CHAPTER 4

Jack led Treasure out of the captain’s cabin and up the stairs to the deck. The ship was leaning and water was beginning to cover the deck. Treasure looked around the ship then let Jack help climb over the side to where Gibbs was standing. Gibbs took the lady’s hand and helped on board the Black Pearl. Jack swung across with a rope that was still tied to the ship.

“Release the ship,” Jack ordered, and then turned to Gibbs.

“We have us a guest on board. Pass the word to the crew, she is our guest and is to be treated as such and not to be touched.”

Gibbs looked at Treasure then back at Jack. “Aye Captain, but you know how I feel about having a woman on board. It’s dreadful bad luck.” Jack waved him off and turned to Treasure.

“Gibbs, I want you to meet Miss Treasure Alexander, our guest.”

Gibbs smiled politely at the girl and raised his eyebrow, “Treasure?”

Jack turned to Gibbs, “It’s a long story, I’ll tell you about it sometime.”

Treasure looked at Jack and couldn’t help but smile to herself.
“Come on luv,” Jack said to Treasure putting his arm around her waist. “I’ll show ye where ye will be staying.”

Captain Jack led Treasure across the deck. As they started down the steps that would lead to the captain’s cabin, Treasure pulled away from Jack and walked behind him. She didn’t want to get too close to the man that had just saved her life. If he hadn’t attacked the ship she was on in the first place, his saving her life would not have been necessary. She must not let herself forget that. As they walked down the corridor, Treasure couldn’t help but notice how strong the man in front of her appeared to be. He did save her life and so far no harm had come to her, just as he promised, and he did give orders that she was not to be touched by the other crewmembers.

‘Maybe,’ Treasure thought to herself, she would survive this ordeal.’ As they reached a door, Jack turned to her pushing the door fully open.

“Welcome to the Black Pearl, dear Treasure,” Jack said sweeping his arms wildly across the room.

Treasure walked inside looking around. Jack followed close behind. The room had the rustic smell of wood and salt from the sea with a hint of sweetness. Jack walked past her and went straight to the huge desk on the far side of the room. Opening a drawer, he took out a rather large bottle and held it up to his face.

“Aye, my love,” he said kissing the bottle.

“Would you care for a drink,” Jack asked offering the bottle to Treasure. Treasure shook her head. Drinking was not something she was accustomed to doing, and having a drink with this man was definitely not something she wanted to do.

Jack shrugged his shoulders and said, “suit yourself, but after everything you’ve just been through, it might help you relax and feel a little better.”

Jack tipped the bottle end up and took a long draw on the sweet rum. Treasure watched him and wondered, who was this strange man, and did she really want to know.

“This is where I will be sleeping,” Treasure asked clearing her head from the thoughts that were in there.

Jack waved his arm looking around and said, “Aye, this be me cabin, such that it is.”

“Your cabin,” Treasure asked her voice rising louder, “and if I’m staying here, where will you be staying?”

Jack looked at her and smiled, “I’ll be staying right here, luv. This is my room after all.”

Treasure was not about to share a room with this man. “And what makes you think for one minute that I would be willing to share a room with you?”

“Well, luv, Jack replied, “if you would rather sleep with the rest of the crew, I’m sure I could make that arrangement, but I can not guarantee your virtue would remain intact.”

Jack eyed the young lass up and down making sure she understood his meaning.

“A lovely lady such as yourself, would be quite a treat for my crew. I have given my orders for your safety, but a man can’t be expected to follow such an order when such a luscious treat in placed before him, savvy?”

Treasure eyed Jack and thought about what he said. She knew he was right, but she sure hated to admit it. “So, I would be safer, here with you,” she finally asked.

“Aye,” Jack replied. He walked past her toward the door, bottle in hand. “As safe as you choose to be,” he whispered in her ear as he walked past her. Treasure spun around and faced Jack now standing at the door.

“I have duties to attend to. It would be in your best interest for you to stay here. I will be back later and bring you something to eat. When I return we will have a talk and see what we will be doing with you,” Jack told her as he closed the door behind him.
