of the boy," Mr. Gibbs muttered, "ye selfish bastard." The older man strode away mumbling to himself, leaving Jack with his lips slightly parted, speechless.
