Chapter 4: Kerri's Turn

Chapter 4 : Kerri’s Turn

“Jareth and his damn sparkles…! Now I’m covered in glitter!” Kerri thought as she looked around at the outside of her task. “Man this place is creepy! I thought Sarah said it wasn’t that bad.” Kerri remarked aloud while looking around. Everything had an eerie appearance to it. The trees were foreboding and sinister and the temperature was cool if not chilly.

“Maybe this wasn’t such a good idea.” Kerri thought again as she let her fear take over. “What am I thinking? I can’t just sit here and be scared! I have to be strong for Sarah and Keaira, they’re all I have left and care about now.” She encouraged. “Ok now how do I get into the Labyrinth?” she questioned aloud looking at the high wall and noticing that there were no doors to allow her inside.

“How the hell am I supposed to get in to the Labyrinth if there’s no door’s Jareth? You Dumb ASS!” She screamed to the sky with her frustration taking over.

With a sigh, she started walking along the left of the Labyrinth, searching for a way in. She walked quickly through low branches that seemed to come alive. Her hair and clothes would seem to snag on the branches, as if they were trying to stall her and make her lose the game.

“I hate this place!” Kerri screamed after half an hour of walking and getting caught in the bush and trees. She sat down on a stone to catch her breath for a few minutes and think.

“Ok there aren’t any doors as far as I can see. So I need to find another way in.’ with that, she looked around and suddenly the thought came to her.

“The trees…! Of course! I can climb the trees to get over the wall. After rock climbing, a tree should be no problem. But there all too far away.” She observed. “Wait a minute, didn’t I pass a fallen one not too long ago.’ She thought. “How could I have been so stupid?” Kerri cried turning around and running back the way she came, looking for the fallen and slightly rotten tree she had come across earlier. After running for a good 10 minutes she came across the fallen tree once again, it reached all the way over the tall grimy wall.

”Ok well I better start climbing.” Kerri thought as she stepped up to the tree. “Oh shit! I can’t climb the tree, not in these boots!” Kerri exclaimed out of frustration. “I guess I’ve got to take them off.” She sighed in defeat, bent down and lifted her jeans up to her knee and began undoing the zipper of her boots. She then pulled her cream colored legs out of her boots. She wore little frog socks that had black and blue strips with a baby frog on the toes. She put her boots between her teeth and started to slowly ascend the tree, slipping on the moist bark every once and a while. She scraped her skin as she struggled to climb it.

After many attempts, she reached the top of the tree that hovered over the wall of the labyrinth. Removing her boots from her mouth, she dropped them to the ground in the labyrinth. Then, she held firm to the branch and swung down and let go. Kerri landed on the stone path of the labyrinth that was covered in sparkles. With a sigh of annoyance and irritation, she grabbed her boots and put them back on. After she was through doing up the zippers, she stood and looked around.

“Ok, now where the hell do I go?” She questioned looking around. “Well both ways look like they go on forever.” She thought looking in both directions.

“Jareth, when I’ve beaten your labyrinth, I’m going to pound the shit out of you. You hear me you stupid peacock!” She screamed. Her next thought was: “Ahhh. The things you’ll do for friends nowadays. Sarah had better be madly in love with Jareth when I get to that castle or I’ll beat her up too. I hope Keaira is having better progress than me.” With that last thought Kerri decided to start walking left down the long passage. After a short walk, she decided to start running down the long path ahead of her but got nowhere fast.

“How long have I been at this?” She wondered aloud then looked at her watch and screamed. “I’ve been at this for an hour and I haven’t gotten anywhere! No wonder he left, I’m useless.” She whispered the last part to herself, broken. “What am I saying? I have to break this labyrinth! I can bitch and whine about my miserable life later, right now my sisters need me!” She demanded of her self then thought long and hard about Sarah’s trip through the labyrinth. Suddenly Kerri’s eyes lit up. “That’s right; theirs passageways in the walls. Sweet!” Kerri exclaimed as she placed her hand against a wall and started to jog down the path, running her fingers along the brick wall until she made it to an opening to her right to go inside the labyrinth and to two heavy steel iron doors on the left leading out of the labyrinth.

“Jareth, I hate you!” she screeched then turned right down the other passage. Then she thought, “I don’t see what Sarah sees in you but there has to be something!” Hours later, after stumbling around the labyrinth, she rested against one of the near by walls to see a bush of eyes looking directly at her. They looked like an eerie green coral with eyes.

“What the hell are you staring at?” she demanded angry from the little progress she’d been making. Unfazed they continued to stare at her.

“Keep looking and I’ll poke every last one of your eyes out!” she yelled only to scream as the bottom of the small plant opened up to reveal sharp tiny teeth. Kerri fled down the old path, tears falling from her vivid green eyes. She tripped over a fallen log and landed heavily on her side and screeched out in pain.

“Ow! I hate this place.” Kerri whined.

“Why do you hate it?” A voice questioned from in front of her. Looking up Kerri found two shields one red and the other blue. Both were being held by old looking knights. Each shield was being held by two of these odd characters: one’s head came from the bottom while the other one came from the top.

“Hello.” Kerri said politely. “Would either of you know the way to the goblin castle at the center of the labyrinth?” Kerri questioned.

“Oh no, not this again.” The red knight complained. “One of us leads to the castle at the center of the labyrinth while the other leads to, dum dum dum dum, certain death. WOOOOOOOOOO…” The blue knight explained.

“Which one of you leads to certain death?”

“Sorry you can only ask one of us.” The red knocker stated.

“Wait a minute, I remember this! Sarah told us about it.” She smiled happily. “I choose the blue one.” She said confidently, and then walked into the passage after the knight swung aside. “I’m finally getting somewhere.” Kerri laughed only to have the ground under her feet go missing and fall down a hole.

“AHHH SHIT!” Kerri screamed as she fell only to have numerous hands grab her and stop her fall. “Hey watch where you’re grabbing!” Kerri shrieked indignantly and swatted a hand holding very close to her crotch.

“Would you rather we let go?” A bunch of hands formed a face and spoke. Then released her and let her fall a ways down before catching her again.

“No! You can hold me.” She stated scared of falling, trembling slightly.

“Which way do you want to go? Up or down?” The hands asked again.

“What’s up?” Kerri asked.

“It’s the shortcut to the bog of eternal stench.” The hands laughed.

“Well I already know what down is.” Kerri looked at her watch to find she had about two hours left to complete the Labyrinth. “Up please.” Kerri replied. And the hands slowly lifted her up to the top.

“Thank you!” Kerri called as she started to walk down a dimly lit tunnel which she could barely see in front of her. She walked for a few seconds, having a bad feeling and suddenly felt the floor disappear from under her feet as she slipped and slide down a long winding slide. She screeched all the way down the seemingly endless slide to the bottom.

“We did say it was a short cut into the bog of eternal stench right?” They screamed up to her as they laughed.
