Not So Formal Introductions

Chapter 4

“Does it thrill
Does it sting
When you feel what I bring
And you wish that you had me to hold”

Excerpt from the song “Harder To Breathe” by Maroon 5

William sat up with, surprisingly very little pain. Looking around he spotted his uniform, laid carefully over the back of a chair and realized that he needed to relieve himself. Not wanting to repeat his earlier show of unsteadiness, he grabbed the side of bed for support. He was amazed at how little pain he felt. Taking a tentative step forward he noticed that the wounds in his stomach throbbed slightly but not nearly as much as he anticipated they would.

He was just looking around in search of a bedpan or something else into which he could relieve his aching bladder when the door to his room opened. He stared in shock and awe at the woman standing before him.

In odd-looking garments with a bag slung over her shoulder, she stood in the doorway looking uncertain. Something about her made him forget whatever it was he was about to say. She made him speechless! He couldn’t figure out what it was, but her shapely figure and soft but intense brown eyes made him feel like ever the foolish schoolboy.

“I’ve brought these for you”. She said as she handed the bag to him.

He reached out and took the bag, trying to remember where he had seen her. Opening the bag and looking inside, he suddenly remembered! This was the same woman who had seen to him when he had awoken. His pistols and saber were tucked securely in the bag, all in the same condition as when he had given them over to her.

“Thank you”. He managed to croak out. He couldn’t take his eyes off of her. She was the most beautiful thing he had ever seen. Taking her hand in his, he kissed it, all the while staring into her captivating eyes. He noticed that she seemed nervous, almost scared of his touch. Letting go of her hand, he took a step back, to put her at ease and once again introduced himself.

“William Tavington, very pleased to make your acquaintance”.

The woman stared at him for a moment, as if at a loss for words before finally regaining her composure.

“Catherine Wakefield”. She said. “If you can forgive me, I’d like to get to the point. How did you get into my apartment?”

William thought about it. “I don’t rightly know Miss. Wakefield. I awoke and there I was. I am awfully sorry about the mess I made of your bedding and floor”. He said taking a step towards her.

She stiffened her posture but didn’t step back. “No need to apologize. It didn’t take long to clean”. She lied

“Please allow me to repay you”. He said laying his hand along her face. He didn’t know what had come over him. For some reason he felt the intense need to touch this woman.

She didn’t flinch at his touch as he feared she would. He had to admit that the circumstances in which they met were not exactly conducive to making her feel comfortable with him. He didn’t blame her for being a little apprehensive, if not frightened of him.

“And how are you going to do that?” she asked, her face expressionless.

Without any hesitation at all, William brought his lips to hers in a unhurried yet hungry kiss. He felt her tense then relax in his embrace. His hand was at the nape of my neck, his other hand on the small of her back pulling her closer. She was absolutely intoxicating, making him feel as if he had just drank an entire decanter of Lord Cornwallis’s best brandy.

He didn’t know how or why he was here, but he knew one thing for sure. He was beginning to like the year 2003.
