Chapter 4 - Social Mores and the Truth About Being Slapped

"I promise you, James. They were perfect gentlemen!" Elizabeth huffed as she sat down on the divan in the parlor, crossing her arms in disgust. "I think you're just jealous."

"No, my dear, I could never be jealous of that hoodlum."

"But what about Will? You've always been jealous of him because I paid him more attention than I did you. And when I chose him over you four years ago..."

"That was four years ago. I've gotten fully over the incident. After all, I have you, he doesn't. I've even left him out of my anger toward Sparrow for kidnapping you."

"Oh, James! As I said, they just wanted to visit. Could they have come here? No. You'd have had them put in the stockade before even saying 'good afternoon'. This is the only way we can visit as friends."

"And what was it that you told Sparrow as he kissed your ear." She could see James was fuming.

Elizabeth laughed. "James, my darling husband. He didn't kiss me. He whispered into my ear, telling me not to worry; that he'd not kill me. I told him I knew that."

"And yet you looked terrified for my benefit. I knew he wouldn't kill you. That's why I didn't back off. But you went along with him!"

"Only to save both their lives. You'd have ordered them shot if they resisted without a hostage."

James sat down next to her. Putting an arm around his lovely wife, his demeanor calmed in order to explain it to her. "My darling, I love you, and when they come and take you away, I fret for your safety. Not necessarily from them, but by other pirates or from anyone they would attack or would attack them. I don't wish to find my beautiful Elizabeth in the wreckage of the Black Pearl after she's lost a battle with some merchant ship."

"My wonderful husband, you need not worry about that. Jack has ordered his men that while I'm aboard, they are to avoid all ships. They abstain from hunting prey, and avoid everyone. Sometimes we go ashore on a beach for a picnic." She clutched her mouth, realizing she'd said something wrong. "Oh James, PLEASE don't use that information to hunt them down! You'd be killing my FRIENDS. It's MY fault they come here at all. Jack would rather leave Port Royal forever."

James faced her and sighed. "Elizabeth, somehow they must stop coming here and kidnapping you. I would personally allow them to sail away if they would only STAY away. I know they're your friends, darling, but they're PIRATES. They've killed many of my men, and have wreaked havoc on the merchants of the area. I've no choice but to go after them and hang them."

"Not to mention that they insult your pride whenever they 'kidnap' me."

"My pride notwithstanding, there are other concerns, my darling. Word has gotten to the admiralty that Sparrow has made a complete fool of me; that he's been kidnapping you and letting you go in order to insult me further. Should it happen again, I doubt I'll be a commodore much longer. I've heard rumors that I may be recalled to England over this. You would choose their friendship over my career? Over our own future prospects and comfort? Should I be recalled, I would be in chains, so you would be left here alone, with none of the comforts of this home. Or would you prefer to accompany me back to England, lose your station and live in shame; your husband in the stockade? Is that what you are trying to do? I don't believe you've thought over what this friendship means in terms of what you stand to lose. And no, my darling, I'm not idly threatening you with this. I've heard the rumors myself, through my most loyal men; you are quite welcome to ask Captains Groves and Gillette or any of the soldiers under my command. They're all fearful of any new commodore eager to curry favor with the crown that England might send, as they know I've been far more fair-handed than most men in my position. Please give thought to the family you have left before gallivanting around with your piratical friends."

"I don't wish to harm you, James. If you'll allow me, I'll send word to Jack and Will not to visit anymore. Perhaps we can take a holiday and meet up with them sometime in a neutral location."

"Elizabeth, if I'm seen with them without them being in chains, I'll be joining them in the stockade. Send them word, but please, my darling, tell them that your friendship with them must remain long distance, as it were."

"Will, this letter from Lizabeff is very disturbing. She doesn't want to see us anymore. And despite her reasoning, I'll bet it's the Commodore's fault. He's a jealous cur."

"Jack! He's not jealous! He's married to Elizabeth. How could he be jealous?"

"Tha's easy, whelp. You're much better lookin' than he is, and as for myself, I'm better lookin' than the two of you combined."

"Oh be serious, Jack. He's not jealous. He's got his position to look out for. I can just imagine if the new governor found out that pirates abducted his wife every month. The Commodore might even be sent back to England in disgrace. I don't want that for Elizabeth. Will you write her and tell her that we'll stay away for her sake?"

"All right, whelp. We'll stay away...unless word reaches me that she's being mistreated. Then we sail in with guns blazin', savvy?"

"Of course, Jack! But I cannot imagine Commodore Norrington mistreating Elizabeth. He loves and respects her."

"And you know this, how?"

"Jack. At any time, with her being on the Pearl overnight every time we've visited, he could have condemned her as being dishonored by pirates. Never mind that it's not true, but it looks bad, and people on their level of society depend a great deal on appearances. He HAS to love her a great deal to put up with her visits the way he does."

"All right, all right. I'll write her. It'll go better on you anyway. Or have you forgotten Belinda?"

"Jack, she's a whore."

"Tha's just her profession, whelp. I've seen the way you look at each other when we visit. You should think of putting her up in her own cottage. She's comely, and not shrewish in the least."

"Like you did with Scarlet and Giselle? They still work."

Jack grinned. "They enjoy workin'. Neither has to, y' know. I bought them each a house, and provide everything they need...and much they don't. I visit as often as time allows-"

"-And get slapped because they know about each other and don't appreciate being 'second' to another woman."

"Neither one of them is second in my book!"

"I know, Jack. You love all women equally. I don't know how you do it."

Jack stood proud, grinning like a cat with a bowl of cream the size of a turkey before him. "What can I say, mate. I'm Captain Jack Sparrow."

Will shook his head slowly in disbelief. "One of these days, one of your doxies is going to shoot you dead."

"Nonsense! They all know a good thing when they receive the money for it. And they're not 'doxies', young William. They're LADIES. Never forget that and you can't do wrong by them. Now...as to Belinda..."

"She is a special lady, Jack. I've honestly thought of settling down with her."

"You'll do no such thing, whelp! You'll be dooming yourself, unhappy for the rest of your days! Just buy her a house, and keep her in jewels and expensive clothes. Or out of them, if tha's yer preference." Jack leered.

"JACK!"

Jack chuckled as he started writing the letter to Elizabeth.
