Whisper In The Dark

I glanced at the man across the bar to find he was gone. He had appeared mysteriously as he had disappeared. Laura noticed that I didn't get up to dance all night. She shouted over the club beats.

"Come on Amanda!"

She grabbed my hand and lead me to the dancefloor. I wasn't long before I was in the circle of friends in the middle of the club. But as I danced, I could not help but feel a pair of eyes on me, watching my every move. I turned around and it was the man in the black suit. Only this time he was not wearing his sunglasses and his eyes were focused only on me. He was quite attractive. The look on his face was intense and I felt as if I was within his line of sight. I turned around to look in his direction and once again he was gone. It was like he was a ghost. Finally, I had to go the ladies room so I excused myself from the group for a moment. Once I finished my business. I heard a male voice behind me calling my name.

"Hello Amanda."

The voice was seductive yet mechanical at the same time. I attempted to turn around.

"Don't look back." The voice commanded gently.

My heart was racing. Finally I spoke.

"How do you know my name?"

"I know a lot about you. I have been wanting to meet you for a long time."

My knees felt weak but I was doing my best to keep it together.

"Who are you?"

And then I felt his mouth come close to my ear, his voice almost put me in trance as he spoke.

"I'm an admirer."

I could feel his hot breath on my neck as he continued to speak in that seductive tone.

"Admirer? You mean..."

"Yes. You answered my personal ad. Did you get the roses I sent?"

His hand stroked my hair sending waves of electricity up and down my spine even though I had not seen his face yet. My nipples were hardening underneath the bodice of my dress.

"You still haven't told me your name." I told him.

"You'll know when the time comes Amanda."

"Was that also you on my computer?"

"Yes."

"How?"

"Right now all I can tell you is things are going to change and they will get better. I brought you here to tell you that in person."

Tears started to form in my eyes. I couldn't believe what this stranger was saying to me. If it were anyone else, I would have told them that they were on crack and to leave me the fuck alone. But there was something about this man's words that were quite genuine.

"I have been watching you."

"Why?"

"Just listen to me Amanda. I know why you are here. I know why you shut everyone in your life out after your fiance' died. And why you barely ever go out and you are always glued to your computer screen. I know what you are looking for"

His body was against mine and I felt as if for the first time in long time someone was actually made for me. I hadn't felt that way since Kyle died. He continued to speak softly.

"And what is that?" I asked him.

"To feel whole again. I know because I have been wanting the same thing."

His voice had now hypnotized me to where I couldn't move form my spot. It have become a drug that had seeped into my skin.

"It was your feeling that brought you here. You know the question just as much as I did."

"Will I ever be alright?"

"Yes you will be."

I no longer fellt his body against mine. I turned and I saw the man in the black suit disappear into the sea of bodies. I wondered if I would ever see him again. I felt a hand on my shoulder, it was Laura.

"What the hell was that all about?" She asked me.

I felt a little flushed.

"Uhm ... nothing." I told her.

Laura smiled at me like she knew something was up.

"Well that nothing sure was fine though. Did you see his ass?"

"Sis!"

"Hey just because I'm married doesn't mean I'm dead. But speaking of asses, I Know he was checking yours!"

Why did my sister have to be so blunt? I felt myself turning red. We went back to the table where we finished our drinks. As the other girls were engrossed in their conversations I was thinking about the man in the black suit.

Finally, the club closed and all of us made our way out the door. Laura was obviously too drunk to drive and since I was the sober one of the bunch I volunteered to drive everyone home. I dropped everone off one by one, starting with Dominique, then Sara, and then Bonnie. Laura would be the last since she didn't live too far from me. But as I was dropping my friends off I could not help but notice a black Audi was following me the whole time. I was hoping he wasn't an undercover cop because I was driving without a license and I could not afford to get busted. Finally, I pulled into the parking lot of my apartment building and I noticed that the black Audi was still right on my tail. My heart was beating fast. The car just stopped for a quick second and then just kept moving.

Just in case, I wrote down the license plate number which read IS 5416. I thought it odd, but I went inside and made my way to my apartment. I got ready for bed and fell asleep. For the first time in over five years I would a have no nightmares.
