CHAPTER 05

Jack's hand grasped the knob of the door to his quarter, but could not get his hand to turn. His back felt cold and wet and his heart burned with indecision. He craved to see the boy, whom he had not dare to visit for many days. He wanted to know if Will was doing alright...if things were back to normal...if everything was okay. Yet he knew, deep down, that things would never be the same, at least not in their lifetime.

He stared earnestly at the beautifully fused bronze knob. The captain could not move.

What if things weren't ok? How could he face Will and the damages done by his own hands -- his own savagery? The answer was simple. He could not.

He laughed bitterly and tiredly as he watched his own hand abandon the handle. He turned away just as each of hisk chk chocolate orbs expelled a single tear.

"Ye are worthless." He thought furiously and helplessly. Jack backed into the sturdy oak doors and slid down till he was crawled up tightly outside his quarter. He wrapped his arms around his knees and pulled them tight to his heaving chest. The stars sprinkled across the dark bluish sky, that had once gave Jack a certain liberating sensation now simply enhanced his desolation. Everybody was asleep, and he was alone. Just as he deserved to be.

The man took a breath shakily as he tried to hold his emotions at bay, but he could not anymore. The captain had been suppressing himself for far too long. He would cry in his heart so no one would dare think he was troubled. The tears would turn into ice at his command, and the ice would plummet into his bottomless glass of rum -- entwining so much that the painful reality didn't seem so real anymore.

But tonight's the end of facades and recycled emotions. Jack crawled into a ball and allowed his tears to flow freely into the night.
